Following the declaration of a "pause" in consolidation talks between Carlton and Wrenshall school districts, Cloquet superintendent Michael Cary said Carlton had reached out to Cloquet again to discuss a range of future possibilities. It isn't the first time Carlton and Cloquet have talked, but Cary said he wanted approval from the school board - which he got during Monday's board meeting - because Carlton has a superintendent he hasn't talked to about consolidation along with new board...
Thomson Township supervisors unveiled a new audiovisual system at their meeting Feb. 18 that is expected to improve accessibility to meetings. The board had been experiencing audio and video issues since it began online meetings last year. It was often difficult to hear everyone and to understand who was talking. The township was able to purchase new equipment through the federal CARES Act, which provides pandemic relief funding. Board members, most of whom have been meeting in person at the town hall outside of Esko, and virtually through a...
The National Association for Music Education tells us that music is crucial to a developing brain. It helps language skills, social skills, and is good for overall intelligence. Music also helps students perform better on the SAT. So why, then, is it the least-funded subject in our school? Take the school play, for example. The costume and prop budget is only $700 a year while the football budget stays at $4,800 a year. We have one art and one music teacher for our entire K-12 student body....

Mike graduated from Proctor High School and was united in marriage to Pamela Maki in Cloquet on Oct. 22, 1977. He worked as an electrician for Midwest Energy Resources in Superior. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, snowmobiling, family gatherings, grilling and spending time with his grandkids. Mike was preceded in death by his parents; one...

With our farm's first growing season fast approaching, a century-old picture on the living room wall inspires us. The image is cloudy and faded at the edges. The faces of the people are blurry. We don't know a lot about the photo except that it's from about 1915 and that two of the people are Ed and Abigail Simpson, who first homesteaded the farm in 1906. The image shows a family and all of their livestock: A team of tall, white horses; five cows and a flock of chickens pecking away in the...
The Minnesota School Boards Association deemed the past week as Minnesota School Board Recognition Week to build awareness and understanding of the vital function elected school board members play in our society. Cloquet joined other school districts from across the state to celebrate and honor board members for their commitment to students. “Strong schools help build strong communities — and school board members devote countless hours to making sure our schools are helping every child lea...

As the vaccination process for Covid-19 ramps up in Minnesota, getting a vaccine has almost become a sport for some - as they bounce between various drugstore chain websites, local health care clinics and hospitals and a state waiting list that closes and opens as supplies ebb and flow. If you're registered on three different lists and end up getting vaccinated earlier somewhere else, that's OK, says Community Memorial Hospital CEO Rick Breuer. Just make sure you share that information with CMH...
I've spent my whole life growing up in the countryside and getting the chance to try many outdoor activities. I understand that most people have never gotten the chance to experience the outdoors like I have and the thought of that crushes me because that often leaves people to take advantage of nature like littering and treating beautiful places like campgrounds like dumps. When I say campgrounds I mean the ones near Holyoke, Moose Lake, and Barnum that are filled with lush wildlife. I've...
In English, we have the term bookworm to describe someone who is always reading. According to historian Nick Kapur, most every other language has a similar phrase. In Spanish and French there is book rat, in Finnish there is chapter maggot, and in Norwegian there is reading horse. All describe animals consuming and devouring books, something that some of us can relate to, especially given the relentless subzero temperatures and increased time in isolation. Wrenshall library media assistant...
It might be that early February provided the biggest punch of cold winter we'll receive this season. So the remnants of this winter will be a breeze when it comes to enjoyment without the arctic air. There are myriad ways to alleviate cabin fever in the area while still taking pandemic precautions. Here is a sampling: WALK There are many trails available in Carlton County for folks who'd like to get outside and tromp around in the snow, including trails at Jay Cooke State Park, along the St....

The on-again, off-again talks between the Carlton and Wrenshall school districts regarding consolidation are officially off again. Superintendents and school board members agreed last week that it was time for a “pause” in current negotiations regarding a merger that has been kicked around for more than a half-century. The pause marks an end to a flurry of consolidation maneuvers in the past two years that saw the school boards agreeing on a two-site plan that would utilize the South Ter...
Carlton County Covid-19 case numbers increased by 37 cases over the past week, and there have been no new deaths in at least two weeks. As of Feb. 10, Carlton County had seen a cumulative total of 2,946 Covid-19 cases with 43 deaths, according to the most recent numbers from the Minnesota Department of Health. Also Wednesday, the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa reported a total of 196 positive tests so far — unchanged in two weeks — with 92 of those on the reservation, also the same as the previous two weeks. The state’s Feb. 4 rep...
Wrenshall High School students wrote editorials in Ted Conover’s English composition class and some shared their opinions with the Pine Knot News. We will be publishing their work over the next few weeks. Over the years, I’ve noticed some limitations when it comes to the academics at both Wrenshall and Carlton high schools. I believe that if the schools were to combine, the students would gain new academic opportunities that would greatly benefit them in the future. With a very limited student b...

Like many Americans this past Sunday, I celebrated the largest sporting event of the year by eating my fair share of avocado. I realized it might be a fun science project for my kids and me to watch the pits sprout in water. After just one day, the skins had already cracked. I have them sitting on my windowsill and we check to see the progress every morning. The word of the day in my mother's kindergarten class on Tuesday was "seed" so there have been a couple new additions to the windowsill: A...

Most high school students have been “distance learning” since last March. Last school year we were sent home from school for the rest of the academic year due to rising Covid-19 cases. That being said, we only had about two months left of the semester. It was easy for teachers to post their end-of-the-year assignments and for the students to move on with our summers. No one knew we wouldn’t be back on campus for the fall semester. Most teachers and students were unprepared to go back to distance learning, as everyone assumed we would be back...

Covid-19 forced Cloquet's Billie Thompson into the Beargrease 40 race this year. The neuro-trauma nurse had planned to return to racing the mid-distance Beargrease 120, but she got Covid in December and is still not fully recovered. "That put me out of training for a couple of weeks obviously still dealing with the side effects," Thompson said, mentioning ongoing shortness of breath. "I just didn't feel like I would have been able to safely take my team 120 miles this year so we came down to...
For me and my neighbors, it feels far too early to think of the promise of spring. But I have appreciated the return of evening light as I walk to the mailbox at 5 p.m. While most phenological changes are happening "in the belly" of the earth, local farmers are on the verge of starting seeds for the coming season and many of our area's food share farms are now open for member sign-ups. The Dalens at Northern Harvest Farms (northernharvestfarm.com) and Catherine Conover from Stone's Throw Farm...
Here is a look at the 33 awards the Pine Knot News received last week from the Minnesota Newspaper Association. The annual contest run by MNA pits papers of comparable size against each other. Awards honoring overall work by a newspaper come from a look at issues chosen at random under contest rules. Entries by individuals are chosen by newspaper staff from a year’s worth of work. There are about 285 newspapers in the state that are part of the association. About 260 of those papers are w...
