  • I'm from Wrenshall and more

    Anne Dugan|Jan 29, 2021

As gradeschoolers in Wrenshall made their way back to the classroom this week, the learning theme that my mom came up with is “My Neighborhood.” Our kids created a map of their little slice of the county and searched for tracks from critter neighbors in the snow. Our map had the Brickyard restaurant on it and we were thrilled to see it open again after the state eased some pandemic safety measures. We eagerly ordered takeout there the last two Fridays and, after cooking all our family’s meals...

    Elle Swanson|Jan 22, 2021

Almost every aspect of life has been upended by the global pandemic we continue to find ourselves in. Organizations have learned to find creative solutions to new challenges, including Business Professionals of America, a competitive organization that allows middle- through post-secondary students to compete in business, marketing, and technology events at regional, state, and national levels. Wrenshall High School has had a BPA team for the past several years. Started by Kelly Bonitz, now at...

  • Schools chart return course to classrooms

    Jana Peterson|Jan 15, 2021

Expect to see children in a school near you very soon. School districts across Carlton County will have students back to in-person or hybrid learning as soon as next week, thanks to a change in state guidelines for Covid-19 precautions. While the previous guidelines required districts to rely on county-level data on the level of virus transmission in their communities, the latest plan allows schools to bring students back as soon as Jan. 18, provided they meet certain requirements. Those...

  • Restaurants, bars hit reset ... again

    Jana Peterson|Jan 15, 2021

Loyalty means a lot in the hospitality industry, especially during a pandemic. So does the ability to adapt. At area restaurants that has meant surviving without indoor dining for months at a time, in part by creating other ways to serve customers. Magnolia Café built a new walk-up window in the front. Pedro's invested in a new online ordering system, after using Facebook messenger to take online orders in the early days. And Ryan Lindstrom and Zach Zezulka of Carmen's Bar and Restaurant...

  • History Mystery

    Pine Knot News|Jan 15, 2021

With the help of Wrenshall writer Annie Dugan and relatives, we have a host of information and photos on the subject of last week's History Mystery, Tim and Nellie Pappelis and their restaurant on Minnesota Highway 23 east of town, Evergreen Hites. David Bellert owns part of the former restaurant site and wanted to know more about the history there. Joan Koski Johnson, a Pappelis granddaughter, told Dugan that Evergreen Hites was in operation from 1951 to 1963 and that her grandfather built it...

    Jana Peterson|Jan 15, 2021

The coronavirus pandemic continues its assault on our bodies and the economy. On the bright side economically, restaurants and bars reopened Monday, Jan. 11, at 50 percent capacity with a mandatory closure time of 10 p.m. as cases of Covid-19 ebb in Minnesota, but remain relatively high compared to early 2020. To make it easier for folks who’d like someone else to cook tonight — and to support local business owners — the Pine Knot News offers this guide to Carlton County restaurants and bars....

  • Wrenshall News: Just reaching out can work

    Anne Dugan|Jan 15, 2021

When I was young I remember my mom telling me a story about a guy whose car had broken down on a country road with a flat tire. It was late at night and bitter cold. He had helped his wife with a blowout the week before so he was left on the side of the road with no jack and no sign of help. This was before cell phones so his only option was to start walking. He could see a light on in the distance so he pulled his coat tight and set out. As he trudged along he started to worry. Surely he would...

  • Girls Basketball Preview

    Pine Knot News|Jan 15, 2021

Cromwell-Wright Oh what could have been! Last year Cromwell-Wright was on the precipice of what could have been a state title. The Cardinals were loaded with talent and had two of the top players in the area. They advanced to the state tournament and were an odds-on favorite for the championship game. Then? The Covid pandemic hit and the Cards season ended without a chance to play in their semifinal game and move on to the championship. Gone are eight seniors, including two players who scored...

    Pine Knot News|Jan 15, 2021

Cromwell-Wright If Cromwell-Wright is going to contend for a section championship this year, they will have to overcome the loss of five seniors who graduated from last year's state-ranked 20-5 team. After going 10-0 in the conference, the Cards were shocked in the subsection quarterfinals by Hinckley-Finlayson, but that does not diminish just how truly good that team was. Led by Polar League MVP Micah Pocernich, the Cardinals will need to find a way to replace his 25.3 points per game, along...

  • History Mystery

    Pine Knot News|Jan 8, 2021

David Bellert has a question about his own back yard. He wants to know if anyone has information on the Evergreen Hites supper club that once sat on the southwest corner of Minnesota Highway 23 and Carlton County Road 18 east of Wrenshall. "Local lore has it that Tim and Nellie Pappelis were the proprietors and former owners of the property which we now occupy," David wrote. "A cement slab may be evidence of the former business although no plumbing or other visible clues remain. It was said to...

  • Vaccine drive-thru hums along

    Jana Peterson|Jan 8, 2021

A drive-thru vaccine clinic organized by Carlton County last Tuesday is getting national attention for creating a vehicle - pun intended - for getting Covid-19 vaccines into arms quickly while still abiding by social distancing precautions. Time.com featured photos of the clinic and interviews with Carlton County Health and Human Services staff here in a story Dec. 30, "How Drive-Through Covid-19 Vaccine Clinics Could Help Inoculate the U.S." Although the Dec. 29 clinic was the county's first...

  • 2020 Year in Review, part 1

    Mike Creger|Jan 1, 2021

A fly on the wall at the office of the Pine Knot News, during a meeting of the minds discussing year-in-review stories, may not have contained itself in screaming: "Covid. Done." But, being a fly with no means to discernibly communicate with humans, no one here at the office heard the plea. Not that we needed to. 2020. Covid. Pandemic. Restricted socializing. Masks. Illness. Death. Loss. Or, as we displayed in our largest headline of the year on March 20: Everything has changed. Yes, fly, 2020...

    Jana Peterson|Jan 1, 2021

That's down from a week-to-week high of 407 new cases from Nov. 18-25. Since then, the new case numbers have been dropping steadily, although they are still high compared to the surge this spring. As of Tuesday, Dec. 29, Carlton County had seen a cumulative total of 2,572 Covid-19 cases and 36 deaths, according to the...

  • Our View: Keep schools in mind in legislature

    Pine Knot News|Jan 1, 2021

The Minnesota Legislature convenes next week for its 2021 session, and we hope for a productive session with better results for Carlton County interests. Although there are some new members after last fall’s elections, most of the lawmakers are returning to continue the work that fits their agenda and serves their constituents. And with seven special sessions under their belt since the 2020 session ended, it’s likely that most of these legislators are familiar enough with each other to get some actual work done, quickly. We’d like to see measu...

  • History mystery

    Pine Knot News|Dec 25, 2020

Sally DeVriendt sent us a note regarding the naming of Alcohol Road in Wrenshall. Her story is similar to ones we heard from others. No one seems to know how the road was actually named but it’s certain there were booming bootlegging operations in and around Wrenshall during the prohibition years, which ran from 1919 to 1933. DeVriendt including a clipping from a local paper about arrests of the relatives she talks about in her comment. A check of reports from the daily paper in Duluth show a whole string of arrests, especially in the early y...

  • District financials stay the course, good and bad

    Mike Creger|Dec 25, 2020

The good news for the Carlton school district is that there were no surprises and things stayed pretty much the same as years before in the annual audit released Monday night. That’s also the bad news as the district continues to face rising costs associated with more students living within the district choosing to go to school somewhere else. The district is not getting “economies of scale,” reported Matt Mayer from BerganKDV, which performed the audit. He was reporting at the final regular meeting of the school board for the year. In 2016,...
