With the numbers of positive Covid-19 cases climbing rapidly, students in grades 7-12 started distance learning Tuesday and grades K-6 will make the switch next Monday, despite the fact that last week's numbers didn't meet the state benchmark for changing elementary school students to distance learning, a last resort. Superintendent Michael Cary told school board members he doesn't expect the schools to change back to hybrid or in-person learning anytime soon at Monday's meeting. "The numbers...
Cromwell-Wright 33 Isle 14 Ethan Shelton and Jaegar Goranson both scored a pair of touchdowns as the Cards rebounded from last week's loss to Ogilvie. Shelton led the Cards with 118 yards rushing and Goranson was right behind with 112 yards on the ground. Goranson also added a 6-for-12 passing game good for another 122 yards. Shelton caught three passes for 62 yards and Emmett Clark caught three passes for 60 yards. Clark scored the other touchdown for the Cards on a 20-yard touchdown strike...
"Scrappy" couldn't quite overcome "tall and athletic" on Monday, but the Wrenshall volleyball team competed hard against it in Monday's home match against South Ridge. The Panthers swept the Wrens 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-12). It's been a good season for the Panthers (now 7-1) said head coach Brad Olesiak, explaining that they graduated four seniors last year but welcomed members of an undefeated junior varsity squad into the varsity ranks this season. "I thought they would fit in perfectly with...
In 1914 Emily Dickenson wrote about the feelings that follow suffering. Whatever your political party, this year's election has been painful. This Sunday marks the new moon and it's a wonderful time to look up and enjoy the vast expanse of cosmos that connects us all. While this is a column about Wrenshall news, the stars that I look at in my backyard are the same ones that someone in Carlton or Esko enjoy. One of our family's favorite activities is to track the International Space Station as...
The holiday season is fast approaching, but look for changes this year because of the pandemic. For more than 50 years, the Carlton VFW Post 2962 and Auxiliary have been collecting donations to assist veterans, families of veterans who are deployed, and residents in nursing homes and veterans’ facilities. Due to the pandemic, the annual Christmas auction fundraiser will not be held this year. The Carlton VFW will still need help from the community and businesses. Monetary donations will go i...
While many polling places in Carlton County were busy Tuesday, Thomson Township voters took it to a whole new level, with many waiting in line for more than an hour in a line that morphed throughout the day. By 4:30 p.m., the line snaked from the side of the parking lot up to the top of the hill behind the building, then back down the side of the grassy field next to the building and around the parking lot before going inside. The fact that most people were trying to stay 6 feet apart was...
When the 14-day Covid-19 rate in Carton County came in at 20.54 Thursday, Oct. 29 - surpassing 20 cases per 10,000 residents - it meant school districts needed to consider moving all students to a hybrid learning model. But state officials also say that the county-level data is only a starting point: school districts should also consider the number of confirmed cases, quarantines, and close contacts in their school community, at each school building, and other data such as individuals with...
The following vote totals are for Carlton County only, with all 38 precincts reporting. These totals are preliminary because the county auditor’s office is accepting mailed ballots that were postmarked by Election Day until Nov. 10. Vote totals are never final until they are canvassed by the governmental body in charge of that jurisdiction. Statewide and districtwide vote totals are noted, depending on the race. U.S. President Joseph R. Biden (DFL) 10,094, 49.58% Donald J. Trump (R) 9,787, 48.07% of Minnesota: Biden 52.4%, Trump 45.2% U.S. S...
Deer hunting season starts tomorrow, but the signs have been there for weeks. Behind shoppers' masks at the Super One grocery store, I've noticed more patrons (men, I think) sprouting beard growth and buying a lot of meat. It has been a cold October. Already in northeastern Minnesota, there has been snow staying on the ground for a few weeks. Now a warmup is upon us for opening day. The annual deer harvest ritual -some call it a Minnesota state holiday or vacation - runs Nov. 7-22 for most...
For the past few years the Esko volleyball team has come up short against Carlton. After the graduation of a boatload of Bulldogs and only one Eskomo lost to graduation, this year it's the Eskomos who prevailed by downing Carlton 25-19, 25-13 and 25-18 Tuesday, Oct. 29. "We've had a good start to the season and when you lose only one senior you expect your year to go well," said Esko coach Desi DeLeon. "We hadn't beaten Carlton in a few years, so whenever you can beat them it is a nice...
The Carlton and Wrenshall school districts made a joint effort to obtain funding from the State of Minnesota but it didn’t make the cut in this year’s bonding bill. This funding — called enhanced debt equalization aid — would have covered approximately 46 percent of the proposed consolidation improvements between the two districts. Depending upon what consolidation scenario was sought, the total cost was estimated at around $38 million, so about half of that would have been paid by our local C...

Halloween is arguably one of the most creative holidays, and this year that spirit (pun intended) will have to go toward figuring out new ways to celebrate. Luckily, Wrenshallites are figuring out some safe alternatives. The city of Wrenshall is hosting scarecrow scenes in Hugh Line park over the weekend. Visitors can walk through the park and pose for selfies, then vote for their favorite creation. Votes are due to City Hall by Nov. 3, with a winner announced on Nov. 4. Wrenshall school is...
Kyle Siiter scored a pair of touchdowns and the Carlton-Wrenshall Raptors picked up their second win of the season with a 26-6 win over the McGregor Mercuries in a District 9 White Conference high school football game on Friday. Zeke Rousseau and Siiter both scored in the first quarter for the Raptors with Rousseau running two yards for a score and Siiter plowing in from five yards away as Carlton-Wrenshall jumped to a 13-0 lead after the Kristian Herman extra point kick on the first score by...
Cromwell-Wright and Wrenshall hooked up in girls volleyball action last Thursday with the Cardinals coming out on top 3-1. Cromwell won by scores of; 25-18, 12-25, 25-16, 25-22. The victory improved the Cards record to 3-1 on the season. "Our team is very young. I am very happy with how the team is playing together and staying positive with each other," said Cromwell coach Amy Granholm. "I feel that the players are very supportive of each other. We know that we are lucky to be playing now, so...
After five special sessions since the regular session ended in May, the Minnesota Legislature last week passed a $1.9 billion bonding bill. It was signed Wednesday by Gov. Tim Walz. The bonding will allow for public works projects across the state, including a $7.5 million grant to Twin Lakes Township to design and construct a water main from Carlton County along the Minnesota Highway 210 corridor to Interstate 35. The waterline will alleviate fears about wells contaminated with arsenic and also offer an expected economic boost to the business...
Wrenshall teacher Molly Kidd has been honored with the K-12 Art Educator of the Year award by Art Educators of Minnesota. The veteran teacher was nominated by Wrenshall's speech language pathologist, Theresa O'Gara, after O'Gara saw time and again how Kidd presented engaging, creative lessons and then let her students fly. Kidd said she is dedicated to the growth of her students as artists and critics of the world, and she has spent years crafting her lessons so they build upon each other year a...
Jason Rarick should be returned to the Minnesota State Senate, District 11, on Nov. 3. District 11 includes all of Carlton and Pine counties, the eastern half of Kanabec County and four precincts in southwestern St. Louis County. The senator served as a representative in the legislature from 2014 to 2019 in House District 11B and was elected to the senate in a special election to replace Tony Lourey in 2019. Senator Rarick is a lifelong resident of Pine County. He has been active in the community as a 30-year member of the Knights of Columbus,...
I was reading a book one day and came across a quote. It pointed the way the United States is heading with all the government giveaways and its trying to help everyone. “A democracy could only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves gifts from the public treasury.” That could include all the government programs that pass out free housing, food, fuel, health programs, Social Security and Medicare to those who don’t qualify and much more. The quote goes on: “From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candida...
Every Friday a group of us Trump supporters have been having a sign wave, rain or shine, on Highway 33 in Cloquet. Why? Because we believe in the Second Amendment, the police and law and order, the military and veterans, the flag (we kneel for the cross and stand for the flag), the right to speak our opinions, secure borders, the right to praise God without fear, every unborn boy or girl the right to live and grow up in the greatest country on Earth, the pledge of allegiance with “under God” in it, good and against evil, future of our cou...
Friday, Oct. 16 Football South Ridge 44 Northeast Range 0 Connor Bushbaum had a huge night for the Panthers by rushing for 219 yards on 18 carries and he also added three rushing touchdowns in leading South Ridge to the win in the District 9 Blue Division game. Bushbaum also returned an interception for a score in the third quarter when the Panthers exploded for 24 points. "Connor had another big game," said Panthers coach Brent Johnson. "We have been performing well on both sides of the ball this year with it being only the second game of the...

As the Minnesota Legislature breathed its last gasps of air of the 2020 session, Carlton County can find some wins and some big losses when contemplating what became a session extended by five months with mostly unproductive special sessions since May and until this week. A school district consolidation will have to wait. A long-planned waterline project is a go, as is a grant for the county jail to explore increasing services for female offenders. On the flip side, the county will have to wait for permission to ask county voters to allow a...
Carlton County school superintendents were among 35 different school districts in the Northland to send a heartfelt message to residents Friday. Help us keep kids in school, they said. Wear your masks, wash your hands, observe social distancing guidelines, keep family and social gatherings outdoors, and stay home if you’re sick. Just four weeks into the school year, many schools across Aitkin, Carlton, Cass, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, Pine and St. Louis counties have had to move to more re...
