  • Cromwell-Wright season ends at State

    Dwight Cadwell|Nov 15, 2024

The Cromwell-Wright football team entered the state 9-player quarterfinals with a good feeling after a Section 5 championship win over defending state champion Nevis a week prior. Fertile-Beltrami dashed that groove Thursday night in Moorhead, handing the Cardinals a 48-7 defeat. The Falcons cruised with star running back Isaiah Wright, who rushed 10 times for an amazing 292 yards and four touchdowns, including the first play from scrimmage from 61 yards out. Wright would score on other runs of...

    Jennie K. Hanson|Nov 15, 2024

It’s been 34 years since Nov. 10, 1990, since our son Garrie was shot in the face during the opening of deer hunting season. He sustained a broken jaw, but was able to walk out of the woods and get to the waiting ambulance. He had to have surgery and ended up with three metal plates and eight screws in his jaw. They are still there, and will be for the rest of his life. We thank God for his survival. Enjoy the second week of deer camp, and stay safe. The Cromwell Area Community Club’s hun...

  • Cards deck reigning state champs

    Kerry Rodd|Nov 8, 2024

When Cromwell-Wright took the field on Halloween night it seemed like all odds were stacked against them. The Cardinals were facing an undefeated team, last year's state champions, and the top-ranked team in nine-player football this season. Nevis had beaten them by 40 points a little over a month before hte Section 5 title game on Halloween night in Brainerd. Add to the odds the fact that Cromwell-Wright's starting quarterback was dealing with an injury. All that, and none of it mattered as the...

  • New faces will join county board

    Brady Slater|Nov 8, 2024

Forty percent of the Carlton County board of commissioners turned over on Tuesday, with voters electing two newcomers to go along with the familiar face of an incumbent. "I appreciate the support from the district, it's been great," said 59-year-old Tom Proulx, the District 3 commissioner representing northeast Cloquet, from Scanlon to beyond Sunnyside. Proulx ran unopposed, and earned 97 percent of the general election vote (2,667 votes out of 2,725 cast), winning his seat for a fifth straight...

Bethlehem and Bethany Lutheran churches observed All Saints Day with a candle lighting ceremony on Sunday, Nov. 3. Remembered were Donald Hutar, Kim Peters Creager, Dagny Quarnstrom, Harriet Reno, Jon Swenson, Duane Schafer, Judy Rosicky and Joann Beck. May they rest in peace. Halloween is over, and I was surprised to get 37 trick-or-treaters at my new home in Cromwell. I was prepared for about 25, so had to improvise on the last few kids, but they all went away happy. Anyway, it was fun to see...

  • Plenty to celebrate at State run

    Jana Peterson|Nov 8, 2024

On a beautiful Saturday morning, hundreds of Minnesota's top high school cross country runners raced across the University of Minnesota Les Bolstad golf course as part of the Minnesota State High School Cross Country Meet. With the temperature in the 50s, it was the perfect day for running and spectators, said Carlton/Wrenshall coach Brenda Knudsen. But the rolling hills of the course created some challenges. "There were not a lot of PRs (personal records) with all those hills. It's not a fast f...

  • Just two remain in football playoffs

    Kerry Rodd|Nov 1, 2024

After two rounds of playoffs, just two local football teams remain in the hunt for that elusive state tournament berth. Both of those teams, Moose Lake/Willow River and Cromwell-Wright, are rich in postseason success and were scheduled to play for section championships Thursday night, after the Pine Knot News went to press. The stunner in the second round was top-seeded Barnum falling, 22-14, in Section 7AA, to No. 4 Mesabi East. The Giants jumped on the Bombers in the first half and held a...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|Nov 1, 2024

As some of you remember, I love watching the World Series, which I recorded on my DVR Friday night. Unfortunately, the DVR stopped recording at the end of the ninth inning, so I missed the walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 10th by Freddy Freeman. I’m hoping to see the replay when I watch the next game, and you can be sure I am recording all of the rest of the World Series games or watching them live from now on. Congratulations to Ari Dahl, as she placed ninth and qualified for the M...

Playoff football began Tuesday as a number of area teams tried to punch their ticket into the second round of sections. Class AAAA Cloquet made a valiant comeback against Duluth Denfeld in Duluth, falling short 28-20 on Tuesday. Denfeld came in as the No. 3 seed with a record of 5-3, while the Lumberjacks were the No. 6 seed with a record of 2-6. The two teams met in early October with the Hunters coming away with a 16-point win. Against Denfeld, the 'Jacks had the tall task of trying to slow...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

Things are looking up in Cromwell as the back alley has been blacktopped along with the municipal parking lot. Sure looks nice after decades of waiting for this project to come to fruition. The last Cromwell YOT Dance was held Thursday this week. Dances will resume in March. 4-H Club members from across northern Minnesota, including those in Carlton County, participated in the 89th annual Northeast Livestock Show in Little Falls in September. Among the participants was Justine Anderson of...

  • From the Editor: Out of many, one community paper

    Jana Peterson|Oct 18, 2024

When we started the Pine Knot News six years ago, people in the newspaper industry noticed. Admittedly, it was mostly shock — Who was crazy enough to start a brand-new paper? — mixed in with a flicker of hope. It all started after my previous employer, the Pine Journal, closed its office here and moved operations to Duluth. A group of us felt strongly that Cloquet and Carlton County needed a solidly local newspaper that actually cared enough to have an office here and a paper producing original...
