What another beautiful day in our area. The trees are turning color, and the sky has been blue. So much in nature to see and appreciate. I hope you can get out and about to enjoy this time of year. I hope you have noticed the beautiful huge American flag flying over the Self-Serve station in Cromwell. It is a great addition to the gas station and the community. As some of you already know, I have been subbing again this fall. My first day back was Sept. 6 in Floodwood, and I have several more...
Students, staff and supporters of Cromwell-Wright School gathered Friday to celebrate progress on nearly $7 million in improvements to the school. The summerlong construction projects marked the first substantive changes to the existing school building since it was constructed in 1995. Work included security updates throughout the building, a new, second competition-sized gymnasium, bathroom facelifts, improved commons areas, and rehabilitation and expansion of the parking lot. The parking lot...

The Cromwell/Wright football team picked up its second win of the season Friday by throttling Hill City/Northland 60-8. For the second straight week the nine-man team had strong individual and team performances. "I was very happy with how we performed on both sides of the ball, but especially offensively," said Cards head coach Jeff Gronner. "Our offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage and our backs were able to do a lot of damage on the edge." Cromwell/Wright led 20-0 after the first...
September is chock-full of activities and events. The folks that put on the Harvest Fest in Cromwell thank everyone who made the event so successful. There are many people to thank, but here's the main thing: the members of the Community Club and their friends made this event possible. More than $1,000 was made just on the pie sale, quilt raffle and the ice cream sales. The rest of the proceeds will be tabulated; expect a full report soon. It has been so great having students back in the...
Districtwide, Cloquet saw a 3 percent increase in Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments scores in the 2023-24 school year. Superintendent Michael Cary was happy to see the numbers mostly improving, four and a half years after the pandemic shut down Minnesota schools, but only three since students were faced with at least partial online classes. "As we move further past the pandemic, we appear to be seeing the impacts slowly diminish," Cary said. "The turnaround has been slower in our upper grade...
Rural schools in Carlton County showed marginal progress in the results of the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments released by the state Education Department last week. Students mostly eclipsed statewide averages at the Barnum and Cromwell-Wright districts, but, overall, the drop in scores since Covid-19 in 2020 was still evidenced with some lackluster performances in reading and math — the two subjects that are the primary focus of the tests. To better understand the proficiencies of rural-most students and the recovery arc since the p...

The Cromwell Park Pavilion grand opening on Aug. 23 was a big success. There were several talks, workshops, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conservation booths, lawn games and, best of all, food. We sincerely thank the City of Cromwell, city council members, and Mayor Zelazny for all their hard work on getting our park in such great shape. A $110,000 grant was secured for improved drainage as well as a DNR grant for outdoor recreation improvements, including a riverwalk along the...

It's great to have my internet back. I haven't been able to send this news column to the papers or my internet friends for the past three weeks. The last couple of weeks were busy and I hope you didn't miss any events due to not getting the news from me. Aug. 11 was a very special day for our family. My brother and sister-in-law Mark and Linda Dahlman celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright. We had relatives and friends from all over the country,...

Reed has been knocking on doors across the district, with a goal of reaching every door in every township. "The response,...
