  • Neglected West End getting some love

    Jana Peterson|Sep 17, 2021

It's not unusual to see visitors to Cloquet snapping photos of the world's only working Frank Lloyd Wright-designed gas station and its cantilevered roof at the corner of Minnesota Highway 33 and Cloquet Avenue. When they're done, they might head east and stop by the historical society or downtown Cloquet to eat or shop. More often than not, they simply hop into their cars and continue their journey north on Hwy. 33 or back to Interstate 35. Rarely do guests realize a significant part of the...

After opening the season with a thrilling come-from-behind, last-minute win, the Cromwell-Wright/Floodwood football team fell on tough times last Friday when it was dismantled 58-0 by Ogilvie. It was a tough night for a young team. "Overall numbers are pretty good, much better than the last couple years," said Cardinals coach Jeff Gronner. "We are a very young team and we are counting on many freshmen and sophomores to play this season." The Cards returned four seniors at the start of the...

  • Votes on school masks are mixed

    Pine Knot News staff|Sep 3, 2021

With Covid-19 infections ramping up but no state of emergency in Minnesota or nationally, decisions on how to keep kids safe at school this fall have been left up to local school boards. It hasn’t been easy. Masks have become controversial, with some residents asking boards to simply recommend rather than require them, while others say they won’t send their unvaccinated children to school if they aren’t required. It’s also a different time in the pandemic, because people can be vaccinated, which was not the case last fall. According to its mos...

    Jana Peterson|Aug 20, 2021

The old building at 219 St. Louis Avenue burned with a fury once firefighters finished their final practice sessions Saturday morning, torching one of the few remaining structures on Cloquet's Dunlap Island. From 8 a.m. to nearly noon, they lit fires and practiced putting them out in the many rooms of the apartment building, until the roof started to sag and it wasn't safe to be inside anymore. We have to give these kids and their adult leaders a lot of credit for earning their way to the ELCA national youth convention next summer in Minneapolis. They will need to earn about $18,000 for the group to attend and they are only partway to meeting this goal. The family of Mary Purcell had an informal celebration of life gathering for her Aug. 6 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright. There were five beautifully done...

  • Supervisors consider broadband reach

Residents of Thomson Township came to the board meeting July 15, suggesting that the board explore giving residents the option of underground cabling for their internet. The board then used the time to inform the public of new broadband options that...

Undoubtedly, the number of folks swells far beyond the population of roughly 127 (as of the 2010 census) during the annual Wrong Days in Wright celebration. Events kicked off Friday evening with a variety of small-town events to bring people together, from a pie social to kids' games and OGNIB (bingo spelled backward), concluding with a fireworks display at dusk. The annual steak fry was so popular that they were sold out of potatoes by 6 p.m., and the crowd stayed around to enjoy the Minnesota...
