I see the veterans memorial in the Wright park is being restored to its original condition. This has been a very sad sight for the past few months, but it is now going to be the tribute it should be. The Floodwood VFW Post 8299 will be at the Wright park for Memorial Day services on May 31, at 8 a.m. to honor our veterans. This year, Wes Heikkila will be the honored veteran, as he passed away June 25, 2020. His inurnment was at the Prairie Lake cemetery. Bring your American flags and wear red, w...
Reflecting earlier this month, Cromwell-Wright principal and superintendent Nathan Libbon recounted how he and his teachers, staff, parents and school board members managed to host most of their K-12 students in person for the past school year. Few other schools stayed open at similar levels. Due to a number of close Covid-19 contacts, the district sent students in grades 7-12 home for two weeks in November, but that was it for distance learning. During the rest of the year, a few families...
Cromwell-Wright families, we are able to have three more exchange students for next year. If you would like to learn more about the world, but are not wanting to travel yet, host an exchange student. Host families come in all shapes and sizes, and you just need to provide three meals a day and a place to sleep. Students are looking for American families to call their own. Call PAX coordinator Lori Wester at 218-343-8802. The last day of school at Cromwell-Wright is June 2, with graduation at 7 p...
What a difference a day makes. Students at Cloquet High School found out Friday afternoon that they would not have to wear masks during prom the following evening, AND they would be allowed to dance with anyone they wanted to instead of being limited to a pod of six people. And dance they did, starting out following dance song directions in rows and ending with a giant mosh pit in the school's back parking lot Saturday night. Senior prom marked Cloquet senior Casey Essler's second formal dance:...
It’s that time again when we need to meet to decide what events we are having at this year’s Wrong Days in Wright celebration. Here’s a summary of last Wednesday’s meeting minutes: Planning: Linda Kalli contacted several vendors to see if they are interested in attending Wrong Days. Linda sent a donation request to Fond du Lac for a stay at Black Bear. Linda asked Rick Gresczyk to follow up with them. Linda contacted George Burton regarding fireworks. They are available to do the show. We chos...

If fans wanted to watch an exciting softball game on Tuesday night, all they needed to do was pull up a chair at wind-blown Braun Park in Cloquet. That's where Cromwell-Wright and Wrenshall hooked up in a fabulous pitchers duel that lasted 10-innings before the Cardinals slipped out of town with a hard-fought 6-4 victory. "It was just a great game and a great night of softball," said Cards coach Kari Olesiak. "Both pitchers were fantastic and the game was what you hoped for." Wrenshall's Brooke...
It’s that time again when we need to meet to decide what events we are having at this year’s Wrong Days celebration. Our first meeting was last Tuesday at Kalli’s. We will definitely need some more help, as Jake has retired from doing the steak fry and we still have no one to take over kids’ games and the coronation on Friday night. Please spread the word. If anyone is interested in helping out with the event, please let Linda Kalli know if you can help: 218-878-7876 or linda.k...
T. S. Eliot begins his "The Burial of the Dead," the first section of his poem, "The Waste Land," with this: April is the cruellest month, breeding Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing Memory and desire, stirring Dull roots with spring rain. Winter kept us warm, covering Earth in forgetful snow, feeding A little life with dried tubers. I'll always remember these lines which I first read in college. And especially so this April, with its occasional warm teases followed by below-freezing...
At the latest quarterly Carlton County Health and Human Services meeting April 12, I learned about the Covid-19 response here in Carlton County. According to HHS director Dave Lee, 50 percent of residents have been vaccinated, and we need to get about 5,000 more residents vaccinated to reach 70 percent. So, if you have yet to get vaccinated, please call the Minnesota Department of Health Covid-19 Public Hotline at 833-431-2053 or check the vaccination website vaccineconnector.mn.gov for more...
The same day that a Minneapolis jury was hearing closing arguments in the case of a police officer accused of killing a Black man, nearly three dozen Carlton High School students walked out of school to stand in solidarity against racial injustice. The students and some teachers marched from the front of the high school to the teachers' parking lot, chanting "No justice, no peace, prosecute the police," as they walked, led by speaker Jaylah Willis. She also led protests in Duluth last summer...
Esko superintendent Aaron Fischer said people are "overwhelmingly glad" to be back in in-person classes at school, following an extended period of distance- and hybrid learning. Fischer shared a story about a possible snow day several weeks ago, when there was a forecast for inclement weather. "In past years the students would lobby me to close school anytime the forecast called for snow, but not this year," he said. "The students lobbied me to stay open." The return to school has come with...
Even as people flocked to downtown Minneapolis Tuesday to celebrate the guilty verdict in the case of former police officer Derek Chauvin, many of Minnesota’s elected leaders vowed the state’s fight for racial justice wouldn’t end with this case. “I would not call today’s verdict justice, however, because justice implies true restoration,” said Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison. “But it is accountability, which is the first step towards justice, and now the cause of justice is in your hands.” The verdict of guilty on all three counts of... Do you have godchildren? It was customary when my husband and I were born, mid-twentieth century, to acquire them. Having godchildren and keeping in touch can be so much fun, a form of extended family. My godmother was Aunt Dorothy (Dot), who lived just a mile away, a great stopover spot after school. We played gin rummy at the kitchen table while she fashioned some delicious supper or dessert. My godfather was also my grandfather, Joseph Roell, who lived with his two daughters in Minneapolis....
Help support the ADK teachers sorority’s takeout dinner fundraiser for area scholarships from 5 to 6 p.m. Friday, April 23 at the Rustic Diner in Barnum. Dinner includes barbecued pork, chicken, baked beans, coleslaw, applesauce and a roll for $13. Only 100 meals will be made and often sell out, so get there as close to 5 p.m. as you can. The scholarships are given to seniors at Barnum, Moose Lake, Cromwell-Wright and Willow River schools. I have had several requests for the YOT Senior Dances t...
It took a year, but local track teams got a chance to show their abilities last Thursday when many of the smaller county school teams participated in an early season meet hosted by the Eskomos. "We had six teams total: ourselves, Carlton, Moose Lake-Willow Ridge, South Ridge, Wrenshall and Cromwell," said Esko girls coach Matt Peterson. "It felt great to be back competing in a track meet after losing our 2019 season due to Covid. You can see it every day in practice, our kids are enjoying not...
Participants from Carlton County are included in a warning about an outbreak of Covid-19 cases associated with a Minnesota youth wrestling tournament held in South Dakota in late March and early April. The Minnesota Department of Health and Minnesota Department of Education have alerted schools around the state to watch for potential cases and to double down on masking, social distancing and other prevention measures. Health officials are also asking anyone who attended the tournament to get tested immediately for Covid-19 and to watch for...
Spring has arrived, and how do I know? Well, I heard the frogs croaking April 6 in our pond in the yard. But I still haven’t seen a robin. I’ll keep watching for them. Did you know that you can have fresh, warm meals delivered to your home on Tuesdays? Volunteer Services of Carlton County is pleased to provide this service, and all you have to do is call 218-879-9238 by 2 p.m. Thursdays to order (please leave a message because of the great volume of calls). The Streetcar Kitchen in Carlton pre...
The city of Cromwell is prepping for major roadwork on Minnesota Highway 210, scheduled to begin next year. Last week, Mayor Sharon Zelazny summarized a variety of projects coming up over the next couple of years. The 210 project, set to begin in the spring of 2022, will include crosswalks and sidewalks, better lighting and improved drainage. The project will be inconvenient but also a boon to the small town in western Carlton County, as the intersection of highways 210 and 73 is the beating...
There will be a special memorial remembrance for Siiri Peterson at Bethany in Cromwell April 11, at the 10:30 worship service. Coffee and cake will be served in the Fellowship Hall, and all are invited to pay tribute to Siiri. It won’t be long before the hummingbirds return to our area. If you do put out feeders, remember to not use red dye in the juice you make for them. According to Birds & Blooms magazine, the red dye is very harmful to hummingbirds. The Cromwell-Wright School office is c...
Community service was drilled into many of us growing up. This was necessary in rural communities of the past that had little money to spare. People gave time and energy to provide community centers, local celebrations, 4-H groups, local theater, food drives, cemetery care and more to enrich our rural lives. As a volunteer myself - township officer, reporter, western Carlton County promoter, and donor - without any fanfare to many good projects, I see this tradition continue. Read the local...
A goodly share of Cromwell-Wright High School students participate in vocal music every year. It's an art form requiring intensive individual work and attentiveness to instruction as well as the challenges of singing with others. Each learns about his/her own voice. Its range and clarity. How to memorize the pieces. How to breathe and sustain notes through slow passages. How to feel and convey the mood of each composition. How to modulate between powerful, often high, and passionate notes, and...
The Farmers Co-op board of directors welcomes Carol Hutar as its newest member. Carol is finishing the term of Birdie Harrington, who recently resigned from the board. The board meetings are at 6 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month in the store’s coffee room. Starting April 7, the Wright Senior Club is open again 1-4 p.m. Wednesdays. All area people are welcome to attend. Cribbage is 6-8 p.m. Thursdays, and you do not need to be a senior citizen to join in. Ruby’s Pantry will be handing out...
In the Section 7AA girls basketball playoffs the No. 1 seeded Eskomos, not surprisingly, are still standing and were set to play No. 4 seed Crosby-Ironton Wednesday as this issue of the Pine Knot News went to press. Esko beat Eveleth-Gilbert 61-31 in the quarterfinals on Saturday after getting a bye in the first round. Jayden Karppinen had a huge night for the Eskomos by scoring 30 points and nearly outscoring the Golden Bears herself. If the Eskomos won Wednesday, they were set to advance to th...
