Carlton County girls basketball rivals took to the hard court last Thursday as the host Cromwell-Wright downed Barnum 60-33. "We were able to rush out to a 17-0 lead, and then cruised from there," said Cardinals coach Jeff Gronner. "We did have our season-high in turnovers though, and that is something we need to clean up." The big two in scoring for the Cardinals were Sascha Korpela and Natalee Hakamaki. The junior duo scored 19 and 16 points, respectively, in leading Cromwell-Wright to the...

Cromwell mayor Sharon Zelazny asked me to pass along information about the Highway 210 project. The timeline for the project has changed. Testing in the area last fall revealed the need for some design changes. Instead of an early bid date, the project will be let in June since the secured project funding is for the 2021 fiscal year. Preliminary work is being done. The construction through town will start in the spring of 2022 with the goal of completing it in one season. Mayor Zelazny said...

Leo LeRoy Dahlberg, 86, of Cromwell passed away Feb. 13, 2021 in Villa Vista Care Center in Cromwell. He was born March 1, 1934 in Bigfork to Roy and Marie Dahlberg. Leo grew up in Effie and graduated from Bigfork High School in 1952. He married Marie Groth in 1956. Leo joined the Army and served until 1958. I recently found a painting my great uncle Dave Larson did of his wife back in the 1940s, but it has an opaque coating of some kind that has made the painting difficult to enjoy to its best. So, I was wondering if anyone knows of an art restorer in the area? This painting would be a much-improved family treasure if fully restored. It looks like he put a clear coating over it and as the years went on it became cloudy. Sure seems strange not having any football games on national TV this weekend....
Here is a look at the 33 awards the Pine Knot News received last week from the Minnesota Newspaper Association. The annual contest run by MNA pits papers of comparable size against each other. Awards honoring overall work by a newspaper come from a look at issues chosen at random under contest rules. Entries by individuals are chosen by newspaper staff from a year’s worth of work. There are about 285 newspapers in the state that are part of the association. About 260 of those papers are w...

Heather Wright, vice chair of the Carlton County fair board, has assured Carlton County commissioners that the fair board is committed to updating the 4-H building on the grounds and can make it available for the Minnesota Extension Office. “The 4-H building is already used for 4-H and Extension work in the summer,” Wright said during the board meeting Monday. “It is a large building and centered in the rural area of the county.” Wright said there are many buildings in the fairground complex that could be used more effectively for Extensi...

Our sympathy to the family of Ron Moen, 74, who died Jan. 17 after a six-year battle with cancer. He will be missed by partner LuAnn Freiermuth and his children and grandchildren. There will be no funeral service and his ashes will be interred at a later date with immediate family. I also heard that Cromwell High School graduate Lillian Koskinen passed away recently. The Barb and Tim Dahl family were finally able to meet for their annual Christmas gathering. Sounds like they had a great time. The Lawler Outlaw Vintage snowmobile run will take...
A difficult pandemic year did not spare the city of Cromwell. As mayor Sharon Zelazny said, “When it came to challenges and achievements, the challenges definitely won out.” Zelazny said the city council and staff made the Covid-19 pandemic the top priority. Every employee had to adopt their job description to include pandemic preparedness and adapt their responsibilities accordingly, she said. “Our municipal liquor store required everyone’s help to keep up with the necessary changes. I felt it...

I have received several thank-yous for keeping my readers informed during these past 11 months of the stay-at-home pandemic. It seems that every week when I sit down to type this column, I don’t have that much to share, but when I get to writing there’s always some news to share. Also, thank you to all my faithful readers and folks that share their news with me so this column can keep going. Remember, we are all in this together and need to work together to make a brighter future. I had the oppo...
Expect to see children in a school near you very soon. School districts across Carlton County will have students back to in-person or hybrid learning as soon as next week, thanks to a change in state guidelines for Covid-19 precautions. While the previous guidelines required districts to rely on county-level data on the level of virus transmission in their communities, the latest plan allows schools to bring students back as soon as Jan. 18, provided they meet certain requirements. Those...
The coronavirus pandemic continues its assault on our bodies and the economy. On the bright side economically, restaurants and bars reopened Monday, Jan. 11, at 50 percent capacity with a mandatory closure time of 10 p.m. as cases of Covid-19 ebb in Minnesota, but remain relatively high compared to early 2020. To make it easier for folks who’d like someone else to cook tonight — and to support local business owners — the Pine Knot News offers this guide to Carlton County restaurants and bars....
Sue Walli Shelerud has retired after 31 years of teaching nursing at Lake Superior College in Duluth. She graduated from the St. Luke’s School of Nursing in 1980. She worked on the surgical unit at Miller Dwan and later went to St. Luke’s Hospital in the intensive care and obstetrics units. For the past 31 years she has been teaching nursing at LSC, a rewarding career, she said. She truly loved working with the students at LSC. Her husband, Tom, is excited to have her join him in ret...
Cromwell-Wright Oh what could have been! Last year Cromwell-Wright was on the precipice of what could have been a state title. The Cardinals were loaded with talent and had two of the top players in the area. They advanced to the state tournament and were an odds-on favorite for the championship game. Then? The Covid pandemic hit and the Cards season ended without a chance to play in their semifinal game and move on to the championship. Gone are eight seniors, including two players who scored...
Cromwell-Wright If Cromwell-Wright is going to contend for a section championship this year, they will have to overcome the loss of five seniors who graduated from last year's state-ranked 20-5 team. After going 10-0 in the conference, the Cards were shocked in the subsection quarterfinals by Hinckley-Finlayson, but that does not diminish just how truly good that team was. Led by Polar League MVP Micah Pocernich, the Cardinals will need to find a way to replace his 25.3 points per game, along...
At the start, it was as if no one really knew how or whether to panic. So they cleared shelves of toilet paper and anything that could be used to kill germs on surfaces. As the state ordered places to shut down in order to quell the spread of Covid-19, it continued to only slowly seep in just how radically things might change in a pandemic world. Adam Bailey, owner of Cloquet bar The Jack, was like anyone else trying to navigate just what was happening. "Uneasy," he told the Pine Knot News in...
Roland “Bud” Olson, 91, of Wright passed away peacefully Jan. 4, 2021, in his home with his loving family by his side. Burial will be in the spring in Wright Public Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Atkins Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet....
Wasn't the frost on the trees beautiful on Saturday? I couldn't resist taking a few photos of the white evergreens and the brilliant blue sky. It surely was a winter wonderland. Congratulations to Charles Kabus, son of Liz and Tom, who was recently chosen as one of the Students of the Month at McGregor Elementary School. He was deemed a responsible fourth- grader who is hard working in everything he does and shows kindness to all. Doug Suhonen reports that the Suhonen family has had a tough...
A fly on the wall at the office of the Pine Knot News, during a meeting of the minds discussing year-in-review stories, may not have contained itself in screaming: "Covid. Done." But, being a fly with no means to discernibly communicate with humans, no one here at the office heard the plea. Not that we needed to. 2020. Covid. Pandemic. Restricted socializing. Masks. Illness. Death. Loss. Or, as we displayed in our largest headline of the year on March 20: Everything has changed. Yes, fly, 2020...
