    Kerry Rodd|Jun 14, 2024

Kerry Rodd [email protected] Carlton County was well-represented last weekend at the Class A Minnesota State High School League's boys and girls track and field state meet at St. Michael-Albertville High School. While there was no state champion from the area this season, a number of athletes made the finals and medaled for being in the top 10 places. Barnum's Annaka Bogenholm had the best state meet of all area athletes by finishing third in the discus in Class A and seventh in the shot...

Cloquet Area Fire District firefighters were called to a possible structure fire at approximately 2 p.m. May 29 on the 300 block of Second Street in Cloquet. Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke coming from the first level of a two-story home, but the homeowner wasn’t home. They quickly located the fire and e...

  • Filings for office close

    Brady Slater|Jun 7, 2024

The candidate filing period for political races subject to a primary election ended on Tuesday, yielding a ballot with more than a few surprises. In Cloquet, councilors Lara Wilkinson, Iris Keller, Kerry Kolodge and Lyz Jaakola will all run unopposed, barring a write-in campaign mounted against any of them, on the Nov. 5 ballot. In Carlton County, the commissioners’ races are a tale of three different outcomes. To replace outgoing Dick Brenner in District 1, representing west Cloquet, Scanlon and Sawyer, Sarah Plante Buhs and Caleb Dunlap will...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|Jun 7, 2024

I was able to attend the Floodwood’s graduation on May 31. This class has been very special to me, as I have subbed for them since kindergarten. When you are a substitute teacher, you follow them all the way through their school years, and many of them become special friends. I’d like to share the following poem with them and all our area seniors: To the Class of 2024: I’m glad I was your teacher, and I will miss you so. I can’t believe the end is here. I hate to let you go. Remember all the...

  • Legislative effects still uncertain locally

    Jana Peterson|May 31, 2024

Since the chaotic end to the 2024 legislative session on May 19, folks back at home have been trying to figure out exactly what it all means. Local ambulance services expect to see some of the short-term emergency aid for rural EMS, but exactly how much is still uncertain. Steve Risacher, who serves on the board for the Cromwell-Wright Area Fire District, said they’re pleased something passed, but they still don’t know what it involves for the ambulance service there. How to gain access to it, and what it’s going to be used for, is still pendi...

  • Our View: Care to roll up your sleeves and run?

    May 31, 2024

The window to run for public office closes at the end of the business day on Tuesday, when the two-week candidate filing season comes to a close. Running for local office is a big decision. A proper campaign to introduce or refamiliarize oneself with voters takes both time and fundraising for things like lawn signs. An election victory means modest or scant compensation in most cases, and comes with loads of responsibility. It requires the office holder to study and be informed on matters, and spend oodles of time in meetings and visiting with...

Our sympathies to the family of longtime Wright resident Edna Samuelson, 91, who passed away on May 18 in Duluth. A funeral was held for her on May 24. The volunteers at the Villa Vista/Cardinal Court were thanked at a breakfast on May 22. They were treated to egg bake, muffins, fruit, coffee and juice. There are many ways to volunteer at our care facility, just stop in and ask if you can be of help in any way or take the time to visit the residents. As most of you may have noticed, the...

  • Memorial Day ceremonies set for Monday, Sunday

    Pine Knot News|May 24, 2024

Observed on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day was originally set aside to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting and decorating cemetery graves or holding family gatherings. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season. Local honor guard members and other veterans groups treat Memorial Day — and their stops at various cemeteries — as a sacred duty. Cloquet Combined Honor Guard Captain Rich Chassé said...

Keller was appointed to fill the seat until the next election when former councilor Chris Swanson moved outside of Ward 3; this election will determine who represents Ward 3 for the remainder of that four-year term. Other Cloquet City Council positions up for...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|May 24, 2024

As of May 15, I have completed all my cancer treatments. The staff at the infusion center at St. Luke’s gave me an unexpected sendoff. They gave me a small lap quilt, a “St. Luke’s Survivor” hat pin, a certificate of completion, and sang “Happy Graduation to You.” Now my cancer journey is complete, barring any more health issues. This past year has gone by fast, but at the time I was getting chemo and radiation, it seemed like I would never be done. Again, my sincere thanks for all the prayers...

    Jana Peterson|May 17, 2024

Roundabouts are off the table, state officials told residents at a May 9 informational meeting on the proposed reconstruction of Minnesota Highway 33. The estimated $3.2 million project will include complete reconstruction of the four-lane highway from Big Lake Road to the north side of the St. Louis River Bridge. Replacement of the intersections at Carlton Avenue and Cloquet Avenue with enhanced signal lights was revealed Thursday as the recommended "preferred concept," said Angie Bolstad,...

  • District celebrates $7 million project

    Brady Slater|May 17, 2024

A chance to celebrate roughly $7 million in improvements to the Cromwell-Wright School brought out students and community members Monday.
