As the coronavirus marches across the United States and Minnesota, officials have been telling the public to leave the N95 masks to healthcare providers on the front lines of the pandemic. For the rest of us, a homemade cloth mask - whether sewn from a pattern or a T-shirt cut and tied to fit - is better than nothing in the fight to stop the spread of the virus. Cloth masks can help prevent both the wearer from spreading disease - remember, a person might not even know they have COVID-19 in some...

Carlton County officials reported a second lab-confirmed case of COVID-19 in a county resident. The person did have contact with a lab-confirmed case, and that is the presumed exposure, but the case is still under investigation by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). As a reminder, community transmission is widespread in Minnesota, so there are likely additional cases in our community that have not been lab-confirmed, and may go unidentified at this time (because of limitations of lab testing). “This stresses the importance of the Stay a...
The city of Cloquet closed all its outdoor play structures on Wednesday, including playgrounds, the skatepark and other athletic facilities as part of its ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic. City administrator Tim Peterson said the decision to close parks was not specifically due to one park, but rather the safety and well-being of residents throughout the entire community. “Avoiding groups of people congregating needs to be a priority for all of us and this closure reflects that,” Pet...

Days, hours, minutes and seconds. International, national, statewide, and home. In a whirlwind the past 10 days, life in Carlton County and the world has changed in response to a deadly respiratory disease pandemic. Schools are shut by order of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz - as are bars, restaurants and other public gathering spaces until at least the end of the month and likely much longer. We've been told to not gather in groups of more than 10 people. In short, stay at home, gather supplies when...
Watching the number of statewide COVID-19 cases climb from two to 77 in a 10-day period, northern Minnesota residents could take cold comfort in the fact that there were zero confirmed cases in the region earlier this week. "As of this moment, there's still not a confirmed case in our seven-county region, or in any counties that touch those seven counties," Community Memorial Hospital CEO Rick Breuer said Tuesday morning, adding that the hospital had tested only one person so far, with negative...
