About the size of a parched grain of wild rice, a microchip inserted under a pet's skin can make all the difference should that dog or cat decide it wants to roam. A simple scanner can read the microchip, which can be linked to the pet owner's contact information and even address. Cloquet patrol commander Dave O'Connor said he heard of a scenario in which a dog ran away, but was returned home within a half-hour, thanks to a scanned microchip. "You can get them back home pretty quickly," he...
Congratulations to David Finnila of Wright, on being inducted into the 2024 Minnesota State Auctioneers Association. The Reinhardt Auction Service employee attended auctions in his high school years, and he found that they needed help, and that’s where the seed was planted. You can read the full story in the most recent Reinhardt Auction bill. Our sympathies to the family of Stephanie Larson, 37, who died on April 14, 2024, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Her parents are Todd and DiAnn Larson of Cromwell. The Cromwell Area Community C...
A do-it-yourself expansion of part of Kangas Road will remain intact after the Thomson Township board of supervisors 4-1 vote last Thursday. Resident Al Bottila doubled the width of a portion of the road near his property by laying material in the east ditch. At the April 4 township meeting, when the board considered digging up the extension, supervisor Tony Compo and township attorney Dave Pritchett said they both inspected the site and said it looked fine. "You're putting the township at risk...
The minivan smashed into a wooden utility pole, sheering it completely at its base. The back of the van then rose up and the entire vehicle flipped, coming to rest upside down on the sidewalk. That's the scene Dan Hertle described as he and his wife were strolling into Gordy's Hi-Hat in Cloquet Monday afternoon just before 3 p.m. "We had just parked, and there was this loud bang," Hertle said. "Really loud." He said he looked to where the sound came from, just a block north on Minnesota Highway...
Our sympathies to the family of Judith (Anderson) Miller, who passed away peacefully on March 30, 2024, in Cromwell. She was 104 years old. Judy was well-known for her mastery of the organ and piano. Music was an important part of her life. She became the organist for First Lutheran Church in Meadowlands at age 14 in 1934, and continued playing for 74 years. A celebration of Judy’s life will be held at a later date at First Lutheran, where she was a lifetime member. Atkins Northland Funeral H...

Members of the Carlton VFW Post 2962 voted to donate $1,000 to the Salvation Army food shelf in Cloquet, knowing that the free food service helps community members and veterans. Salvation Army social services coordinator Sue Butkiewicz said donations are needed. "Our numbers are pretty much doubling," she said. "Hopefully that $1,000 will get you $10,000 worth of food," said VFW Commander Randy McCuskey, thanking the patrols at the Post canteen for their support of the veteran group's many...
I am back from a trip to San Jose, California to visit Curtis and Steven, and my sister’s niece and family. My sister Margaret, and her daughter Tamilee and her husband Craig, and I were there March 14-25. We were a bit concerned about flying back from the San Francisco airport, but all went on schedule. The ride back to Margaret’s went OK since there wasn’t much snow on the roads until we got to the Moose Lake area. From that point, because we know how to drive in Minnesota in the winte...
The Ma & Pa Kettle meeting is 6 p.m. Sunday, April 14 at the Kettle River Senior Center. Bring ideas on what you would like to see happen this year. If you would like to be a food vendor or have a space at Ma & Pa Kettle Days on Aug. 10, contact Dan Reed at 218-273-6103 for information. We are going to try to continue with the Finnish Luncheon. We don’t have someone to cater it, so we will be trying to make it happen. We’re hoping to hold it on the third Tuesday of the month starting in April. So, if we can get things organized, it would be...
Thank you to Jennie Hanson, Wright/Cromwell News columnist, for reminding us about the Little Red Schoolhouse on the Carlton County Fair grounds in Barnum. I remember visiting the schoolhouse as a kid with my siblings during the fair. It is hard to believe that all student grade levels attended school in such a small building. Volunteers are asking for donations to purchase books and school supplies to give to kids during the Carlton County Fair held in August. Donations can be sent to CCRE c/o...

This year's Mojakka Cook-off featured 15 varieties of soup and the largest crowd since the Carlton County Historical Society became beneficiary of the annual fundraiser at Cloquet's NorthEastern Hotel and Saloon. Attendees honored both St. Patrick's Day on Sunday, and St. Urho's Day, which was the day before. The made-in-America Finnish holiday celebrates the fictional St. Urho ridding Finland of a scourge of grasshoppers, and the NorthEastern was selling purple and green beer in honor of both h...

County Seat Theater Company opens this weekend with "Black Comedy," billed as a hilarious, crowd-pleasing slapstick comedy. The show features several colorful, duplicitous characters stumbling around a pitch-black room - all in full view of the audience, who watch the events unfold in full light. Set in London in the 1960s, lovesick and desperate sculptor Brindsley Miller (portrayed by Preston Johnson) has embellished his apartment with furniture and objects d'arte "borrowed" from the absent...
Happy St. Urho’s Day, March 16, to everyone of Finnish heritage. Happy St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, to everyone of Irish heritage. As the days get warmer and daylight lasts a little longer every day, many people begin to plan for summer activities. That also means the rummage and garage sale season is just around the corner. So, start cleaning out the attic, closets, basements and garages (I need to take my own advice, LOL) and donate to our local fundraisers held at the Four Seasons Com...
