The Humble Quilters Guild made four scrappy rainbow quilts for donation this fall, using fabric donated by the family of Barb Little. Barb was a charter member of the guild and was well-known for her quilt-making. Barb and her husband, Fred, were very active in the Cloquet area, a Humble Quilters news release said. Barb died in 2020, and Fred in 2022. Barb created many quilts for local charities. Some of her quilts were used for local fundraising projects such as the Cloquet Community Memorial...
The weather has been so nice that my son mowed the lawn today. The grass had gotten long, and it sure looks much better now. I don’t think we have ever mowed the lawn this late in November. A few days ago I couldn’t find my cell phone and I knew it was on silent, so even if I tried to call it from the landline, I knew I wouldn’t find it. So I called my son in California and asked him where it was. He has an app on his phone for finding where I am and was able to tell me the phone was in the k...

The Area Clothing Depot is 30 years old this month. It started in 1992 at the old creamery building in Cromwell. State Sen. Becky Lourey came and donated many items and helped with sorting. Pat Andarko of Bruno came, and a television news crew also came. The Depot moved to the upper level of the old Wright School in 1993. In the summer of 2007, the Depot moved to the lower levels of the old Wright School. It moved to its current location in Cromwell in 2009. The current (and longtime) manager...
And just like that, winter moved in.The weather might be turning a little frightful now, but we have plenty for you to do to get through the season, and maybe even enjoy it. Again this year, we are renting out ice skates, free of charge for whoever might need a pair. You can check them out for the weekend, or for the season. This is a good way to give skating a try, or to be able to provide the right size for your child without breaking the bank. If you have skates that you no longer use,...

How do you get 150 elementary children to hear and watch an opera? You treat them to a production by Little Opera of the North. It helps to have a scary tale with a happy ending, like "Hansel and Gretel." That was the fare on Oct. 9 at Wrenshall School. Music teacher Debbie Fenlason clapped her hands, the room became quiet, and baritone Rob Reardon stepped forward to greet the crowd and start the story: Two children get lost in the forest and encounter a witch who wants to turn them into...

There were two events the past couple of months in the Carlton Community. One was the Gigantic Garage Sale, sponsored by the Carlton VFW Auxiliary/Post 2962. Thirty-nine volunteers and groups from the Challenge Incarceration Program set up tables and for-sale items for the two-day sale at the Four Seasons Complex in Carlton. There were 102 deliveries of donated items by surrounding community members. The $12,480 raised is used by the auxiliary and post for their programs and improvements to the VFW. The other big event was the trick-or-treat...
The popular Trick-or-Treat event in downtown Carlton Saturday once again drew a big crowd, despite some downright chilly weather. There were plenty of creative costumes and entries into the scarecrow contest, along with the regular business of handing out candy. It was a good practice run for Halloween three days later, when snow joined the cold. Photos by Ivan Hohnstadt & Daisy Rose...
We can't recommend a pumpkin as a proper flotation device - too slippery, and a bit tricky to handle when wet, as some found out Saturday at the Cloquet Middle School pool as Cloquet Community Education hosted a "pumpkin plunge" to commemorate the fall season. A few dozen swimmers participated, taking home a gourd to carve in time for Halloween Tuesday, which is expected to be cold one, with a high of just 32 degrees that day....

Amber Repensky placed first...
It’s fitting that on Sunday morning the sun rose at nearly the same place in the sky and at nearly the same time as it did the day we started this farm season back on April 1. That’s the day Heather-Marie trudged across the snow and turned on the heater in the greenhouse to start the first round of seeds for this growing season. They would be planted in our field and eventually feed our 45 CSA members and our farmstand customers. And now they’ll feed us throughout the winter that’s about t...
As most of you know, I am dealing with Stage 1 triple-negative breast cancer. I’m done with chemotherapy, have gotten the mastectomy, and am now getting radiation treatments. I thought I would be finished with the treatments on Oct. 25, but my doctors said because of the type of cancer I have, I need 33 treatments instead of the 20 I thought I’d have. It’s kind of a disappointment, but I will do what the doctors tell me to do. The Carlton County Historical Society announced that the 2024 barn...

Meghann Levitt, an educator for Carlton County Health and...
Homecoming went a little differently at Cloquet High School this year, with no "home" football field. The coronation was celebrated during the high school pepfest Friday afternoon rather than halftime of the football game that evening in Proctor, the football team's home away from home while the Cloquet outdoor athletic complex is under construction. Saige Moran and Madysen Waters were crowned 2023 Cloquet Homecoming king and queen after a couple hours of pep session fun, including tricycle and...
