It includes gentle movement practice, relaxation techniques, and breathing practices, and it is believed to reduce pain, increase energy, restore balance, and improve your attitude and quality of life. The program is led by Carolyn Ripp, who has taught a variety of fitness classes in addition to being a registered nurse since 1984. She...

On Oct. 12, 1918 — 105 years ago — tragedy struck parts of Minnesota that included the communities of Kettle River, Moose Lake and Cloquet, areas of Duluth, and many smaller towns in the area. This was a devastating event for many families and businesses. I did not realize how close my family history was to the fire in Kettle River. My mother’s mother, Lucina Winquist, was living in Kettle River with her husband, Charles Winquist, and four children. They managed to escape to Moose Lake and survi...

Forgive yourself if you haven't heard of Julius Berg Baumann. The Norwegian-American poet, who lived in Carlton County, died of cancer in 1923, at age 53. And unless you find translations of his work, you'll need to know Norwegian to properly appreciate it. But he is a celebrated artist, with a large monument honoring him at Hillcrest Cemetery in Cloquet. That's where people will meet Saturday after a celebration of Baumann at the Carlton County Historical Society beginning at 11 a.m. Baumann...

Our sympathies to the family of 22-year-old Brock Hascall of Wright, who died when his car was hit by a train on Sept. 9. Here is what his family shared on Facebook: “To say we are all devastated is an understatement, however, we now know exactly how many people he touched in his short time here on earth. The outpouring of mes...

Both sides of Avenue C were lined with an eclectic mixture of artists, vendors, businesses and community organizations selling, providing information and engaging with the attendees. The inflatable bounce house, slide and barrel train rides were a hit with the younger set. Musicians, including Cloquet native John Saaristo, performing as Yellow Cloud Rising, provided music...

Don’t miss the low-cost pet microchip and vaccine clinic for Cloquet and Carlton County residents from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23 near the picnic shelter at Veterans Park in Cloquet. Previous clinics have included free microchips for up to three pets, and $15 vaccinations for rabies, distemper/parvo and bordetella. Nail trims are $10. With no animal shelter in Carlton County, local authorities share in the cost of the clinic because pets that are microchipped are far more likely to be reunited with their owners quickly than those w...

The Harvest Fest last weekend in Cromwell seemed to be a huge success. Thanks to all the volunteers and attendees. And they had the most unusual parade this year. There was only one unit this year. But it sure was special, as the grand marshal, Jon Swenson Sr., accompanied by his family, was on an old-fashioned wagon with sides, and it was pulled by an old Ford tractor. Jon sure deserved this honor! The United Methodist Church in Cromwell is having a special event at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16: Church and Chili will include a bonfire fire...
The latest exhibit at The Knot gallery - located within the Pine Knot News office - focuses on the art of the newspaper, in particular, the photography and page design that make the paper something pleasing to the eye, as well as informative. "Newspapers tell the stories of our times with both prose and imagery, which tend to make each other stronger," said editor Jana Peterson. "But the art of newspaper lies not only in the obvious photographs and graphics, but also in the way those elements...
Both Wrenshall Brickyard Days and the Cromwell Harvest Festival return this weekend, bringing a shot of community togetherness. In Wrenshall that togetherness comes with a game of cow patty bingo. Wrenshall cheer coach and Brickyard Days organizer Jolene Johnson explained the process behind the unusual game of chance, which involves a student walking a cow over a giant grid with 200 squares. “One of our students will halter-walk a cow around all the squares, whatever square the cow does its b...
The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa announced last week some guidelines for members harvesting wild rice. “(R)espect the gift we have been given,” the Band’s Wild Rice Committee said in a news release Aug. 31. “Please avoid areas of green rice, knock with respect, and to think of those who come after you as those who came before you did.” The wild rice harvest began on Saturday. Other harvesting notes include: • Ricing will be allowed every day. • For the first week harvest hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; for the second week harvest goes...

The festival is free to attend, and will feature balloon demonstrations, local food trucks, live music, chainsaw carving, tethered balloon rides and a special...
For more than a century, Cloquet has celebrated Labor Day with parades, picnics and other forms of revelry. That continued Monday, despite a severe lack of volunteers to run the event. Still, organizer Chad Tuura was happy. "For a nonpolitical year, it turned out pretty well," he said. Both U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar and U.S. Rep. Pete Stauber made the trip to the Cloquet for the parade, along with State Senator Jason Rarick and State Representative Jeff Dotseth. Grand marshal Pete Radosevich...
For the first 50 years or so of Cloquet’s existence, the West End of Cloquet was the beating heart of the city, particularly in terms of government. Spanning avenues B, C and D from Broadway Avenue to the other side of Arch Street, it was packed. City Hall and the jail were here, the Pine Knot newspaper and lots of different stores were all located in the West End, including banking and commerce, Odd Fellows and the Masonic Temple and the train depot. Traffic flowed from Dunlap Island up Arch S...
