Brady Slater [email protected] A new entertainment venue above Cloquet’s popular Mexican restaurant unveiled itself Sunday with — what else? — a private event. Pedro’s Grill and Cantina Event Center buzzed with owner Erika Aranda’s family, friends and invited guests. “It’s absolutely beautiful,” said Melanie Koski, a Cloquet resident and bookkeeper for the nonprofit REACH. “It’s more than I expected,” said Doug Wolf, CEO of Northwoods Credit Union. “It’s a beautiful space and very...
I’m sure that as you are reading this, you are thankful for the completion of the two box culverts between Cromwell and Wright. I had to take the detours only occasionally, but now that I don’t have to, I sure am thankful for the direct route to Cromwell from my home in Wright. I’m sure there were many folks who had to take the detours almost every day on their way to work or other appointments. I’m proud to announce that Cromwell mayor Sharon Zelazny received the 2023 Carlton County Outstanding Senior award at the Carlton County fair on Aug....
Welcome back to all the students attending Carlton schools on Tuesday, Sept. 5. We are excited for our kids, and remember how we felt on that first day of grade school or junior high way back when. I wish all of the students a wonderful and successful year. The Carlton community has a long academic history. The citizens of the Village of Carlton petitioned for a school on Sept. 18, 1871, which became District No. 2. A small wooden structure was built, and one teacher, Miss Flora Lafan, was...

Do you recall the great meat price crisis of 1973? Often referred to as a shortage, it really was about prices spiking when artificial price controls went wonky on foods during a nationwide inflationary period. Quibble all you want about the exact reasons meat prices went sky high. We did see one item of local interest in a statewide paper from August of 1973, 50 years ago. There apparently was a spate of cattle rustling in Carlton County and the region. People were taking cattle right off pastu...
On Saturday, Veterans Park echoed with music and filled with people of all ages, as the Wood City Worship Festival returned for its 10th time. Despite some evening rain, turnout was quite good. "It went above and beyond what we dreamed," said Joe Nelson, a board member of Kingdom Builders Ministries, which organizes the annual event. As part of that outreach, he was enthusiastic about the 31 baptisms performed during the festival. "Some people who won't go to church will go to a music...
Ma & Pa Kettle Days showcased downtown Kettle River Saturday. Both sides of Highway 73 were bustling, as residents and area businesses turned out for a three-hour stationary parade along the main drag. A lively cornhole tournament attracted at least two dozen people to the lot next to the Tower Tap bar, while others chose to wander the main drag, where they could find food, friends and meet a variety of folks. That included farmers, four-wheeler enthusiasts, folks for and against the Talon mine...

It’s been a couple of weeks since I have been able to get some news into my columns. It’s not because I didn’t want to but because I just couldn’t. I was in the hospital for 12 days in July and have been taking antibiotic treatments every day since for an infection in my colon. Hopefully that is cleared up and I can now proceed with the cancer surgery. It’s been a long-haul, but I’m looking forward to a full recovery in the near future. There was an annual Wright Co-op store meeting Aug. 2. As far as any other news in the area, I have been o...

In between, there was a candy-filled parade and then a gathering in Northridge park for food and children's activities. The dunk tank was extremely popular, with plenty of volunteers to both throw the ball and to get dunked in the cool water....
Across Carlton County and the nation, Tuesday night saw residents, law enforcement, firefighters and others getting to know one another just a little bit better. While the idea that meeting your neighbors and public safety officials will help build a safer community remains at the core of National Night Out celebrations everywhere, each gathering is unique. In Scanlon Tuesday, local elected officials were out in force, along with a number of police officers and firefighters. Several - including...
Cloquet Area Chamber of Commerce members gather in the wood yard after taking a two-hour tour of the Sappi mill last week. Sappi employees take the visitors through almost every stage of the process, from debarking logs to creating pulp to adding a shiny topcoat to the company's glossy paper product....
The Carlton Daze celebration was a wonderful event - even Mother Nature was on her best behavior. Thank you to the Carlton Area Chamber, local businesses and volunteers for making the celebration a success. The 29th annual 5K had great weather for the 130 walkers and runners participating in the race. I spent Saturday afternoon walking through the car show, visiting with friends and having lunch at one of the many food trucks. (This is a time when the diet goes out the window.) Sunday's parade...
It was a car show and cornhole on Saturday at the annual Carlton Daze celebration last weekend. Other Friday and Saturday events included sports tournaments, running races, a golf tournament and kid and adult fun downtown. The parade was on Sunday, followed by hot dogs and rootbeer at the firehall as well as chances to work a fire hose. As the Carlton-Wrenshall Raptors cheerleaders might proclaim: Three cheers for a wonderful weekend of good weather and good fun. Pine Knot News photos by Dave...
One of the side events to those in town at Carlton Daze is the Paddlemania on the rapids of the St. Louis River, from the Thomson dam to the swinging bridge in Jay Cooke State Park. The water was rough enough to create a few spills and a lot of thrills for those participating on Saturday. There were quiet moments as well, on what turned out to be a perfect weather day by the river....

Sunnyside Health Care Center staff, along with resident family members and volunteers wheeled 25 residents down the hill from the nursing home at Community Memorial Hospital to the coffee and ice cream shop. "It was a great hot day for ice cream. Many flavors of ice cream were enjoyed by residents and [wheelchair]...
National Night Out began nearly 40 years ago with the idea that the best way to build a safer community is to know your neighbors and your surroundings. A network of neighborhood watch groups and other crime prevention efforts along with law enforcement agencies threw block parties, cookouts, festivals and other events to bring people together with public safety officials, in their own neighborhoods or the larger community. It just keeps growing, reaching “millions of neighbors across t...

The Cloquet Public Library has been hosting the Barks & Books program every second Thursday of the month, 4-5:10 p.m., since January. When our children's librarian, Morgan Reardon, started working at the library last fall, she was eager to demonstrate her programming ideas. She heard of other libraries offering therapy dog programs with great success. Reading with therapy dogs has been proven to encourage positive relationships with reading. On Thursday, July 13, two therapy dogs, Tiara and...
