The West End of Cloquet was the first part of town rebuilt after the Fires of 1918 and has the most historic buildings, but it's also the area with the most vacant storefronts. It's a relatively small area: spanning avenues B, C and D from Broadway Avenue to the other side of Arch Street. For the first 50 years or so of Cloquet's existence, the West End was the beating heart of the city, particularly in terms of government. City Hall and the jail were here, the Pine Knot newspaper and lots of...

A walk through the West End of Cloquet most days is a quiet one. Anchored at one end by Common Ground Coffee Bar & Deli and the Lakeshore Tobacco Vapor store on the other, it’s the end of downtown that time forgot. It will be anything but quiet on Saturday, Sept. 24. Weather permitting, the West End Flourish street fair and car show will turn the historic part of town into a bustling, pedestrian-friendly festival. There will be art and artisans, live music all day, things to buy, d...
It would be difficult to determine who had the starring role - politicians or candy - in Monday's Labor Day parade, but there was a plethora of both. And the kids were open to either, plastering political stickers on T-shirts without questioning platforms and filling backpacks and plastic grocery bags with enough candy to keep the dentist busy through Halloween. Many local candidates made their public debut this election season, while numerous state politicians and even U.S. Senator Amy Klobucha...
School has started, so please take extra time for travel and stop for all school buses. We want to keep all the children safe while they travel to and from school. The Pine Knot Gallery offers “urbanscape” paintings and photos as its fall exhibit, with a public artist reception set for Sept. 16. Featured are unique perspectives from area artists, including everything from local townscapes to cityscapes in Minnesota and beyond. They include Cromwell artist Carole Hill’s painting of the Kettle River feed mill and Ivy Vainio’s photograph of Carl Gawboy painting an early large-scale Duluth/Superior landscape. Cloquet’s Rhonda “Ron” Peters loves to take photos. “Everything,” she says. “Industrial, comm...
With only a few days left until Labor Day, Central Labor Body president Chad Tuura is bouncing between excitement over what he’s predicting will be a large parade and worry, because this important local event basically rests on his shoulders. He was giddy Tuesday night, after learning that Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon had agreed to be grand marshal in Monday’s parade, and after hearing from the Democratic-Farmer-Labor party that Cloquet would likely see some “major polit...

The $3 tickets coincide with Premiere’s introduction of 369 new recliner seats, which are debuting this weekend. “It couldn’t be better timing for us,” general manager Adam Stowell said. “We’re excited. We expect it to be busy, and for people to enjoy experiencin...
It’s that time of year again: the Rat Rod Rendezvous is happening again in Mahtowa. There may have to be a re-turning of the phrase "kid in a candy store" when it comes to the childlike excitement Saturday in Esko. Kids at the Lakehead Harvest Festival last weekend had a wide variety of things to do and see, especially when it comes to the main attraction at the festival: tractors and engines and things that move in old-time fashion. And the adults in attendance Saturday looked like kids as they fine-tuned their engines, planed boards, munched on steamed corn and burgers, and...
I would like to thank all the volunteers who made the Ma & Pa Kettle Days happen again this year. Covid played a part in making us start over from scratch and we are really trying to keep this event going. I also want to thank all the people who attended. I heard many people liked the new way we did the standstill parade. We nearly ran out of pies at the pie social and many people enjoyed the old-fashioned-style bingo with great prizes. There will be a Ma & Pa Kettle Days meeting at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18 at the Kettle River Senior Center to...
If you are a parent, grandparent or great-grandparent, you know that school will be starting on Tuesday, Sept. 6. We are excited for our kids, and remember how we felt on that first day of grade school or junior high way back when. The Carlton community has a long history of having a school within the city. The citizens of the Village of Carlton petitioned for a school on Sept. 18, 1871, and became District No. 2. A small wooden structure was built and one teacher, Miss Flora Lafan, was hired....
Grandchildren are wonderful gifts, and if you live long enough you get great-grandkids and maybe even great-great-grandkids. That is what we think of our grandkids, and now three great-grandkids. They were here for a visit last week and we made some wonderful memories. The great-grandkids — ages 4, 2, and 1 — were able to camp out in our yard and then spend the whole day with us along with their parents, making pancakes, chocolate chip cookies and playing with all the interesting toys and games I have for them. By the end of that day, I was...
Teachers were the focus Tuesday, Aug. 29, at the Moose Lodge. The project to feed and outfit teachers with supplies was a $3,000 effort, said event coordinator Patti Haus (not pictured). Last year, the Moose donated backpacks to students, but since the United Way and others were doing that this year, "We decided, 'Let's help teachers!'" Patti said. The Moose enjoyed a banner summer, she added, with contributing projects from May to July worth $20,000....
Fairgoers who stood in lines 30 deep for food, rides and attractions might have wondered Saturday if attendance had reached an all-time peak in Barnum. Alas, the Carlton County Fair concluded its marquee day with roughly 9,100 paid visitors, off the pace from last year's record-setting 9,800. "It was a good week, but nothing compared to last year," fair manager Lindsey Larson said. "We had fabulous numbers Saturday, but it didn't beat last year with everyone coming out after Covid. It was still...
The Lakehead Harvest Show returns Friday for its 61st annual show with daily activities from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m Friday through Sunday, Aug. 26-28 at 70 E. St. Louis River Road near Esko. Bring the whole family and get ready for a trip into the past on this old-school working farm. There’s lots to see and do there. Volunteers demonstrate all kinds of farm activities using old-school equipment to thresh, plow, crush rocks, plane wood and even make shingles. Lakehead Harvest president Ryan Hansen s...
The smell of exhaust and the roar of car engines engulfed the fairgrounds in Barnum last weekend. The annual Carlton County Fair brought the return of the Oval races, the Demolition Derby and the Figure 8, as well as school bus races and more. Pine Knot News photographer Dave Harwig was there to catch them all. Enjoy his photos and find more at viewthroughmylens.net....
Cloquet will, once again, be the place to go to celebrate Labor Day. After a pandemic hiatus, the free Oldtimers Banquet will return on Sunday, Sept. 4 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Four Seasons Event Center in Carlton. The parade is the highlight on Labor Day, filled with neighbors, businesses, and politicians marching down Cloquet Avenue at 11 a.m., Monday, Sept. 5, followed by children’s activities and food trucks at Veterans Park until 4 p.m. The Northeastern Hotel, Saloon and Grille will host its annual Labor Day car show – they’re hopin...
