Car enthusiasts averse to shiny chrome and bright hot rod colors gathered in Mahtowa Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, for the annual Rat Rod Rendezvous. There were street rods and other classic cars on "Shine on Saturday" and then the rat rods rolled in for "Rusty Sunday."...
Once again, Cloquet will celebrate Labor Day with a parade. It's a tradition that's continued more than 105 years here, starting in 1917. The holiday was created in the late 19th century to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America's strength, prosperity, and well-being, according to the Labor Department. "It's a staple in our community," said Labor Day celebration president Chad Tuura. "Labor unions are still strong in this area. We're part of this community." Monday's...
The Cromwell Park Pavilion grand opening on Aug. 23 was a big success. There were several talks, workshops, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conservation booths, lawn games and, best of all, food. We sincerely thank the City of Cromwell, city council members, and Mayor Zelazny for all their hard work on getting our park in such great shape. A $110,000 grant was secured for improved drainage as well as a DNR grant for outdoor recreation improvements, including a riverwalk along the...
The beginning of school is right around the corner, so be sure to slow down when driving in school zones and around school buses. Soon fall will be upon us, and we will be getting the yards and flowerbeds ready for winter. I am anticipating putting out my annual Christmas decorations. It seems the older I get, the longer it takes to get it all set up. But I have decided to persevere and put everything out at least one more year. The Gigantic Garage Sale will be held next weekend, Sept. 6 and 7,...
Take a trip to our agricultural past this weekend at the Lakehead Harvest Show. Located just off the intersection of Canosia and St. Louis River roads, this old-school working farm puts on a show every August. There's lots to see and do from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday, Aug. 23-25. Volunteers demonstrate all kinds of farm activities using old-school equipment to thresh, plow, crush rocks, plane wood and even make shingles. There's also food, blacksmithing and sawmilling...
Cute animals are always on display at the Carlton County Fair, but this year's fair had a bumper crop of amazing critters thanks to the Animals *R* Us petting zoo (pictured) bringing its alpacas (with a 2-day-old baby), goats of all ages, camels, an emu and even a porcupine. With rain on Thursday, the barns and other covered spaces were even more inviting. The tractor pull was canceled that evening because the track was wet, but that was the last weather cancellation. Plenty of people turned...
Over 555 people attended Saturday's Mud Bog event during Ma & Pa Kettle Days, more than three times the population of the small Carlton County town. For those who aren’t familiar with mudding sports, there’s more than one type of mud bog, although they all involve vehicles driving into a giant mud pit. “This particular mud bog is more of a ‘bounty hole’ style. You’re not really supposed to make it through,” explained mud bog committee member Eric Senarighi. A mud bog is very different from a mud...
The annual Wood City Worship Festival brought music, food, faith and a ton of people to Veterans Park Saturday, plus a whole lot of fun. Even after the "foam party" was over, Maryah Christenson, 5, and Suri Keller, 6, had fun rolling through a foot of foam, ending their playtime covered in tiny soap bubbles. Meanwhile Josiah Gallegos, age 2 of Cloquet, kept up with the high-energy Go Fish band, jumping all over the grass in front of the stage through the band's various kid-friendly tunes. It...
It was a perfect breezy, not-too-hot Saturday for a parade, and kid and adult fun in Northridge Park during the fifth day of Esko Fun Days last week. County Highway 61 and Canosia Road was lined with people, especially kids eager for some candy. A walk down those streets after the parade showed that there was more than enough candy tossed, the streets remained littered with untouched packages of sweet stuff. It was food and inflatables, and the popular dunk tank in the park after the parade....
For 40 years, the city of Kettle River has celebrated Ma & Pa Kettle Days, designating a new "Ma & Pa" couple each year. Longtime community volunteers John Karulak and Kathy Siegle get the rocking chairs of honor this year. John has been on the family farm in Split Rock Township all his life. His great-grandfather settled the homestead in 1888 and was also named John Karulak. An immigrant from Poland, John's great-grandfather built a farm on the land while harvesting timber to make a living....

The setting sun shimmering across Lac La Belle on Tuesday evening at the Historic Scott House created a perfect backdrop for the Summer Sparkler event presented by the Lyric Opera of the North. The annual event is essentially a casual garden party with food, beverages, conversation, and an outdoor concert performance on the lawn near the shore of the lake in Twin Lakes Township south of Carlton. About 125 people attended the 2024 Summer Sparkler. "It's always great to host Lyric Opera of the...
National Night Out was celebrated across Carlton County Tuesday. In addition, there was plenty of food, a spirited squirt gun fight, baby animals, and bounce houses....
The annual Brickyard Days parade in Wrenshall took its time making its way down the main drag from the convenience store to the firehall, starting with all kinds of firetrucks and ending with three women on horseback, who stopped frequently to say hello to friends or visit children who wanted a closer look. There was no shortage of candy, nor of children to gather it into bags, pockets and even an upside down umbrella. The crowd migrated to the firehall for ice cream following the parade, which...
About two weeks ago, I attended the 60-year reunion of the Cloquet High School Class of 1964. If some of you are trying to figure out my age, I am 78 years young. To be honest, I have not attended some of the previous reunions for one reason or another. But I was determined to go to this one. It was held during a bright sunny summer day at the Big Lake Golf Club. No fancy food or program, just a nice get-together. It gave each of us a chance to say hello and talk to classmates we had not seen...
This weekend belongs to Carlton ... and all the thousands of people who will descend upon the small city to celebrate Carlton Daze, Paddlemania and the Voyageur Ultramarathon. There are so many events, it takes two pages to list them all (see Pages 10-11). Making that many things happen is a group effort, said Daisy Rose, Carlton Area Chamber of Commerce board member and Community Education director. "It's really a whole community thing," Rose said. "The Chamber promotes it as much as possible...
With plenty of water in the St. Louis River this year, the Fin Falls race returns to Paddlemania Saturday, said organizer Cliff Langley, calling it more of a sprint race. Kayakers will still paddle from just below the Thomson Dam to just above the rapids upstream of the swinging lift bridge at Jay Cooke State Park. From there, they will paddle the rapids upstream of the bridge - where spectators get excellent views of the action - then pass under the bridge about 100 years to where the river...

This year's activities featured a parade, live music, food trucks, kids' races and bouncy houses, a car and tractor show, along with the annual mixed volleyball and softball tournaments. There was also a silent auction and button raffle for prizes. Known for the emphasis on...
National Moth Week is July 20-28 and what could be better than this? Floodwood photographer John Dahlman just happened to share this photo of a primrose moth (Schinia florida) hiding in an evening primrose flower. "They are very adapted to their environment and blend in perfectly with the blooms that have expired," Dahlman wrote. According to bugguide.net, the yellow and pink adult primrose moths like to rest on primrose flower stems or inside blooms during the day, and fly at night. They lay...
