This week, we're happy to share more of what the Pine Knot News has learned about the 5,000-pound millstone pulled by the city of Cloquet from resident Bill Stolberg's yard. The millstone was used at the paper mill in pulp manufacturing. It would be "mounted on a geared pedestal ... and the pulp fiber would be crushed between the rotating millstone and a stationary stone," said an email from Sappi's Tom Radovich, managing director of the mill in Cloquet. The fiber was pinched and elongated...
Kettle River's main street was bustling Saturday, as the small town celebrated its annual Ma & Pa Kettle Days event. Politicians, vendors and others – including the Moose Lake Historical Society and the Starr Club – lined the city's Main Street. The sounds of music from under the big top provided a backdrop for many conversations between old friends, shoppers and those trying to decide which candidate they will vote for. Dan Reed, who orchestrated this year's event with a committee of vol...
Thousands of people descended on Cloquet's Veterans Park on Saturday to enjoy music mixed with prayer and plenty of fun as the Wood City Worship Festival kicked off its eighth event in the past nine years. Lee Harris, who organizes the annual event as part of the Kingdom Builders Ministry group, was thrilled with the turnout. Although it hadn't quite reached pre-pandemic levels by late Saturday afternoon, he predicted even more people would arrive for headliner Cory Asbury that night. Harris sai...
Gordy's annual Curbside Classic car show drew a full parking lot and long lines of customers and classic car enthusiasts on Thursday night, Aug. 4, with more than 150 cars cruising to the popular Cloquet restaurant. Gordy's owner Dan Lundquist said they present five "best of show" trophies each year, which go to the most popular as determined by customer and car show participant votes. The Shirley's Choice award honors the wife of Mike Tillman, the founder of many Northland car shows. The final...
Thank you to the members of the city council, city employees, fire department and police and anyone else who worked so hard putting together the National Night Out event in Kettle River. About 100 people attended, and roughly 20 children got rides in the firetruck. An excellent meal was also provided in addition to gifts for the children. Fortunately, the rain held off until nearly everyone had left. Thanks, too, to the crew that spent time in the hot sun to get the crosswalks painted on Highway 73 at the post office crossing and also at the...
Recently, I spent four hours going through and organizing all the Cromwell-Wright yearbooks (formerly known as “The Cromwellian”) I have collected over the years. To my surprise, I have four file boxes of duplicate yearbooks. Since I do have every one of the yearbooks starting with the 1925 issue, I am wondering if there is anyone reading this who would like to have any of these duplicates? I don’t have duplicates of every year, but I may have the one(s) you may want. It was fun getting them...
Esko added a whole new layer to its annual Esko Fun Days celebration, by inviting every single graduate of the 102-year-old school to come back next week for an all-school reunion. Work toward organizing the reunion and school centennial actually began a few years ago, because the school opened in 1920. "Then Covid struck," said Maggie Sunnarborg. So they decided that celebrating the centennial a couple years later was fine too, and made plans to bring together as many graduates as possible for...
Wrenshall residents came together to celebrate Brickyard Days Friday and Saturday. It was hectic, but it's worth it, Phyllis Rousseau said. "Every town has something, a community gathering, where you can see your friends, your community, your neighbor," she said. Organizer Jolene Johnson added she's gotten a lot of positive feedback from people. "I feel like our community has been pushing apart, so I'm really happy this is something we can do together," she said. "Without any negative...
There was magic in the air at the Oldenburg House last weekend, along with plenty of music. Revelers could find a jazz quartet and a mermaid at the pool, a maypole and dancing, riotous music under the big tent, a yurt down by the river, and lots of pro-pollinator activities for young and old alike. Pine Knot photographers were there, to enjoy all the fun....
Head to Kettle River Saturday for some small-town fun. The street fair runs 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Expect at least 30 exhibitors. Enjoy homemade pie, ice cream and something to drink from noon to 2 p.m. at the senior citizens building next to the firehall. Bingo, called by Kettle River's Rick Gresczyk, runs 1 to 4 p.m. in the Veterans building. Find miniature golf near the firehall all day and maybe into the night, depending on interest, run by Todd Lawrence. Later in the afternoon, Tony Tracy and a collection of local musicians will play...
The problem this weekend isn’t finding something to do, it’s choosing among the myriad options right here in Carlton County. There are Fun Days in Esko, Brickyard Days in Wrenshall and a Honey Bee Festival in Carlton, not to mention a music festival in Askov for those who fancy a road trip. Like parades? You’ll have to choose between Esko and Wrenshall on Saturday morning. Bingo? Head to Wrenshall’s Deer Park early Saturday afternoon. Music more your thing? The Honey Bee Festival at the Oldenbu...

The fifth annual Honey Bee Festival is all about its namesake, but also music and mermaids, food and fun and whatever else comes to mind. "We're just doing what we do: being crazy and loving the bees," said Glenn Swanson, who produces the annual event with his partner and wife, Emily. It is a unique festival. Held on the grounds of the Oldenburg House at 604 Chestnut Ave. in Carlton - their bed and breakfast and entertainment venue - the event combines music and the arts with sophistication and...
Live jazz is a beautiful experience. Last Sunday afternoon, husband Rod and I drove to Dovetail Cafe & Marketplace on West Superior Street in Duluth. My cousin, Beth Wilson – a former choral director at Cloquet High School – and her friend Pete had saved a table for us. It's an intimate space, a long, high-ceilinged room with a beautiful multicolored brick wall running its length. Nursing mugs of hot coffee, we sat within yards of musicians Paul Lerino (keyboard), Rich Mowers (saxophones), Joh...
Early last month, Wrenshall's Jolene Johnson went to talk to a coach about getting the cheerleaders into the Brickyard Days parade, only to be told that the annual event had been canceled. She was flabbergasted, and almost immediately decided she would take it on. Within days, her mom, Phyllis Rousseau, promised to help and the pair jumped on board, with a month to make it happen. During an interview Tuesday, they were frazzled, but excited. The small town of Wrenshall will be hopping this...
Carlton Daze got off to a running start last weekend, with kids' races and the annual 5K race Friday evening followed by the 50-mile Voyageur Ultramarathon Saturday. The annual event offered a little bit of everything: lots of music and food options, tournaments galore, a car show, kids' coin digs and kayak races for older, bolder folk. Kim and Sue Newman of Barnum came for the car show Saturday, staying to eat Julie's egg rolls. "We had a few of these cars, then kids came along," said Kim. But...
When Carlton throws a party, expect big things. And there’s nothing bigger than the annual Carlton Daze celebration, which kicks off Friday and runs through Sunday, July 29-31. Curious garden enthusiasts were treated to pleasant weather and diverse gardens during the annual tour. According to one tour stop host, well over 100 visitors stopped by to peek and take longer...

I am really looking forward to National Night Out in Kettle River, scheduled for 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2 at the Kettle River senior center. This is a chance to visit with friends and neighbors while enjoying hamburgers and hot dogs. I think there will be firetruck rides for the kids and maybe the mounted police will also be there. Have you noticed that there is equipment at the water tower? Come to the next Kettle River city council meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9 in the council room for an update on what is happening with this project and...
We have had a piano in our living room for years now. The only time it is used is to hold lots of photos and things on the top and the keyboard cover. I never learned to play the piano and neither did my kids, even if I had them take lessons. So, now we would like to get it out of the house, but you probably know what that means. Who wants it, and how to move it? Piano sales have been decreasing for decades. In 1900, when our American population was around 76 million, 171,000 pianos were sold....
The Carlton County Historical Society asked and Corky Mackey replied. All CCHS knew was that the photo above was of Billy Pederson's second-grade class in 1950. They didn't have a school, teacher's name or any other details. Well, it turns out that it was also Mackey's second-grade class at Moose Lake Elementary School. The teacher was Mrs. Nelson. Mackey was even able to identify every child in the photo, beginning with the row farthest to the right: Maryanne Degruglier (spelling?), Laurene...
