Spates of rain did not deter Carlton County's honor guards as they made their solemn rounds on Memorial Day Monday. Over the last week I found a deer tick, a blacklegged tick, and a wood tick, all in very uncomfortable proximity to my body. After hearing from an area resident who contracted Lyme disease, I am adding my voice to others’ (including singer Brad Paisley) to encourage nightly tick checks. In doing some research on best repellents, it seems that products with picaridin are rated the highest and are also safe to use on bare skin. We’ve found that making sure our animals are up to date on tick repellent medication also helps keeps the bugs to a low... Full story
Have you ever seen coins lying on a headstone? Leaving a coin lets the deceased soldier's family know that somebody stopped by to pay their respects. If you leave a penny, it means you visited. A nickel means you and the deceased soldier trained at boot camp together. If you served with the soldier, you leave a dime. A quarter is very significant because it means that you were there when that soldier was killed. This tradition became popular in the United States during the Vietnam War as a way,... Full story
