Spring has finally arrived. The sun has been shining, the temperature has been decent and I have finally been able to get my Christmas yard decorations put away. The plants in my flower beds are starting to peek through the soil, reaching for the warmth of the sunshine. It is time to start checking out The Greenhouse, our local greenhouse located right here in Carlton. Happy planting! Molly Kidd can't remember the last time her art students at Wrenshall School were able to show off their work to family and friends, but colleague and school music teacher Tim Rahkola knows exactly when it was. "We were planning for a spring Grandparents Day in 2020," Rahkola told me, "when everything got shut down." The two arts specialists have been planning a return to the spring tradition this Friday, May 6, as a way for students to celebrate creative pursuits and show off the newly...

While it lacked the visual excitement of scores of children running around picking up brightly colored eggs like tiny vacuum cleaners, Saturday's Skate with the Easter Bunny event was a hit with kids and parents. Everyone could skate for free indoors, with music blaring and the Easter Bunny and the Lumberjacks mascot both hitting the ice. In the lobby there was popcorn, face painting and Easter crowns to be colored. Although there were no plastic Easter eggs in sight, every child could grab a...

As I sit down to write this week’s news, it’s snowing — again. When will this winter weather end? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. And now, as of Monday morning, I see we must have gotten over 6 inches of the white stuff. Our sincere sympathy to the family of Lincoln Hansen, who passed away at the Villa Vista in Cromwell. Funeral arrangements are pending. More than 30 members of the Young Old Timers met for the annual Easter dinner and get-together on April 12 at the Cromwell Pavilio...
Earlier this month, many area churches and nonprofit organizations came together to sponsor a concert at Common Ground Coffee Bar & Deli with national recording artist Remedy Drive. For the last eight years, the alternative rock band has been using music to shine a light on human trafficking by helping fund the nonprofit The Exodus Road with more than $500,000 in donations. The April 6 event was hosted and promoted by Kingdom Builders Ministries, who hopes to host more of these community action...
The Carlton County Historical Society has this iconic photo of a Greyhound bus with formal lettering on the border saying, simply, “Barnum, Minnesota.” It’s as if it were a promotional piece or souvenir photo. Who knows? Close inspection shows that it was a charter bus, so perhaps this was a special occasion back in the 1950s. Was there a bus stop in Barnum? Can you divine where this photo was taken, given the background? Let us know at the History Mystery desk, news@PineKnot...

It was an exciting night in the Cromwell-Wright school auditorium last Thursday. It began with 11 of our high school choral students singing their hearts out in solos, duets, and ensembles. The solos included two operatic pieces, both in Italian. Andrea Pocernich sang “Che Fiero Costume,” an Italian aria that furiously castigates Cupid for his machinations as a “tyrannous mentor.” Lithuanian exchange student Augustas Poskus sang the powerful “Vittoria, Mio Core,” celebrating the protagonist...
Since the Mesabi Symphony Orchestra first performed in Moose Lake in 2018, residents have been asking: “When can we get them back?” The answer is April 24. The 40-member community orchestra serves the Iron Range region and was founded in 1978. It will play the iconic and rousing piece “Finlandia” by Jean Sibelius. First pe...
“Suite Surrender” has surrendered to the pandemic, at least for now. The first weekend was postponed when one actor got Covid, now the second weekend is also postponed after two more actors came down with the bug. “We decided to stop all rehearsals and shows to let our actors recoup and to stop further infections,” said general manager Joel Soukkala. “We have taken Covid very seriously over the last few years while still finding ways to be creative.” The County Seat Theater Company will now present live performances of ‘Suite Surrender’ on...

Lane Johnson, a researcher at the Cloquet Forestry Center, knows a needle in the haystack when he sees one. "I have a photo mystery I wonder if your readers might be able to solve." He's looking for an original print of a photograph scan he found in the Carlton County Historical Society records for the forestry center. The image title reads: "Presbyterian Church Picnic, Forestry Station, Cloquet." "It seems the print was part of a photograph collection scanned by the (museum) some time ago but...
Local historian, playwright, journalist and storyteller Dan Reed will be selling (and signing) copies of his new book, “We spoke of many things,” during the Knot Gallery art reception Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Pine Knot News office at 122 Avenue C in Cloquet. Although the book is a historical narrative of Reed’s extended family, he said readers have told them they recognize echoes of their own family experience. Check out next week’s Pine Knot News for a story about the book, Reed and a l...

Contributing photographer John Dahlman of Floodwood is seeing a host of activity in his backyard as spring gradually comes to the region. He spotted this bobcat on two days in mid-March. And the birds are coming and going as well. A blast of ice and snow in the middle of this week put a damper on the human notion that spring has sprung. If you have wildlife or nature shots you'd like to share, please send them to us at: [email protected]...
Jane (Bimberg) Oswold was good enough to spend some time with this picture we presented in February of the sixth-grade class at the old Scanlon school in 1962. After all, she's in the picture. Middle row: Bev Bruno, Milt Zezulka, John Everson, Sue Bruno, and Sue Mell. Back row: Bill Kelly, Carol Morken, Adele...
