I forgot to mention that this year’s homecoming queen was the 75th in school history and the king was the 65th. Homecoming began in 1948 with the crowning of Jean Heikkila. The first king was Dennis Korpela in 1958. Congrats to Zevvus Smith and Natalee Hakamaki for keeping this fine tradition going. There is a complete list of all the homecoming royalty on the trophy case by the school office. The school reports that there is an increasing amount of reported and confirmed Covid, influenza, and o...

    Pine Knot News|Jan 28, 2022

A group advancing the idea of a Carlton County animal shelter is holding its next meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3 at the VFW in Carlton. Anyone is welcome to attend. Carlton County has not had a local humane society since the Friends of Animals Humane Society closed its doors the summer of 2018, due to financial stresses and an inadequate building. Since then, local officials have put funds previously paid to the humane society toward low-cost spay/neuter programs as well as free microchipping clinics. The police department and Facebook...

Using American Rescue Plan money, an action committee of residents and city officials in western Carlton County has been formed for the Minnesota Highway 73 reconstruction in Cromwell. The goal is to encourage the Minnesota legislature to help fund reconstruction of an 8-mile stretch of Highway 73 south of Cromwell. The decades-old section has been funded several times in the past but work has never been done. Money has been siphoned for other projects where more people are affected. The road...

  • Stutter steps in pandemic marathon

    Pine Knot News|Jan 21, 2022

Test your short-term memory with this last installment of the 2021 year in review, covering September through December. It includes the continuing waves of Covid-19 spread and some wins in the “back to normal” department, including the return of free holiday meals in Cloquet. September The Thomson Township board of supervisors’ approval on Sept. 2 of a snowmobile trail alongside township roads, to be built and maintained by the Wood City Riders Snowmobile Club, got some attention from residents who felt blindsided by the decision. It would...

  • On The Mark: Music and dancing bring joy to center

    Ann Markusen|Jan 21, 2022

Last week, residents of Cromwell's Cardinal Court and Villa Vista care complex were treated to the rousing music of Florian Chmielewski's accordion and his banter between numbers. Lots of laughter, giggling, and smiles. Such periodic events at the Villa are coordinated by Julie Hedin, the Villa's social director. Rod Walli and I like to go, both to visit residents and to dance, if it's appropriate. And dance we did: polkas and waltzes, surrounded by residents and guests. I haven't mastered the...

  • History Mystery

    Pine Knot News|Jan 14, 2022

Here are a couple of photos from the Carlton County Historical Society that aren't neccessarily "mysteries" as they are just interesting portaits of people in a certain time. But the museum does have just minimal information on them. The picture of the three men above simple say "Mahtowa" on the back. The photo at left is inscribed "Wright MN. Photo by Harry Bergstrom." If you have any information, or interesting photos you'd like to share, send them to [email protected]...

  • Wrens Nest: Winter brings much work on farms

    Anne Dugan|Jan 14, 2022

At a recent Carlton County Board of Commissioners meeting, one member asked the audience, “What do farmers actually do in the winter?” While I was initially a taken aback by the question — being married to a farmer I see firsthand the amount of work that goes into running an operation — I decided that I should treat the query as curiosity rather than dismiss it as woeful ignorance. In our household, my husband cuts back to about 50 or 60 hours a week versus the 80 he spends during the growing...

Our sympathies to the family of Liz Thom, 76, who died Jan. 5, 2022. Her nursing career included serving as a school, clinic and home care nurse in Cromwell and for Carlton County Public Health. She was also a leader in Christian education and music in Cromwell and other areas churches. Services were scheduled for Jan. 13. Jill Eichenwald recently emailed, thanking me for my list of those who passed in 2021; and although she doesn’t know many people in the area anymore, she does “like to sen...

  • Year In Review: Pandemic continued its impact in 2021

    Pine Knot News|Jan 7, 2022

After a rough, Covid-19- pandemic-ridden 2020, the year 2021 was destined to be better, right? Well, the jury hasn’t reached a decision yet. There were highs and lows, as the pandemic continued to alter life as we knew it before 2020. There’s a vaccine, which has helped ease the naked fear of contracting the virus. There has been mostly in-person learning this school year and many of the events around schools are back to normal. Cities held modified annual celebrations. But Covid spikes continue, with infections breaking records even now, so...

    Jennie K. Hanson|Jan 7, 2022

Here’s a heartwarming story to start off the new year. Brandon Gresczyk was out fishing with his boys on Woodbury Lake when they saw an injured swan. His wife and a son followed its tracks to the bridge on the Tamarack River, where there was open water. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said it couldn’t do anything for the swan, so Brandon posted on Facebook and an amazing volunteer came from Minneapolis and rescued the swan. It had a broken wing and is now going to an animal rehab f...

Andrew Morrisette, the band director, led various instrumentalists through rousing, energetic pieces...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Pine Knot News|Dec 31, 2021

I was encouraged to see so many folks attending Christmas Eve services in our area churches. It seems that we sometimes forget the reason for the season, but when folks come together to worship together it renews our faith in humankind. Now we can look forward to the new year and hopefully better times. So, have a merry and blessed 2022. It seems that we are getting more and more scam calls now. Lately, scammers pretending to be pastors are sending emails and texts, saying they need a favor from you in the form of gift cards. Please don’t fall...

    Jennie K. Hanson|Dec 24, 2021

As this year comes to a close in just a few days, I wish you safe travels and gatherings and a very merry Christmas. Worship services on Christmas Eve at Bethlehem are at 4 p.m. and at Bethany at 7 p.m. No services on Christmas Day, but regular worship on Sunday, Dec. 26. Ann Heikkila informed me that Dorothy Maxine Holecek, 94, of Duluth passed away Dec. 13, 2021. She was a teacher and simply loved to teach, especially home economics. She worked in many of the surrounding areas, including...

  • DAV offers free Christmas dinner

    Pine Knot News|Dec 17, 2021

Veterans don’t let a little thing like a closed dining hall stop one of the biggest community meals of the year. When the Carlton County Disabled American Veterans chapter learned that the usual site of the annual Christmas dinner in Cloquet was a no-go because of the pandemic, they sprang into action. Instead of just cooking the annual meal, the DAV is now running it and hosting it from a new base of operations at the Cloquet VFW, 210 Arch Street. Everyone is invited to enjoy a free sit-down or pickup meal from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on C...

  • History Mystery

  • Cold follows wind-whipped snowstorm

    Jana Peterson|Dec 10, 2021

Snow removal crews were out in Cloquet Monday in the West End on Avenue C after a weekend storm left a few inches on the ground across Carlton County, the first significant snowfall of the season. There were blizzard conditions farther north, with 12-18 inches reported along the North Shore and inland past Two Harbors. The Sunday snow was met with sub-zero temperatures Monday and Tuesday. There was some warming later in the week. Expect another warming trend this weekend with highs reaching...

  • Photographers deck the walls at Pine Knot

    Ann Markusen|Dec 10, 2021

The Knot Gallery's current exhibit features two area photographers whose subjects are all "out of doors." Colorful and majestic framed landscapes by retired Raiter Clinic physician Dan Malkovich hang along the multi-colored brick wall at the Pine Knot News office on Avenue C. Among his framed prints, we've interspersed Will Stenberg's remarkable wildlife photos, often intimate with flashes of movement. Last week, we held an opening for the two artists during the West End open house that helped k...
