Last week I won a Jennie-O turkey at the Village Pump Saloon in Tamarack. The turkeys needed to be picked up at the Farmers Co-op in Wright, so when I left the co-op board meeting, I grabbed the turkey and threw it on the front seat of my little Chevy Spark and headed home. It didn’t take long before the passenger side seat belt alarm went off, and it wouldn’t stop. Well, I wasn’t going to stop to belt in the turkey, so just had to deal with the beep, beep, beep until I got home, which was o...

  • Volunteers drive DAV's gift of holiday meals

    Jana Peterson|Dec 3, 2021

The Carlton County DAV set a record with this year's community Thanksgiving: 900 meals served. And they did it in half the space they usually have. Because the kitchen and dining hall at Zion Lutheran Church weren't available due to the pandemic, the Disabled American Veterans volunteers consolidated operations at the Cloquet VFW. "It was definitely congested, to say the least," said the DAV's Raffy Johnson, who has spearheaded the event since the DAV took over five years ago. They had people...

  • Celebrate the holidays in Cloquet today

    Jana Peterson|Dec 3, 2021

It looks like Mother Nature is giving Santa time to celebrate in Cloquet before the snow falls. Santa's Home for the Holidays festivities are in full swing after kicking off Thursday night with Mrs. Claus at the library and a West End open house that saw a healthy number of citizens strolling through the city's oldest business district. Last night, Queen of Peace hosted Santa (with photos by Alan Johnson) at a spaghetti feed and craft show. Today, however, is the big day. Things started early...

    Jana Peterson|Nov 26, 2021

Don't worry, Kids, Santa is making his way to Carlton County again. The Santa's Home for the Holidays festivities are back, thanks to the United Way of Carlton County. "The United Way is proud to support community events like Santa's Home for the Holidays. We are looking forward to a fun weekend full of holiday spirit," said United Way executive director Ali Bilden Camps. Of course, like any event during the pandemic, there were a few changes but all of the most important elements are intact....

  • Wright-Cromwell News

    Jennie K. Hanson|Nov 26, 2021

It was 18 years ago Nov. 22 that my mom, Katharine Dahlman, suffered a stroke in her Southview Apartment. She spent the next five months in the Sunnyside nursing home before she died. Ironically, Lindsay Lally gave me a small painting of my mom’s when we were at the Bethany church bazaar Saturday — almost like a message from Mom. Mom had been at the Country Inn restaurant that morning and then went home to make her famous lemon meringue pies for the bazaar. She collapsed before the pies wer...

  • Weekly radio reporters

    Pine Knot News|Nov 19, 2021

Mystery solved, and by a subscriber at that. Del Prevost is the lone male in the two pictures printed last week that we received from the Carlton County Historical Society. He said Cloquet High School students once went to the WKLK radio station to provide a weekly report on what was happening in the Cloquet school system. Various students would go to the station each week, Prevost said. He can be found in the picture at right with fellow senior Sue Mylander Peterson in January of 1968. The...

    Pine Knot News|Nov 12, 2021

The Carlton County Historical Society sent us some photos that it would like to know more about. The two photos shown above simply say "CHS Reporters" on the back. A calendar seen in the one with the microphone is displaying January of 1968. If you know any more about these photos, the people shown here and the circumstances, send us an email at [email protected], with History in the subject line. We'll gather what comes in and let everyone know. Two weeks ago, we featured a picture of...

  • This is Halloween

    Jana Peterson|Nov 5, 2021

Halloween came to Carlton in a big way Sunday afternoon, with more than a thousand costumed children and adults heading downtown for the now annual trick-or-treat event. Business owners dressed up as well, but were mostly too busy to visit as they gave away bags and bags of candy to the crowds that thronged the sidewalks for a solid two hours. Carlton Area Chamber of Commerce president Shanna Wolf estimated close to 1,300 revelers came through, in costumes that varied from massive blowup...

  • Mission accomplished: Candy delivered

    Jana Peterson|Nov 5, 2021

With Covid-19 still circulating, this was the second year in a row that Sunnyside Health Care Center could not open its doors to trick-or-treaters on Halloween. But Sunnyside residents and staff came up with a sweet idea to save Halloween. They filled bags of donated candy for the 366 students at nearby Churchill Elementary School Thursday. In fact, they collected so much candy from Sunnyside, Community Memorial Hospital and Raiter Clinic employees that they were also able to donate to three...

  • County historical society hires a director

    Mike Creger|Oct 29, 2021

The coffee is on at the Carlton County Historical Society. What may seem like a small gesture means a lot to the society's new director, Carol Klitzke. It's been 19 months since the museum on Cloquet Avenue has been able to freely entertain visitors and ask them to come by to just chat. That's how Klitzke would like to mark her tenure. "Come in and say hi," she said this week, her first officially as the director. She was happy to talk with a visitor Monday who eventually said she knew Klitzke...

  • Theater has second take on outdoor spookiness

    Pine Knot News|Oct 22, 2021

    Jennie K. Hanson|Oct 15, 2021

In 1971, 50 years ago, the Floodwood school board voted to allow female teachers and staff to wear pantsuits for the first time. I think the other area schools also allowed women to wear slacks to school around this time. Now, I don’t think I see a female working at our schools in a dress or skirt more than once or twice a month. And yesterday, when I was shopping in Duluth, I saw only one woman wearing a dress and she was likely more than 80 years old. I also remember that the girls had to w...
