  • Fair draws a big crowd

    Pine Knot News|Aug 27, 2021

After a slow start to the Carlton County Fair on a hot Thursday, attendance numbers rose as the temperatures dropped. "It was absolutely full on Saturday," said fair manager Lindsey Larson. "We thought we were going to run out of parking. Vendors ran out of food, the midway (people) said they did awesome. When we looked out the window of the office, it was hectic." She wasn't exaggerating. The back parking lot was nearly full by noon Saturday and fairgoers had to take a long walk to get to the r...

  • Free Range films return

    Mike Creger|Aug 27, 2021

The heat is finally breaking this late Friday afternoon on another 90-something degree day in Carlton County. The dry, hot summer has the poplars yielding, yet it still seems far too early for downed yellow leaves to be dancing along the roadsides on a drive to a barn in rural Wrenshall. A persistent wind has kept the day from being totally oppressive, and it is quite pleasant on the grounds of the Free Range Film Festival a few hours before the first of two 7 p.m. showings of short films last...

    Pine Knot News|Aug 20, 2021

The annual Christian music festival made its comeback after missing 2020 due to Covid and had a good day, according to organizers, although attendance was down somewhat. Like many things after the pandemic, the Christian music festival was changed. No. 1, it was renamed the Wood City Worship Festival. Lee Harris, who helps lead the Kingdom Builders Ministry that puts on the annual festival, said they hit the reset button during the pandemic, both for the Common Ground Coffee Bar & Deli in...

  • Carlton news

    Anne Dugan|Aug 20, 2021

Although summer is winding down, we can still enjoy the warm temperatures and our favorite ice cream treat. I thought back to when I was a kid and my mom would buy one pint of ice cream from Bystrom's Grocery on the corner of Highway 33 and Freeman Road in Sunnyside. That pint of vanilla ice cream would be divided into five slices and served on homemade apple pie or cantaloupe for a Sunday evening treat for my family. In those days we bought ice cream in small amounts because the freezer...

Carlton's South Terrace Elementary hosted the popular Summer Learning Camp in the first week of August. The 36 elementary school-aged students displayed "great curiosity and enthusiasm while learning about this year's theme: Flight and Outer Space," said camp director Sam Kavanaugh, a Carlton graduate, Twin Cities area teacher, and recent Jeopardy! Game show champion. Among a variety of activities, campers designed flying machines, made models of the solar system and earth's atmosphere, and...

  • Old cars rule the Northland

    Jana Peterson|Aug 13, 2021

Hot-rodders and other car enthusiasts had a good run last week, with two car shows in two days within a 15-minute drive of Cloquet. First up was the Smalley-Moen Memorial car show at Buffalo House on Wednesday. Cars were parked on the softball field and around the expansive grounds of the popular destination restaurant and activity center. On Thursday, Gordy's Hi-Hat held its Curbside Classic despite foreboding clouds and eventually rain. The weather didn't seem to bother most of the car owners...

  • Opera comes to the country

    Anne Dugan|Aug 13, 2021

The opera is coming to the shores of Lac La Belle Tuesday, Aug. 17. The Lyric Opera of the North, or LOON, as it is lovingly called, will be presenting its Summer Sparkler event in person on the grounds of the Historic Scott House. When the artists take the stage, it will have been 585 days since the company performed in front of a live audience, and artistic director Sarah Lawrence admits, “I’ve had lots of tears. • Wright/cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|Aug 13, 2021

The Extreme Team youth group had a very successful car wash last weekend. We have to give these kids and their adult leaders a lot of credit for earning their way to the ELCA national youth convention next summer in Minneapolis. They will need to earn about $18,000 for the group to attend and they are only partway to meeting this goal. The family of Mary Purcell had an informal celebration of life gathering for her Aug. 6 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright. There were five beautifully done...

On the evenings of Aug. 20-21, the Dugan and Fisher- Merritt clan will again host the Free Range Film Festival at their heritage barn in Wrenshall. Screening the films ahead of time, I’ve marveled and enjoyed the range of offerings, short to long, reflective to performative. Beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, the first evening’s 15 films — some short, some longer — offer us personality profiles, small and exceptional spaces and impressionistic journeys, as well as adventurers and competitors in action....

  • Brickyard Days returns to Wrenshall

    Dan Saletel|Aug 13, 2021

The rain held off long enough Saturday to allow folks to enjoy the Brickyard Days parade, then Mother Nature delivered some much needed moisture to Carlton County's growing agricultural center. The parade lasted about 40 minutes, and featured everything from firetrucks to the Carlton Honor Guard and Raptors cheerleaders, to an accordion-playing skateboarder from Finland named Steve Solkela. Eldon and Karen Grover were grand marshals, riding in a red convertible through the center of town with...

  • Honey Bee Festival

    Jana Peterson|Aug 13, 2021

Things were buzzing at the Honey Bee Festival Friday, in a mellow laid back kind of way. Icon Man husband-and-wife duo Mothy and Diane Soden-Groves played for an audience in lawn chairs from the porch of the Oldenburg House, while other activities, events and commerce spread out across the grounds of the 125-year-old historic home. It was all about the bees, with honey-infused food and drink and bee-inspired arts and crafts, along with information galore to support pollinators, and plenty of...

  • Firefighters get valuable, real-world practice

    Jana Peterson|Jul 30, 2021

Where there's smoke, there's fire ... unless you happen to be a firefighter in training. For a couple weeks now, firefighters from the Cloquet Area Fire District have been putting on their gear and driving various fire trucks and emergency vehicles to Dunlap Island to practice on a real building that they will burn in their final practice sometime in August. It's a two-story wooden building with a long history -- as a bar, a boarding house and more -- but in recent years it's simply been an...
