Boy, we went from freezing temperatures one week to temps in the 90s now. I guess that’s why we live in this area, you never know what the weather will bring. Let’s hope we get some rain soon, as the gardens need moisture. There will be a blood donation drive noon to 6 p.m. June 24 inside the Cromwell Park Pavilion. Call Ray Lally at 218-644-3739 to sign up for a time to donate. Because the drive is taking place inside the pavilion, there will not be a YOT Senior Dance until July 22. God...
Accustomed to running the entire Veterans Services program on the Fond du Lac reservation, Vietnam War veteran Tommy Whitebird was overcome by emotion remembering the friends and fellow soldiers who fell in Vietnam, and those who died years later from the effects of the war: both emotional and physical. But he was happy to see the more than 75 people gathered at Cloquet's Veterans Park Monday to pay their respects on Memorial Day. Others gathered at cemeteries and events across Carlton County,...
Practice makes perfect ... or at least it makes being trapped inside a hot, dark, loud burning building more tolerable. Members of the Cromwell-Wright fire district - along with firefighters from Carlton, Mahtowa, Blackhoof and Floodwood - spent four hours on a weekend in May practicing their firefighting skills with a live fire. Cromwell-Wright fire chief Lucas Goodin said such practice burns are vital to training because they offer real-life conditions versus more usual training, which often i...
High schools across the county celebrated graduation Friday with confetti, speeches and congratulations, and the tossing of brightly colored caps up into the air, to celebrate the end of an unprecedented school year fully gripped by the Covid-19 pandemic. In Cloquet, graduation was held outside on the football field, with graduates and families on or near the field and other audience members in the bleachers. In Carlton, Wrenshall, Cromwell and the Fond du Lac Ojibwe school, the ceremonies were...
The Floodwood VFW Post 8299 was at Wright Park for Memorial Day services. This year, Wes Heikkila was the honored veteran, as he passed away June 25, 2020. I also see that the veterans memorial in the Wright Park has been shored up. The parents of Cromwell-Wright students send a huge thank-you to all the teachers and staff for their extremely hard work and perseverance throughout the school year. Thank you for keeping our kids in the school to optimize their learning experience. Your hard work...
Jodie White's piano students presented a recital May 23 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Cloquet. Parents, grandparents and families gathered to hear each student, ranging from first-graders to ninth-graders, performed solos and duets. Piano students go to schools in Cloquet, Esko and Duluth. A reception followed the recital. White has taught piano for 30 years, the last three being in Cloquet. In the front row are, from left to right, Jasper Swanson, Oliver Swanson, Tucker Fagre, Kyleigh...
While military organizations visited local cemeteries last Memorial Day despite the pandemic, members are pleased that this year's events will look a little more normal - including the larger ceremonies at Cloquet's Veterans Park and Carlton's Hillside Cemetery on Monday. "It's been a pretty hard year for veterans," said Gary Dahl, senior vice commander of both the Cloquet VFW and DAV organizations. "We're just trying to make sure we catch up with people that have died over the past year. It's i...
Transitions can be stressful, but retiring Carlton County auditor/treasurer Kathy Korteum has had plenty of challenges in her less than two years at the helm of her department. But she's hoping to make the transition as smooth as possible for her successor, Kevin DeVriendt. If all goes as planned, DeVriendt and Korteum should be able to spend some time sharing ideas and the long history of the department before Korteum officially retires. That would be very unlike her first months in the role....
This is the first year Wrenshall has run a Gender-Sexualities Alliance club. I interviewed the co-advisors as well as the student leader of the group, and they told me about the importance of this group to the Wrenshall community. At first they were reluctant to share details, likening the group to a secret society, but eventually they came around and let me in on what they do in their tight-knit community. English teacher Ted Conover and media library assistant Chloe Swanson co-advise the...
I see the veterans memorial in the Wright park is being restored to its original condition. This has been a very sad sight for the past few months, but it is now going to be the tribute it should be. The Floodwood VFW Post 8299 will be at the Wright park for Memorial Day services on May 31, at 8 a.m. to honor our veterans. This year, Wes Heikkila will be the honored veteran, as he passed away June 25, 2020. His inurnment was at the Prairie Lake cemetery. Bring your American flags and wear red, w...
Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Social Services employees gather for a photo with the Pinwheels for Prevention Award from FamilyWise Services, a Minnesota nonprofit that works to create safe, healthy, and supportive environments for children and families. The award specifically highlighted the band's providing Circles of Security and Positive Parenting classes to parents virtually throughout the pandemic to accommodate caregivers. Adjustments to the pandemic were made in the past...
Early this morning, a ruby- throated hummingbird scouted our bird feeders, then departed for sweeter options. I poured sugar into a quart jar, added water and shook, retrieved and filled the feeders from the basement, and hung them out on their usual hooks. I'm hoping. Spring brings so many flashes of color into our winter-suppressed environs. And it's not just their raiment. High in the maples and oaks, a choir of goldfinches entertain us with their shared song. Other returnees engage in...
The Green House will soon be placing the beautiful hanging plants to brighten the main street of Carlton. I have mine ready to go, and with a little help they will be planted soon. I want to wish a happy birthday to everyone who is or will be 75 years old this year. It is amazing to me that we have lived three-quarters of a century, and that includes my classmates from the Class of 1964. The Carlton community blood drive is 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 1 at St. Frances Catholic Church,...
If at first you don't succeed, try, try again - in life as well as theater. After postponing its performance of "Finishing School" in 2020 because of the pandemic, the County Seat Theater Company will present Elaine Liner's comedy, opening next Friday. This comedy about life's second act finds older gents Al (Ken Peter) and Wizzer (Michael Rosen) meeting on a park bench every morning to read and mock newspaper obits. Their daily rituals - shooting the bull about sports, women loved and lost,...
Students at Cloquet's Washington Elementary had a change drive this spring. The Student Advisory Team members (third- and fourth- graders shown here) decided about a month ago that they wanted to organize and lead a change drive as a service project for the school. The students voted on donating proceeds to the B&B food train. In three weeks the students collected $1,611.74, with kindergarten leading the way with more than $500. John and Kim Lind from B&B as well as Deanna Wisneski from...
My son Truman came home last week talking about his class at Wrenshall riding bikes during Derek Duncan’s gym class. “The purple bikes are the big bikes and they have hand brakes and everything.” The past two weeks a host of bikes have been used by students to practice riding skills and the basics of cycling maintenance. I called Duncan, as I was curious about the program and in awe of how he manages to corral so many children on wheels: “I think it is such a great thing to learn — it’s a life s...
Cromwell-Wright families, we are able to have three more exchange students for next year. If you would like to learn more about the world, but are not wanting to travel yet, host an exchange student. Host families come in all shapes and sizes, and you just need to provide three meals a day and a place to sleep. Students are looking for American families to call their own. Call PAX coordinator Lori Wester at 218-343-8802. The last day of school at Cromwell-Wright is June 2, with graduation at 7 p...
It was yardwork on overdrive Friday when close to 100 Carlton students spent the morning cleaning yards, trailsides and the entire Hillside Cemetery in advance of the citywide brush collection Monday. "It's nice to see the kids out and about in the community, doing their part," said Leola Rodd, who has organized the annual cleanup since 2010. "And it's good for the kids to get out. We'll do it if somebody calls, I don't question eligibility. If you need your yard raked or want it raked, we will...

It’s that time again when we need to meet to decide what events we are having at this year’s Wrong Days in Wright celebration. Here’s a summary of last Wednesday’s meeting minutes: Planning: Linda Kalli contacted several vendors to see if they are interested in attending Wrong Days. Linda sent a donation request to Fond du Lac for a stay at Black Bear. Linda asked Rick Gresczyk to follow up with them. Linda contacted George Burton regarding fireworks. Workers for Andrew Elias Enterprises tackled one of their more challenging roofing jobs last month when they repaired part of the roof at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Cloquet.
