It’s that time again when we need to meet to decide what events we are having at this year’s Wrong Days celebration. Our first meeting was last Tuesday at Kalli’s. We will definitely need some more help, as Jake has retired from doing the steak fry and we still have no one to take over kids’ games and the coronation on Friday night. Please spread the word. If anyone is interested in helping out with the event, please let Linda Kalli know if you can help: 218-878-7876 or linda.k...

    Pine Knot News|Apr 30, 2021

Due to the pandemic, there will be no flapjacks this year for Harold's Flippin' Fiasco. Volunteers are, however, taking donations for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital on Saturday, May 1, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Four Corners, Carlton....

  • Pet Advice: Lost dogs need special treatment

    Amy Addy|Apr 30, 2021

"If I yell for my dog, I know they will come to me." We hear people say this all the time, but unfortunately 90 percent of the time it does not work, and it actually makes the dog run farther away. This behavior exhibited by lost dogs has absolutely nothing to do with their training, background, or love for their owners. Survival mode is a primal instinct for lost dogs. All they are thinking about is food, water, and shelter. Survival mode is what keeps lost dogs alive in a plethora of...

At the latest quarterly Carlton County Health and Human Services meeting April 12, I learned about the Covid-19 response here in Carlton County. According to HHS director Dave Lee, 50 percent of residents have been vaccinated, and we need to get about 5,000 more residents vaccinated to reach 70 percent. So, if you have yet to get vaccinated, please call the Minnesota Department of Health Covid-19 Public Hotline at 833-431-2053 or check the vaccination website vaccineconnector.mn.gov for more...

  • Carlton happenings

    Leola Rodd|Apr 23, 2021

As I write my article, the weather has taken a turn for dark clouds, overcast and rain (again). We are all waiting for the sun to shine and dry out our yards so the raking can begin. On Monday, May 10, the City of Carlton Public Works will gather the bags of leaves and last fall’s yard debris from community yards, to be added to the compost pile at the recycling shed. Carlton High School students and staff are volunteering to rake community members’ yards and pick up trash Friday, May 7. If you...

  • History mystery

    Pine Knot News|Apr 16, 2021

This week’s History Mystery is … where did the weekly History Mystery feature go? Nowhere. We’re still here. We have a few mysteries up our sleeve and have been waiting for the Carlton County Historical Society to open to the public once again. We’ve heard that some limited opportunities may be available soon. We continue to work on the Cloquet etymology question. We are also wondering what readers can tell us about the origins of other names in the county: mainly Carlton (which we have some information on) and Scanlon, which remains a bit of...

  • County Seat sells out live

    Pine Knot News|Apr 16, 2021

Although live performances of “Almost, Maine” by the County Seat Theater sold out this week, patrons can still buy tickets for virtual performances through April 18 at www.countyseattheater.com under the “tickets” section on the website. “Almost, Maine” is a romantic comedy about a place that’s “so far north, it’s almost not in the United States. It’s almost in Canada. And it’s not quite a town, because its residents never got around to getting organized. So it almost doesn’t exist.” The play shares nine short “magical moments” with au...

Spring has arrived, and how do I know? Well, I heard the frogs croaking April 6 in our pond in the yard. But I still haven’t seen a robin. I’ll keep watching for them. Did you know that you can have fresh, warm meals delivered to your home on Tuesdays? Volunteer Services of Carlton County is pleased to provide this service, and all you have to do is call 218-879-9238 by 2 p.m. Thursdays to order (please leave a message because of the great volume of calls). The Streetcar Kitchen in Carlton pre...

  • Burgeoning spring harbingers

    Pine Knot News|Apr 9, 2021

Amatuer photographer John Dahlman shared a few signs of spring with the Pine Knot News this week. The photos of the swans, and the male and female mallard ducks, were taken while driving his local country roads. The pussy willows grow on Dahlman's property in the Floodwood area. Dahlman said he uses a point-and-shoot camera (Nikon P900) to take his photos, and he loves the 83x zoom because he often has to shoot from the hip when trying to capture whitetail deer and other fast-moving wildlife. It...

  • Wrenshall News: Sunflowers bring light

    Anne Dugan|Apr 9, 2021

I don’t know if it was the warmest Easter on record, but it sure felt special to be outside without winter gear last weekend. We celebrated with family outside around the pizza oven and feasted on ham and pineapple toppings, with plenty of chocolate eggs for dessert. We hiked back to our irrigation pond and heard a deafening number of chorus and wood frogs and saw two trumpeter swans swimming in the now open water. Janaki brought a pole along and we checked all the fields for frost. It might b...

    Pine Knot News|Apr 9, 2021

After selecting “The Nickel Boys” by Colson Whitehead as the 2021 One Book Northland title, the Cloquet Public Library is hosting three events this month. For younger readers (and the young at heart), the library will host a “story stroll” through Cloquet’s Veterans Park 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 10. Take a walk through Veterans Park in Cloquet and read “Last Stop on Market Street” by Matt de la Peña as you go. “Last Stop on Market Street” is a heartwarming picture book with themes of building community, intergenerational...

  • History Mystery

    Pine Knot News|Apr 2, 2021

As we find ourselves in the holiest part of the year, with Easter on Sunday, we were delighted to come across the story below from 1975. It involves an innovative turn on fundraising at Cloquet's Our Savior's Lutheran Church and Pastor Gilbert Lee. The story of encouraging parishioners to take money given by the church, invest it and gain a return for the church was novel enough to make the news across the country. Given the pandemic that we hope is on its last legs, this might be an idea worth...

  • More Easter coloring pages to come

    Pine Knot News|Apr 2, 2021

Wow. We received more than 40 festively colored entries in the Easter Coloring Contest in the past few weeks. Thank you to all who took part. As of presstime, we were still trying to figure out which nine will receive a treat from Premiere Theatres. All entrants will receive a coupon for Gordy's Hi-Hat and Minnesota Wilderness tickets. We are also trying to make room on our pages for all to see the works of art. Here are two that are high on our list, from Emma Skramstad, 9, right; and Colby...

  • Frozen Forester race brings in $2K for trails

    Pine Knot News|Mar 26, 2021

This year's annual Frozen Forester races at Pine Valley raised more than $2,000 to help with trail expansion and maintenance costs for the new bike trails at Cloquet's popular woodland park. Held on March 13, the unique race offered participants a choice between a 5.5K run/walk/snowshoe - as a family-friendly trails option - or a much more challenging off-trail run. They could also do a 15K fat tire bike ride on groomed trails, or go for both a bike and a run of their choice. Race turnout has...

I am still doing some subbing at Floodwood school and I want everyone to know how great the students are there. You can be very proud of your students, educators and the whole staff for doing a great job of educating kids and keeping everyone safe during these difficult times. Our sympathy to the family of David Alan Tveit, 68, of Floodwood who passed away unexpectedly on March 14 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth. In addition to working as a mechanic, David was a lifelong logger. Our sympathy t...

  • History Mystery

    Pine Knot News|Mar 19, 2021

Rich Winkler had a question for the Carlton County Historical Society about a possible ghost town along the original Lake Superior & Mississippi Rail Road line that ran along the St. Louis River in the county. But blank stares is what he gets since there is little to go on concerning what might have been the existence of a place called Milford. We sent Winkler a clipping we found from a January 1871 issue of the Superior Times related to the region's first rail line, up and running by 1870....

  • One Last Trip

    Pine Knot News|Mar 19, 2021

Bobbie Turner of Cloquet shared what she was doing a year ago as the Covid-19 pandemic bore down. "My daughter, Erin, and I visited Las Vegas on her spring break from Minnesota State University Mankato last March. While we were there, we got news that her school, as well as most colleges around the country, was closing down. It was the last normal week before the world changed, but there were far less people there than a normal time. Not long after this, Vegas shutdown."...

  • History Mystery

    Pine Knot News|Mar 5, 2021

The story about the closing of Wood City Lights & Hardware in the Pine Knot News a few weeks ago got us thinking about that nickname for Cloquet. It’s obvious why Wood City came to be, given the influence of the wood-related industry here. But when did Wood City gain traction as a nickname? If you can call it traction. The term is bandied about still today, but not as commonly as, say, the Big Apple, Big Easy, Charm City or Queen City. A cursory look at the newspapers.com archive, which has searchable newspapers dating back hundreds of years, s...
