  • Ice racers take to the river

    Mike Creger|Feb 26, 2021

It's always hit and miss when it comes to hosting motorcycle ice racing on the St. Louis River in Scanlon. But the mid-February cold snap allowed Jeff Berg to rally racers online for an event last Saturday, Feb. 20, near the River Inn. Berg has had three river runs since 2013. It all depends on the weather, he said, especially when it comes to the river. It's a chance for Berg to show off his Iceberg Tires products based out of Superior, where regular ice races take place as part of the Midwest...

  • Carlton Happenings

    Leola Rodd|Feb 26, 2021

At last, the cold has relaxed its grip and we are able to get outside. We can look forward to the first day of spring on March 20, and even further to the first day of summer on June 20. Don’t forget to move clocks forward an hour on March 14. Although the pandemic and cold weather has kept many of us home, the Carlton community, school and organizations are beginning to plan for some events. The All Night Grad Party committee is selling pasties through the Magnolia Café in Carlton. The ta...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Feb 26, 2021

We enjoyed a beautiful funeral service for Leo Dahlberg Feb. 20 at the Atkins Northland Funeral Home in Cloquet. Leo was well-known in Wright and the surrounding communities. His daughter Sharon Lake shared some thoughts at the funeral: “Most of you probably know my dad as Leo from Groth Lumber. … The thing I am most proud of about my dad is the way he spent his time in the nursing homes after his strokes. He was in Sunnyside in Cloquet for two years before he moved to his man cave at the Villa Vista in Cromwell. I called it that because he ins...

  • History Mystery

    Pine Knot News|Feb 19, 2021

This is a History Mystery that will likely never be solved, so we plan to have many installments regarding the topic: How did the name Cloquet come about? Some spotty history tells us that the town once known as Knife Falls, named for the jagged-rock rapids on the St. Louis River, became Cloquet upon incorporation. Most assume the city name came from the Cloquet River, a tributary to the St. Louis and major log-delivery artery that boosted Cloquet into prominence as a wood processing center....

  • Iceberg Classic set for Saturday

    Pine Knot News|Feb 19, 2021

The Carlton County Riders Club wasn’t too sad about the recent cold weather — it’s made the ice on the St. Louis River where they will hold their dirtbike races Saturday that much thicker. They call it The Iceberg Classic Under the Lights and it will be held, once again, on a giant oval on the river next to the River Inn Bar & Grill in Scanlon. Admission is free, races run from around 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20. According to the group’s Facebook page, classes include micro mini bikes, ABC bikes, vet bikes and a dash for cash. Jennie K. Hanson|Feb 19, 2021

The residents of the Villa Vista and Cardinal Court got their second Covid vaccine shots last week. Let’s hope this opens things up so the residents can receive more visitors soon. It’s been a long year without family and friends being able to visit them. Sympathy to the family of Leo Dahlberg, who passed away Feb. 13 at the Villa Vista in Cromwell. Find his obituary on Page 8 of this week’s paper. Condolences can be sent to his daughter, Sharon Lake, at P.O. Box 164, McGregor MN 55787 and t...

  • History Mystery

    Pine Knot News|Feb 12, 2021

No real mystery here this week. We received this cool photo in a packet of information about the Wood Conversion Company, including one of its newsletters from 1950. Using the old-car expert the Pine Knot News keeps on a retainer, we confirmed that this shot, most likely taken from the old water tower near Pinehurst park, was taken in the late 1940s or in 1950. Do you have a History Mystery? Send it to us a [email protected]...

  • Retiring firefighter gets a grand goodbye

    Jana Peterson|Feb 12, 2021

Sean Saddler went through a rollercoaster of emotions Thursday ... and then he went for a ride in a fire truck. Retirement is bittersweet, said the firefighter of 33 years. "This is my family and I'm gonna miss them," he said, gesturing at the gymnasium filled with upward of 30 people, most of them firefighters and emergency responders. "It's hard to leave the guys, it really is. I won't miss the job as much, since they've already told me the welcome mat will be out and I can come cook a meal...

  • Wrenshall News: Seeds need acute care

    Anne Dugan|Feb 12, 2021

Like many Americans this past Sunday, I celebrated the largest sporting event of the year by eating my fair share of avocado. I realized it might be a fun science project for my kids and me to watch the pits sprout in water. After just one day, the skins had already cracked. I have them sitting on my windowsill and we check to see the progress every morning. The word of the day in my mother's kindergarten class on Tuesday was "seed" so there have been a couple new additions to the windowsill: A...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|Feb 12, 2021

Cromwell mayor Sharon Zelazny asked me to pass along information about the Highway 210 project. The timeline for the project has changed. Testing in the area last fall revealed the need for some design changes. Instead of an early bid date, the project will be let in June since the secured project funding is for the 2021 fiscal year. Preliminary work is being done. The construction through town will start in the spring of 2022 with the goal of completing it in one season. Mayor Zelazny said...

  • History mystery

    Pine Knot News|Feb 5, 2021

Sharon Mattinen Goergen sure knew who the mystery angler was from last week. Kris Nelson, who has compiled a booklet on some of the history of Big Lake, used the photo for the cover but never knew who the person was or the story behind it. Sharon fills us in: "The young man in the photo is my brother, Bobby Mattinen, age 15, of Cloquet. Bobby loved to fish and often rode his bike from town out to Otter Creek (crick, as we called it) and to Big Lake to spend the day fishing. "Our family was...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|Feb 5, 2021

I recently found a painting my great uncle Dave Larson did of his wife back in the 1940s, but it has an opaque coating of some kind that has made the painting difficult to enjoy to its best. So, I was wondering if anyone knows of an art restorer in the area? This painting would be a much-improved family treasure if fully restored. It looks like he put a clear coating over it and as the years went on it became cloudy. Sure seems strange not having any football games on national TV this weekend....

  • History Mystery

    Pine Knot News|Jan 29, 2021

Kris Nelson compiled a booklet about the history of Big Lake in 1997. She's hoping someone can help identify the angler in this photo. "I did research at the library and found many interesting articles about Big Lake and included them along with stories of the people from around the lake. Somewhere I found this photo and thought it would be a great cover for the book. I have never been able to identify the person or even if it is on Big Lake. Would love if you could discover more about him."...
