  • Budget crunching begins in Carlton

    Mike Creger|Jan 21, 2022

The heavy lifting on cutting away the Carlton school district’s million-dollar budget hole will begin in meetings in February, but the school board on Tuesday showed signs that those cuts will sting — especially for those seeking activities outside the classroom. The board balked on accepting contracts for advisors to the school play and pep band. None of the four members present brought forth a motion on music teacher Sharrie Janovick and potential theater director Alyssa Olsen. It means there will be no school play and no pep band, which als...

It had been three weeks since he'd been at work, and K-9 Roman practically danced from the squad car to the back door of the Carlton County Law Enforcement Center Friday. Once inside, he got busy eating a generously sized dog treat, largely oblivious to the Carlton County officials preparing to honor the K-9 and his partner, patrol sergeant Tory Cawcutt, on the occasion of Roman's retirement. Roman had been having some health problems, so the department officially retired him on Jan. 1. Trained...

Like many school district officials across the region and state, Esko school board members adopted a policy this week requiring all district employees to either be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 or wear masks and test weekly. Board members did not have much of a decision on whether or not to adopt the policy on Monday, as it is proposed to be mandated through the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, meaning the district could be fined for not being in compliance. “To everyone listening, I wish I had something else to say b...

Before Monday, Wrenshall’s employee count was 101. The Minnesota School Boards Association has been prepping districts across the state to put policies in place...

In its Prologue section, under the heading of "Origins," Max Ufberg writes about the rise of snowboarding from a "goofy" pastime to an Olympics sport. Vern Wicklund, as the story goes, was messing around with modified sleds when he was a teenager in Cloquet, as early as 1917. In 1939, he and relatives Harvey and Gunnar Burgeson, all now living in the Chicago area, patented what is generally considered...
