    Jul 1, 2022

The July Fourth parade was the first domino to fall Monday in Cloquet. Later, after a chilly wet afternoon at Veterans Park, organizers elected to delay the movie in the park and fireworks until July 5. "It will be drier and warmer tomorrow, so people can enjoy both the evening events without feeling like they have hypothermia," said co-coordinator Ivan Hohnstadt after a day that never reached the 60 degree mark. The Northeastern Hotel, Saloon and Grille still plans to offer live music from 5-9... Full story

  • Supporters push for upgrade to Esko basketball courts

    Rebekah King|Jun 24, 2022

Dreams of new outdoor basketball courts in Esko could soon become a reality. According to Matt Berger, a former basketball coach, player and trainer, the outdoor courts in Esko have been well-loved by the community over the years. But now, summer basketball players find themselves wrapping a lot of skinned knees due to the uneven and cracked nature of the old courts. Berger told the Thomson Township board of supervisors at its meeting Thursday, June 16, about the crooked posts and worn-out hoops there. During the summer of 2021, Berger and...

    Mike Creger|Jun 24, 2022

South Terrace Elementary School in Carlton has a new principal. The school board on Monday approved the hiring of Donita Stepan, the former superintendent in Thief River Falls in northwestern Minnesota. She will replace Ben Midge, who resigned this spring to take a principal job in southern Minnesota. Midge had been the principal of the entire Carlton school district, covering the elementary through high school grades. Superintendent John Engstrom said a search for a replacement for Midge would be easier if the district posted a job for the ele...

  • State sprays for gypsy moths

    Jun 24, 2022

Any Cloquet residents awakened by the sound of a low-flying plane Wednesday morning can expect it to happen again within the next three to 12 days, according to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. The Wednesday morning flight was first of two aerial applications of a spray to help eradicate gypsy moth (now known as spongy moth) infestations detected in parts of Cloquet and Duluth last fall. The Cloquet site encompasses approximately 500 acres around the Sappi mill property, including the...

  • How hot was it Monday?

It was also hot enough to buckle pavement in the southbound lanes on Interstate 35 near Moose Lake, causing some traffic delays and an emergency fix by road crews (also pictured). There were several such weather-related incidents across the state, including in the northbound lanes of I-35 near Rush City. Official National Weather Service... Full story

  • Judge: Life sentences for Thompson

    Jana Peterson|Jun 17, 2022

Once the jury found him guilty, there was never any doubt that Sheldon Thompson would be sentenced to life in prison for brutally killing his pregnant girlfriend, Jackie Defoe, their unborn child, and Jackie's 20-month-old son, Kevin Lee Shabaiash Jr., in March 2020. How many life sentences he would be sentenced to was the question. The sentencing hearing Tuesday at the Carlton County Courthouse came just over two weeks after a jury found Thompson guilty of eight counts of murder on May 31.... Full story

  • Wrenshall: School Board leans toward inquiry

    Mike Creger|Jun 17, 2022

After more than 50 people showed up at its last meeting, the Wrenshall school board held its regular June meeting in the commons area of the school instead of the cramped library. A microphone was deployed so a similar-sized audience could hear what was being discussed Monday. But when it came time to talk about the current controversy consuming the board, the microphones went unused and the mumbled conversation that ensued was difficult to hear even on a playback of a recording. The Monday meeting began like many of the board’s meetings do the...

    Jana Peterson|Jun 17, 2022

When Sam and Julie Jacobson decided to run the Sawdust 5K with their boys on July Fourth last year, they had no idea they'd literally be running the race this year as its new organizers. But they love the annual Cloquet race, so when Sawdust founders Jeff and Alyson Leno said they needed to step down to spend more time with their kids, the Jacobsons stepped up. The couple complement each other as race organizers, as Julie has experience with fundraising and event organizing from past jobs with C... Full story

With the advent of the soon-to-be-built justice center, a Carlton County probation committee has been studying ways of managing the growth of the local jail population by “improving criminal justice operations … and reduce recidivism through improvement of existing supervision and treatment programs,” quoting the earlier Carlton County jail and justice system plannin...

  • Covid, inflation pressures impact school budget

    Jana Peterson|Jun 17, 2022

Not surprisingly, the Covid-19 pandemic impacted lives in a wide variety of ways. One aspect the pandemic has unexpectedly continued to affect is school finance, Cloquet superintendent Michael Cary told school board members Monday. While student numbers had been rising slowly but steadily before the pandemic, they have failed to rebound after students returned to in-person classes. Fewer students means less funding from the state of Minnesota. Additionally, inflation — blamed in part on supply shortages caused by the pandemic — is getting in...
