While it’s never an exact science when setting a budget nearly three months before students enter buildings for a new school year, the Cloquet school board approved numbers it was presented with at its regular meeting Monday night. The total operating cost for the 2021-2022 year was estimated at $38.7 million, slightly under proposed revenues. That leaves the district fund balance at $9.2 million, about $86,000 more than the previous budget year. The only eye-opener in the numbers is the projected $385,262 hit to the general fund balance. S...
Esko school board members approved a budget Monday for the next school year that superintendent Aaron Fischer referred to as somewhat “mythical.” That’s because the budget was created without knowledge of three critical indicators: how much the state is allocating to the school district, final results of contract negotiations with employees, and student count, which Fischer said they usually don’t know for certain until September. “We had to put in some assumptions because our legislato...

A fire Sunday morning at Larson Commons senior apartments in Cloquet left one woman with severe injuries and her apartment damaged. It also raised questions about what would happen in case of a bigger fire. According to the Cloquet Area Fire District, a call came in around 9:30 a.m. June 13 about a fire inside an apartment with a possible trapped victim. Upon arrival, fire crews forced entry into the apartment and found the residence full of smoke with zero visibility. Crews found and removed...
This weekend’s Grandma’s Marathon events will cause delays for traffic headed to Duluth and the North Shore. On Saturday an Interstate 35 and Highway 61 detour is in place in Duluth to accommodate the morning marathon. The traditional detour route through downtown is under construction this year. Adjustments to the detour required to avoid the construction are going to result in longer delays than normal. Those heading to Duluth over the weekend can expect long delays. Plan ahead and consider alternate routes or using navigation apps to avo...

There aren't too many requirements for the new high ropes course that opened Saturday in Scanlon: you simply have to be 8 years old or older, at least 35 pounds and not over 275 pounds. No experience is necessary. "It's like a pace-yourself kind of course, no need to race through it," said Cliff Langley, owner and operator of High Ropes Minnesota, a sister company of Swiftwater Adventures, which offers whitewater rafting on the St. Louis River. High Ropes is a five-pole course that features 12...
Attention, potential lifeguards: Preteens will soon be begging you to apply for a job at The Beach at Pinehurst Park this summer. That's because a staff shortage is requiring a major change in beach rules as it prepares to open Monday: All children age 12 and under will be required to wear a lifejacket while in the water. Cloquet Community Ed director Erin Bates said the rule "applies to all, whether or not they have had swim lessons in the past." If staffing levels ramp up, the rules may be...

Flushing will be done between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Customers in the immediate flushing area may temporarily experience rusty or dirty water. It is advisable for anyone washing clothes during the week to check their water prior to washing. If dirty water persists, contact the city engineer’s office at 218-879-6758. Sewer mains are also being cleaned and will continue through O...
The attorney for a Cloquet man facing both first- and second-degree murder charges will be asking the court to both dismiss the case and change the venue. In an online hearing held Wednesday, June 9, defense attorney Steve Bergeson, assistant state public defender and a member of the Public Defender Trial Team, asked Sixth District judge Jill Eichenwald for a month to submit his arguments for dismissal and a change of venue in writing. Eichenwald granted that request, and a request by prosecutor Erin Eldridge for another month in which to...
Hot on the heels of a months-long Cloquet debate, Carlton County is taking its turn to determine whether its own Project Labor Agreement (PLA) — dating back to 2013 — for county construction projects should be dropped or amended. The county’s PLA calls for public construction projects to be completed by workers that are members of a union. The Carlton County PLA only affects projects estimated to be bid for more than $175,000. Unlike Cloquet, the county PLA doesn’t apply to private construction, only publicly funded projects. All county...

Kathy Rahkola and other community members have been trying to revamp the garden, located behind the Thomson Town Hall. People are trying to create new opportunities at the community garden, Rahkola reported to the Thomson Township board of supervisors at its meeting on June 3. The pollinator garden will cover four garden plots and will need to be...
Imagine you have a child, whose life depends on getting a daily dose of medication that is available, but you can’t afford it. Just $1 a day could make a difference between life and a slow decline toward death. That’s a situation Dr. Emmanuel Mareus, aka “Doctor Manno,” sees too often at his medical center and mobile outreach clinics in Haiti. “Diabetes is not a disease that will kill you, like cancer,” he said. “And as a parent, you know that, but can’t afford this.” Mareus spoke in the dini...
