Some folks come to farming through family generations, finding themselves tilling the soil on acres cleared and planted by those whose DNA inhabits the cells in their bodies. Others arrive on the land through a much more circuitous route. Adam Kemp of Uff-Da Organics is one of these people. He began his farming career 12 years ago when he was hired at Northern Harvest Farm and discovered an affinity for working the land and growing healthy food. A music composition major at the University of...
Jana Peterson [email protected] Sometimes, to draw attention to a darker issue, it helps to bring a little honey too. That’s what Cloquet’s Starr Marshall — who works with senior citizens almost exclusively in her job with Reliable Insurance Agency — did by creating Senior Day in Cloquet. Running 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 15, at Veterans Park in Cloquet, Senior Day is a time to celebrate our senior citizens. This year Senior Day organizers will do that with music, prizes, free beverag...
The uproar at the Streetcar in Carlton late Friday afternoon was not sustained. There were those who specifically came to watch Sam Kavanaugh in the last game of the Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions final, like the family friends in the back room. There were those who were reminded by the venerable game show airing on all of the multiple televisions that a local kid was doing pretty good, again, on the quiz show. Some chanced into it and caught on, at the bar for food and drink in an early...
Thanks to Ward 2 councilor Sheila Lamb, the Cloquet city council's 4-3 vote to repeal the city's project labor agreement May 4 became a 4-3 vote to preserve it Tuesday evening. Lamb said she spent the last month studying the PLA issue, having conversations with people from the city of Duluth, local union members and examining lawsuits targeting the labor agreements around the country. "I think that PLAs protect the city on multiple levels and our citizens," Lamb said. "It was why I made my reque...

Oxygen levels are falling in freshwater lakes in Minnesota and across the globe — a trend likely driven by climate change and human development, a new study suggests. The findings could be a sign that trouble is ahead for Minnesota lakes that provide important habitat for coldwater fish species, and could have more harmful algal blooms in their future. The study, published Wednesday in the scientific journal Nature, was the first to look at temperature and oxygen changes across a large number of lakes across the globe. Its research team include... Sam Kavanaugh was watching himself on Jeopardy! Monday night and it felt foreign to him. While that can be expected for a show that was taped two months ago, it's Kavanaugh's whirlwind success in the game show's "Tournament of Champions" that has him grasping for details of his experience. He won Monday, placing him among the overall top three contestants in the final round airing Thursday and today to determine a champion. "It's bizarre," the 2009 Carlton High School graduate said Tuesday...
The Carlton County Transportation Department will be spraying herbicides on vegetation growing through the pavement of the St. Louis River bike/pedestrian trail from Minnesota Highway 210 east of the Four Seasons Sports Complex in Carlton north to the Park and Ride lot in Scanlon. They will also be spraying the ditches on county roads 27, 116, 117, 118, 119, 151, 152 and 696. In some areas the vegetation has caused severe pavement damage, making it difficult for people to use the trail. Vegetation management with selective herbicides controls...
It was a decision no grandparent should have to make. Phyllis Rousseau thought she was going to have to choose between attending the Carlton and Wrenshall graduation ceremonies — originally scheduled at the same time Friday — and how’s a grandmother supposed to choose between two grandsons who are both valedictorians of their classes? That’s right. Grandson Zeke Rousseau-Sheff is valedictorian for the Class of 2021 in Wrenshall, while grandson Spencer Rousseau is valedictorian for the Class o...

The Cloquet school board is whittling away at changing a new normal into just plain normal after an entire school year under the Covid-19 pandemic protocols. On Monday, board members agreed that masking mandates in district buildings would be lifted by the end of June, mirroring a loosening of protective measures sparked by state and national guidance as the threat of Covid-19 has ebbed. Superintendent Michael Cary said current recommendations call for masks to be worn in school buildings only during the school day. He said it would make sense...
Jana Peterson [email protected] To make up for learning lost during the pandemic, Esko schools have a plan to help students who are struggling catch up and stay on top of their learning without giving up their summer vacation. Esko School Board members unanimously approved two plans — one for secondary, one for elementary — for summer learning to help “bridge” the gap caused in part by distance learning over the past school year. At the elementary level, principal Brian Harker said teachers...
Barnum school officials are meeting with officials from the Moose Lake and Willow River districts to discuss schedules and busing changes for the next school year. “We are discussing the parts of the school bus routes that we can share,” Barnum superintendent Mike McNulty said. “Some of our routes are the other school districts. Some students from each of the school districts go to school in one of the other districts, so we are talking about how to keep bus routes from overlapping.” McNulty said the districts have also discussed startin...
When the City of Cloquet passed a proposed Project Labor Agreement into city code in May of 2017, the council chambers were standing room only, and packed with union members who spoke in favor of the PLA. Three years later, when councilors voted to overturn the PLA at their May 4 meeting, this time virtual, it was packed again. The city council will reopen its vote eliminating the PLA at its 6 p.m. meeting Tuesday, June 1, after Ward 2 Councilor Sheila Lamb motioned at the May 18 meeting to...
With County State Aid Highway 61 in rough shape between Scanlon and Esko, Carlton County officials would like to make some dramatic changes. A proposed project would transform the highway from a divided four-lane into a two-lane road with a center turn lane and a recreational multiuse trail along one side of the highway. County engineer JinYeene Neumann told the Thomson Township board of supervisors the current pavement on 61 is in desperate need of repair and the structure under the road is failing. When the county began discussion about...

At what was expected to be an uneventful hearing for a new countywide parking ordinance Monday, more than 20 people gave opinions, often straying from the details of the ordinance to complaints of trespassing, confrontation, and fear surrounding activities associated with Enbridge Line 3 pipeline protests. The Carlton County committee of the whole moved on the parking ordinance May 4 for consideration without discussion. The Monday hearing had plenty of it. In the end, the board passed the ordinance with little fanfare, compared to the hearing...
And just like that, 11,600 tree seedlings were scattered across Carlton County. The giant tree giveaway late last week was organized to honor the Pine Knot's status as the most outstanding weekly newspaper in the state and Sappi's many awards for being one of the most sustainable pulp and paper mills in the world. It was also a way of giving back to the world, as both companies need trees to keep their businesses going. With the help of Sappi, which paid for the seedlings, and Upper Lakes...
