  • Wrenshall news

    Elle Swanson|Nov 20, 2020

The City of Wrenshall is running a wellness challenge in an effort to get community members outside and moving. The idea was conceived in a brainstorming session with the new parks/community committee. Outgoing mayor Donna Mae Weiderman reports that the response has been positive. "It really is a way for people to get outside while social distancing yet still feel connected as a community." Pandemic restrictions have a definite impact on physical activity. Wrenshall community members responded...

    Pine Knot News|Nov 20, 2020

During the Nov. 17 meeting, Cloquet City Councilors approved adding a longer-than-usual list of delinquent city utility bills to the tax rolls for the listed properties. This allows residents a longer time to pay the bills without penalties, said finance director Nancy Klassen. Klassen also suggested people who are struggling to pay utility bills (as well as housing payments) because they were affected by the Covid-19 pandemic apply for assistance from the state. Fill out a pre-application here https://www.housinghelpmn.org/ or find out more...

  • History mystery not quite resolved

    Mike Creger|Nov 13, 2020

There’s good news and no news regarding the two History Mystery photos from last week. David Haugen submitted pictures of a fireplace sitting alone in a woods in Cloquet and a “gondola cable car” along the St. Louis River near Scanlon. There is nothing to report on the cable car, yet, but we’re working on it. There is plenty to report on the fireplace. Cloquet’s Julie Johanson provided a clue that unlocked a lot of history about the structure found in a slice of woods east of the playgroun...

  • Winter parking is in effect

    Nov 13, 2020

Judging by the number of cars parked on the street overnight for Tuesday’s winter storm, a number of residents didn’t get the message that winter parking is in effect now through March. That means overnight parking is not allowed. From November 1 through March 31, cars cannot be parked on the streets or in alleys, to allow snowplow drivers and others to clear the streets where winter parking is observed. In Esko, parking on the street is prohibited between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m., and in Carlton, from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. Cloquet doesn’t allow parki...

  • Don't plow snow into a right of way

    Pine Knot News|Nov 13, 2020

The Carlton County Transportation Department reminds everyone that the act of plowing snow onto or across a public roadway is a safety hazard and a violation of Minnesota Statute 160.27, subdivision 5, punishable as a misdemeanor. The likelihood of a traffic accident or damage to snowplow equipment resulting from a slippery area, frozen rut, bump or large bank on the shoulder is a major safety concern. Should an accident result from any of these situations, the property owner and the person who actually placed the snow on the roadway could be...

    Dan Reed|Nov 13, 2020

The Carlton county board made moves to end the county's participation in the Sentence to Serve program and hire a probation officer to be responsible for Intensive Pretrial Release at its meeting Monday, where commissioners Gary Peterson and Mark Thell were present with Dick Brenner, Tom Proulx, and chairman Marv Bodie participating virtually. A probation committee has been working for some months on an overview of the county probation program, as it affects the number of inmates in the Carlton County jail. County attorney Lauri Ketola shared...

  • CCHS roof work begins; fundraising continues

    Pine Knot News|Nov 13, 2020

A generous and anonymous benefactor is offering a dollar- for-dollar match for any donations to the Carlton County Historical Society roof fund. The match is good for donations up to $10,000 from Nov. 13 through Dec. 4, an ecstatic CCHS executive director ElizaBeth Lyle said Wednesday morning. "It's incredible news," Lyle said. CCHS has been fundraising for months to cover the costs of a much-needed new roof for the century old Shaw Memorial Library, longtime home to CCHS. The unusual weather...

  • Son dies in crash; mom is charged

    Jana Peterson|Nov 13, 2020

A 3-year-old boy died Sunday in Cloquet, the result of a crash that left a car split in half. The Cloquet police responded to the single- vehicle crash on the 1500 block of White Pine Trail at approximately 4:30 p.m. Sunday — they found a 2004 Chevy Impala on each side of the road. Reports indicate that the vehicle left the rural Cloquet roadway and struck a tree. Another child, a 5-year-old girl, was also in the car but was not seriously injured. Both children appeared to have been in car seats. The driver and mother of both children, Misty L...

  • Cloquet schools go distance, add 'asynchronous' day

    Jana Peterson|Nov 13, 2020

With the numbers of positive Covid-19 cases climbing rapidly, students in grades 7-12 started distance learning Tuesday and grades K-6 will make the switch next Monday, despite the fact that last week's numbers didn't meet the state benchmark for changing elementary school students to distance learning, a last resort. Superintendent Michael Cary told school board members he doesn't expect the schools to change back to hybrid or in-person learning anytime soon at Monday's meeting. "The numbers...

  • Cop makes plea deal on DUI charge

    Pine Knot News staff|Nov 13, 2020

Cloquet police officer Andrew Murray pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of driving while impaired at a hearing in district court last week. It means he will likely face probation and maybe a fine after an arrest three months ago. Murray represented himself in the case that stems from his arrest Aug. 6 after crashing his car in Carlton. Police officers had been tipped previously about someone driving erratically in the area at the time. Murray fled into the woods near the South Terrace school, where police eventually found him. Special prosec...

    Jamie Lund|Nov 13, 2020

There may not be any bakeries left in Cloquet, but that doesn't mean there aren't some fabulous bakers around. • History mystery: outdoor fireplace and gondola cable car

    Mike Creger|Nov 6, 2020

Reader David Haugen admits he’s lived in Cloquet for only 15 years, so may have missed an era of general knowledge about some physical structures in the area that have puzzled him for some time. He recently submitted two photos for History Mystery. One is a fireplace, without a structure around it, found in the woods just east of the playground at Hilltop Park in Cloquet. What gives? The other is what Haugen refers to as a “gondola cable car” apparatus on the St. Louis River, just south of wh...

  • Social media post investigated

    Nov 6, 2020

A potentially threatening social media post by a juvenile will likely not result in any kind of formal consequences, Cloquet Patrol Commander David O’Connor told the Pine Knot News Wednesday. The question arose after the police department posted Tuesday that the department was aware of a social media post that morning showing an individual “holding what appeared to be a handgun with a suggestive quote.” The post had been taken down by the individual already, but the police investigated, contacting the parents and learning that the pictu...

  • County, city meetings nixed

    Nov 6, 2020

Two local government meetings were canceled this week due to lack of agenda items. The Carlton County committee of the whole meeting set for Tuesday, Nov. 3 was canceled after a couple agenda items were pulled. “It is not unusual for one or two COW meetings to be canceled each year, and calling a public meeting with very little on the agenda did not make good sense in light of the pandemic,” county coordinator Dennis Genereau said. The county board meets for its next regular meeting at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10. The Cloquet city council mee...

Walz said he was grateful to be there, and happy to sit with Fond du Lac leaders to find out what’s going on and try to figure things out together. Fond du Lac Reservation Business Committee chairman Kevin Dupuis Sr. said they “will sit at the table with anybody.” “I think that’s where it starts, with that dialogue, to welcome people in and see where eve...

  • Pipeline staging area plan dropped; jail plans continue

    Dan Reed|Oct 30, 2020

It took 12 minutes for the Carlton County board of commissioners to meet Monday, Oct. 26. Chairman Marv Bodie chaired the meeting, which was livestreamed and attended virtually by commissioners Tom Proulx and Dick Brenner. A permit for the use of the Alex Omar land on the Bromfield Road in Atkinson Township for pipeline construction staging needed no board action, because the company withdrew its permit application after residents living near the proposed staging area voiced concerns at the board’s Oct. 13 meeting. The negative neighborhood f...

  • Time goes back this weekend

    Pine Knot News|Oct 30, 2020

It’s that time of year again … time to “fall back” and change the clocks. Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1. On Saturday night, set your clocks back one hour before you go to bed … or, if your world runs on cell phones and computer time, don’t do anything....

    Pine Knot News|Oct 30, 2020

Winter parking begins for at least three cities next week, meaning overnight parking is not allowed. In Esko, it’s prohibited between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m., and, in Carlton, the hours are 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. Cloquet doesn’t allow parking on the street between midnight and 6 a.m....

  • Some in-person learning better than none, superintendent says

    Jana Peterson|Oct 30, 2020

Since secondary grades in Cloquet switched to hybrid learning — attending classes in person every third day and distance learning the rest — the schools have seen an uptick in the number of students switching to distance learning. That’s a concern, superintendent Micheal Cary told school board members in Monday’s regular board meeting. “When kids transition to full distance learning, even though we’re doing a good job, we do tend to see poorer results,” Cary said. “As an educator, I would really urge families, it’s important to keep your chil...

    Jana Peterson|Oct 30, 2020

A grand jury indicted a Scanlon man last week with three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct “with heinous elements” and a charge of kidnapping. If convicted, the first three charges all carry a life sentence without possibility of release. Dennis Michael St. John Jr., 53, was arrested in July, after being accused of holding a woman against her will and raping her repeatedly, forcing drugs on her and threatening to kill her. According to the complaint, the alleged victim ran into St. John at the Black Bear Casino Resort on Fri...

Visitors can walk through the park and pose for selfies, then vote for their favorite creation. Votes are due to City Hall by Nov. 3, with a winner announced on Nov. 4. Wrenshall school is...
