The Carlton County board of commissioners recently approved and presented a $4,000 grant from CARES Act funds to go to the B&B Market food train, which has been chugging along since late last March. During that time, individuals and businesses from all over Carlton County and even further away have donated money, products, anything to help out folks who are struggling during the pandemic, and B&B owners John and Kim Lind have used the donations to give away free food for anyone in need during the pandemic. In June of 2020, we turned off County Road 6, just east of Barnum, and onto the gravel driveway at the Johnson family farm. It may be our new home, but it will always be the Johnson farm. A public safety alert went out to cell phones across Carlton County after 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, alerting people to avoid the area near Cary and Enger Roads to Mission Road. According to a press release, just before noon Friday, Fond Du Lac police responded to protest activity blocking Ditchbank Road. As people were dispersing from the area at 12:40 p.m., Carlton County 911 Dispatch received a call that three people had thrown suspicious packages out and left the area. In the afternoon hours of Friday, Feb. 19, bomb squad personnel responded to a suspicious device on the 3200 block of Ditchbank Road in Perch Lake Township. After careful examination, it was determined that the device was not an explosive agent. During the incident, 40 residences were evacuated within a half-mile radius of the device. A temporary shelter was set up and available for the people that were evacuated. Law Enforcement transported anyone that needed a ride. Esko schools plan to expand a tutoring program for students who fell behind during distance learning, after a pilot program led by high school principal Greg Hexum showed good results. Thanks to the cold snap, the Cloquet School District started winter busing for those students who are not eligible to ride regular buses because they live too close to a school. These routes started this week — both morning and afternoon — and will end at the district’s discretion sometime in the spring. Unlike last year, there is not a separate bus for the winter route. The Floy Gilman Scheidler Scholarship Foundation provides scholarships to residents of Carlton County who are pursuing a post high school education. A former Carlton teacher and girls basketball coach was sentenced Friday to 33 months in Minnesota state prison for criminal sexual conduct charges stemming from a sexual relationship with a student athlete nearly 20 years ago. Robert Kent Pioro, 63, pleaded guilty and was sentenced for four counts of felony third-degree criminal sexual conduct for engaging in sexual penetration with a person who was 16 years old when he was in a position of authority over the victim. The city of Moose Lake lost power to homes and businesses on Monday during subzero temperatures. According to information released by city officials, there was an explosion in a regulator at the north substation at 7:20 p.m. The Moose Lake police and fire departments responded. “The fire was almost out when we got there,” said Moose Lake fire chief Jim Michalski.
