  • County board member will run to keep seat

    Dan Reed|May 8, 2020

Two-term Carlton County board commissioner Gary Peterson announced this week that he will seek re-election this fall. He made the announcement at the board’s committee of the whole meeting on Monday. Filing opens on May 19 with the Carlton County Auditor. Peterson is the commissioner for District 5, which includes Moose Lake, Kettle River, Cromwell and Wright. Peterson admitted it is a hard time to campaign for political office. Parades, festivals, prominent holidays, and door-to-door talks with the public are almost impossible with social d...

  • Story train chugs along

    Jana Peterson|May 8, 2020

Cloquet librarian Keiko Satomi said she was reading about the food train at B&B Market in Cloquet, along with stories about community members reading to kids online, when it occurred to her: Why not do a "Story Train by community helpers" online during the stay-at-home order? Satomi sent out a batch of emails and people obliged: already she has stories read by a doctor, a teacher, a farmer and a firefighter with more to come. The videos are posted on the library's new YouTube channel, along...

  • On The Mark: Food shelf volunteers fill new gaps

    Ann Markusen|May 8, 2020

As increasing numbers of our neighbors are laid off or staying home with children, they find it harder to make ends meet. Nonprofits such as the Tri-Community Food Shelf are helping mightily to compensate. Year-round, on Friday afternoons from 3 to 5:30 p.m., the food shelf, serving Wright, Tamarack and Cromwell, offers boxes of food for all who come to their quarters on the northeast corner of highways 210 and 73. The organization was started by the late Art and Bea Jauss of Tamarack and...

  • With pandemic, what's old is new again ... sort of

    Dan Reed|May 8, 2020

Saturday night sauna visits with Great-Uncle Krigsholm and the Reed and Koivisto grandparents included tales of past epidemics that killed family members or neighbors. Average life expectancy in 1918 wasn’t much past age 50. People who died in their 70s or 80s were few and far between — 50 was old age and 80 was ancient. I wrote for the Barnum Herald while I was in high school in Barnum and at the University of Minnesota Duluth. I scoured back issues and wrote a weekly column entitled “The Good Old Days.” It noted events and interes...

  • Boy Scouts stay busy virtually

    Pine Knot News|May 8, 2020

The Scouts from Cloquet’s Troop 171 have been busy with distant learning activities during the ongoing health emergency. Scoutmaster Kevin McGrath says they have been holding weekly virtual troop meetings on Friday nights, which have kept Scouts engaged and linked to one another. Scouts have taken part in a letter writing project for residents at Evergreen Knoll. Each Scout wrote a letter introducing himself, explaining what he is doing during “Stay at Home” measures and asking how the resident is coping. The Scouts have received grate...

  • Community notes: Property taxes due May 15

    Pine Knot News|May 8, 2020

Property taxes are due May 15, and the fact that the courthouse is open by appointment only means people should probably plan how they will pay, rather than racing to county auditor’s office at the last possible minute only to discover that in-person payments are not being accepted at this time. According to Acting Auditor/Treasurer Kathy Kortuem, people can pay via the following methods: • Mail a check, cashier’s check, or money order to Carlton County Treasurer, PO Box 160, Carlton, MN 55718 • Pay by e-check, debit card, or credit card ei...

  • Wrenshall News: Right now, outdoor spaces make for ideal classroom

    Anne Dugan|May 8, 2020

I recently ran across a quote from the writer and thinker Bell Hooks talking about the possibilities a classroom environment offers students: "The academy is not paradise. But learning is a place where paradise can be created." In her book "Teaching to Transgress" she continues: "The classroom, with all its limitations, remains a location of possibility." There has been a lot written about what impact the loss of a deliberate space for learning might mean for students. I teach at the college lev...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|May 8, 2020

Even if our schools are closed, there is some school news to report, as we congratulate Emaleigh Olesiak, who competed in the Minnesota Academy of Science state fair held virtually in March. This was Emaleigh’s first state event, and she won a Silver Award for her project “Air Air Everywhere,” for excellence in STEM research. We also congratulate Katelynne Schatz for being named Employee of the Year at the College of St. Scholastica and also the top student employee of the year in the state...

  • Carlton news

    Leola Rodd|May 8, 2020

Happy Mother’s Day. During this time of social distancing, let us take time to honor moms and to show our appreciation for their continued love and support on Sunday. The first Mother’s Day in the United States was celebrated on May 12, 1908, at the Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church to honor Anna Jarvis’ mother. Mother’s Day can actually be traced back to the 17th century in England. Mothering Sunday was the fourth Sunday of Lent, and was a special day when rules about fasting and penance...

  • State to students: Stay home

    Jana Peterson|May 1, 2020

The announcement by Minnesota governor Tim Walz that distance learning would be extended for the rest of the school year was a gut punch to many area students. It hit seniors particularly hard. Members of the Class of 2020 who were hoping they'd spend the last few weeks of school with their classmates will continue to learn from home, mostly online, and see the majority of their friends only through various social media platforms and video classroom meetings. News that all spring high school spo...

  • Stimulus payments continue roll out

    Pine Knot News|May 1, 2020

COVID-19 stimulus checks are automatic for people who receive Social Security retirement, survivor or disability, and Supplemental Security Income. People who receive Railroad Retirement benefits and Veterans Affairs beneficiaries who didn’t file a tax return in the last two years will also get automatic payments. Social Security recipients may have started seeing payments by April 29, according to the IRS. SSI and Veterans Affairs benefit recipients who don’t file a tax return and have dependent children need to act by May 5 to claim the $500-...

  • Minnesota still has Census filings to do

    Pine Knot News|May 1, 2020

The U.S. Census Bureau is beginning to send reminder notice postcards to an estimated 69 million households that have not yet responded to the 2020 Census. About 53.4 percent of households across the country have already responded since invitations began arriving in mailboxes on March 12. Those households that have not yet responded to the census will receive an in-person visit by a census taker to collect their information later this summer. Minnesota has the highest response rate, at 64 percent, followed by Iowa with 61.2 percent. Wisconsin,...

  • Cloquet July Fourth still up in the air

    Jana Peterson|May 1, 2020

While Gov. Tim Walz says his stay-at-home order has worked to buy the state more time to prepare for increasing cases of COVID-19 and better testing, that extra time also means that the state's expected peak of infections will likely occur mid-summer. Which is exactly when small and large communities across the state are busy celebrating July Fourth. Or maybe not. In Carlton County, Moose Lake city councilors elected to postpone their July Fourth festivities, and Agate Days event organizers...

  • Cloquet school board makes cuts to avoid $1 million deficit

    Jana Peterson|May 1, 2020

With the Cloquet School District looking at a possible $1 million deficit (out of a $30 million operating budget) during the 2020-21 school year, the pressure to approve a number of planned cuts was high during Monday’s school board meeting. The board approved close to $700,000 in cuts at the meeting. Superintendent Michael Cary said the district tends to leave about $300,000 in deficit spending on the table almost every year, which usually disappears due to increases in student numbers t...

  • Sheriff's office looks for feedback on camera purchase

    Pine Knot News|May 1, 2020

The Carlton County Sheriff’s Office is planning to implement a system of portable recording devices, also known as body-worn cameras, for deputies who are licensed peace officers. Under state statute, before a local law enforcement agency purchases or implements a portable recording system, it must first provide an opportunity for public comment by mail, electronically, and at a regularly scheduled meeting of the governing body with jurisdiction over the budget. There will be an open forum at the Carlton County board meeting starting at 8:30 a...

  • On the Mark: Small businesses try to stay upbeat

    Ann Markusen|May 1, 2020

Tracey Goranson's "Hair It Is!" is the longest-living commercial business on Cromwell's Main Street. Tracey offers haircuts, perms, color, eyebrow waxing and a tanning booth to men, women and children of all ages. She's built a loyal clientele of locals and cabin people. It's a wonderful career for Tracey, who loves working a mile from home and being her own boss. Once "stay at home" restrictions began, the Minnesota Board of Cosmetology sent Tracey updates, including the notice to close...

  • Wrenshall News: Personable teacher learns the online ropes

    Anne Dugan|May 1, 2020

Last week, Gov. Tim Walz announced that schools will continue distance learning through the end of the school year. I wouldn’t normally use this column to air petty annoyances but I’ve noticed some terminology that I want to address. Schools are not “closed” for the year. While the physical buildings are inaccessible, the administrators, teachers, and students are working really hard to figure out how to make distance learning work as best it can. Parents and caregivers are putting in a lot of...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|May 1, 2020

It’s now the sixth week of the “stay at home” order by our Minnesota governor and we are trying to do our best to follow this directive. And now we hear that the schools will not resume this year at all. All I can say is I feel for the students, staff and especially the parents as they go through these trying times. Our senior class will miss their spring sports events, awards banquet, the prom, their class trip and even a graduation ceremony unless some alternative plans can be made soon....

  • Guest Commentary: Distance learning can't bridge interpersonal gap

    Pine Knot News|May 1, 2020

A few days before Gov. Walz's decision to keep Minnesota schools closed through the end of the year, I ran out to Wrenshall School to scan materials for my classes. The only person in the building, I walked the hallways and looked into several empty classrooms - desks, books, decorations, teaching materials, all packed away. The senior hallway that had only weeks before bustled with noisy students and slamming lockers now stood silent, locks removed and lockers cleaned out. Although it was...

  • Seniors ache for a few moments more: Class of 2020

    Pine Knot News|May 1, 2020

The Pine Knot News contacted seniors in Cloquet, Esko, Wrenshall and Carlton this past week after they learned the state extended its order to keep students out of schools through the final month of the school year to guard against the spread of COVID-19. Cloquet senior Caleb Swanson, a writer for the Pine Knot News, collected most of the following comments from seniors, including his own. Cloquet Caleb Swanson High school is a funny thing. We get there, we learn, we grow, and we get attached...
