    Pine Knot News|Dec 27, 2019

As noted in the most recent issue of the Lumberlog by Cloquet Community Education, the Cloquet parks commission voted earlier this year to close the hills at Pine Valley to tubing “due to safety considerations and an aging tow rope system.” Pine Valley will continue to be home base for Cloquet kids’ ski jumping and Nordic skiing, as well as the CEC Nordic ski team. If you love tubing, visit Mont du Lac Resort’s brand-new Outta Bounds tubing park, which includes four speed lanes, two children’s lanes, and two custom lanes that careen through t...

  • County lowers levy increase to 2.9 percent

    Dan Reed|Dec 27, 2019

At its final meeting of 2019, the Carlton County Board of Commissioners set the property tax levy increase at 2.9 percent, shaving 1 percent from the preliminary levy set in September. This is the smallest increase in the levy for many budget cycles. “I am pleased that we came in at that figure,” board chairman Dick Brenner said. “A 2.2 precent wage increase for county employees this coming year, rising insurance costs and added staff in the sheriff’s office for state-mandated jail coverage all put pressure on the new 2020 budget.” The vote...

  • Esko keeps plugging along on future plans

    Jana Peterson|Dec 27, 2019

With five chapters written (but not in stone), the process of creating the new “2040 Comprehensive Plan” for Thomson Township is nearing completion but there’s still time to give feedback on the future vision for the township. Comp plan steering committee and planning commission members along with Township supervisors met with MSA planning consultants Dec. 10 to discuss the latest draft of the plan, which outlines the community’s goals and objectives for future land use in the nearly 40 square miles of land that make up the mostly rural t...

  • Federal smoking age to rise

    Pine Knot News|Dec 27, 2019

On Friday, President Donald Trump signed a $1.4 trillion spending package that included a measure to raise the age for buying tobacco from 18 to 21. The tobacco provision makes it a violation of federal law to sell tobacco to anyone under 21, and applies to all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and vaping cartridges. The law is not immediate; it will go into effect in the summer of 2020 across the country. According to Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, 19 states had already raised the legal age to buy tobacco products to 21. Youth tobacco...

  • Finn news

    Kim Samuelson|Dec 27, 2019

As I write these words, the year 2019 is almost completed. Another year come and gone, another chapter in history lived, experienced, recorded. Since there is not much happening in January, the coldest month of the year for us in the Northland, I don’t have much to share about Finn events so I figured I would bring you something to think about, to contemplate on during these wintery days ahead. As I look back on this past year, I think to myself, “What did I learn? What have I done? What am I leaving for future generations?” I’ve been applyin...

  • City plans methodical arena fixes until money for major overhaul

    Jana Peterson|Dec 20, 2019

One step at a time. That's the approach one consulting firm is recommending for repairs and renovations to the city's ice arenas, in particular The Barn. After spending close to $50,000 in October to replace the R-22 refrigerant that had leaked out of the aging pipes and ice plant at the more-than-40-year-old facility, determining options for fixing and replacing the cooling systems at both facilities has become a priority for the city. It's more complicated than systems simply getting old....

  • School boards set disparate levies

    Mike Creger|Dec 20, 2019

The Wrenshall school board certified its 2020 levy Monday night that shows a 43-percent increase in taxes for residents of the district. While that is a huge jump, it wasn’t unexpected as the board this fall approved a nonvoter-approved $9.3 million bonding project that will cost taxpayers more than $400,000 a year for 20 years. The bonding will improve air quality at the school. If there hadn’t been bonding, the tax increase for next year would have been about 6 percent. There were a few people at the Truth-In-Taxation meeting that took place...

    Pine Knot News|Dec 20, 2019

In response to concerns from parents of students who would normally walk to school this year, the Cloquet School District is trying a “winter-only bus route” to pick up Washington Elementary, middle school and high school students who live too close to school to qualify for busing. The bus route started Monday, just in time for a cold snap that sent temperatures to -15 degrees Wednesday morning. Superintendent Michael Cary said he has not heard any numbers yet, as the service just started, but explained that the district sent the inf...

On Tuesday night, they passed the same request - 26 H&K VP9 handguns - but this time the cost of the guns was significantly lower, at $12,974, a reduction from $688 per gun to $499. It was, however, still a more expensive bid than the second gun considered by the department, the Glock 19 (9mm)...

  • Wrenshall News: Outdoors awaits during holidays

    Anne Dugan|Dec 20, 2019

As I was mailing a package from the Duluth post office this week, the woman behind the counter noticed my address. "Wrenshall has the best burgers around, hands down!" she said. "I worked at that post office for a while and I would run across the street for Brickyard almost every day, although I had to start cutting back to once a week." I wholeheartedly agreed with her and promptly ordered takeout for my family that afternoon. A reminder that you can get your burgers and breakfast this...

  • The Green Guy: Getting a green message to students

    Chris Gass|Dec 20, 2019

In offering workshops and programs at Cloquet Library, the Carlton County Soil and Water Conservation District seeks to better connect with residents with the goal of building up an understanding of all the conservation possibilities and growing community knowledge. This is mostly a new avenue for us. We do host events through the year, like watershed tours or Walk in the Woods, but they vary and typically are specific to grants or a project. These are great, but have limited scope. And...

  • Wright/Cromwell News

This may be my last news column for a couple of weeks, as I had a total knee replacement scheduled for Dec. 16 at Cloquet Memorial Hospital. I do hope to be well enough to get back home to my computer to do the news, but who knows? Our sympathies to the family of Philip Lippo, 78, of Cromwell, who passed away in his home Friday, Dec. 13, 2019 with family at his side. A memorial service was scheduled for Dec. 19. Phil’s obituary appears in today’s edition of the Pine Knot News. Our sym...

  • County will have to wait out consolidation

    Mike Creger|Dec 13, 2019

The Carlton county board will join a list of those waiting on decisions regarding consolidation between the Wrenshall and Carlton school districts. The Carlton school board has been drafting a letter to the county regarding the possible sale of its high school property, which sits next to the county jail. The county board approached the district with the idea of using school property to build a new jail. It told the district earlier this year that it wanted an answer about the availability of the school land by next week. That won’t happen. T...
