Instead of ending the 2018 fiscal year $800,000 in the hole, the district instead had an overage of $450 in its general fund. Including restricted funds such as transportation and facilities maintenance, however, the district actually ended the year with a $448,617 increase to its fund balance. Most of the increase was...

  • The 'Haunted' show goes on

    Jana Peterson|Oct 25, 2019

Not many nonprofit organizations would boast about making people pee their pants. Then again, the folks at the Haunted Shack are not your typical community volunteers - they're in the business of scaring people. If someone gets so frightened they lose control of their bladder, well, consider it mission accomplished. But they're not monsters (although they may look that way with their makeup and costumes on). "I do enjoy scaring people," said volunteer Jeremy Dixon, who lurks in the corn maze....

  • Art meets the realities of life

    Jana Peterson|Oct 25, 2019

In a bit of fortuitous timing, the Fond du Lac Head Start building got the gift of communal art right after it was the center of a dramatic shooting incident last week. Artist Karen Savage-Blue had been painting the mural on parachute cloth in her studio on Big Lake for three months. She'd been working to get a grant (from the McKnight Foundation) and approval from the Fond du Lac tribal council for months before that. Looking at the weather forecast, she knew the mural needed to go up this...

On Monday, it was performed in the Wrenshall School commons for a raucous crowd of grade-schoolers by Little Opera of the North, presented by Lyric Opera of the North’s Little Loon program. “This was totally different from the movie,” exclaimed one awestruck student after the performance. “There was real magic … and the prince actually sang in thi...

  • Council to interview city administrator candidates

    Pete Radosevich|Oct 18, 2019

Tuesday’s Cloquet City Council meeting marked the move of the “public comment” portion to the beginning — rather than the end — of the meeting. The council changed the process to allow public input on issues before voting, rather than after. The city installed a digital timer to keep comments under 3 minutes, and some rules about the mayor’s authority to limit comments, if necessary, were read. The new system did not get a trial, though, as no citizens were present to make comments at the meeting. The city got good news on the search for...

  • ON HEALTH: Thank you, caregivers

    Ken Ripp MD|Oct 18, 2019

During another busy day in the clinic, as I see an elderly patient in a wheelchair who is accompanied by family member or members, I am reminded at how lucky the patient is. It is estimated that 80 percent of the adults who require some level of care live at home. Unpaid family members provide 90 percent of that care. This means that the majority of the care of the elderly is falling on the shoulders of family members. A caregiver is defined as a family member or friend who is providing unpaid...
