The Wrenshall school board will vote later this month on another loan to support cash flow during a period of time in the new year when district funds will be at their lowest. Speaking at Tuesday’s work session of the board, superintendent Jeff Pesta compared the $300,000 loan to last year, when the board approved a $500,000 loan. “This is truly our safety net,” Pesta said, later telling the Pine Knot, “in my recommendation to the board, I’m reasoning that the cost of borrowing $300,000 is worth it to eliminate the small risk of coming up...

The federal government is taking a cut from most of the Minnesota tax rebates sent out this fall, meaning a $26 to $286 handover depending on the size of a household’s initial payout. The Minnesota Department of Revenue failed to convince the IRS to treat the rebate as it had the tax-free pandemic-era checks delivered by other states. The rebates were $260 per person subject to income caps, with a qualifying household eligible for up to $1,300 if a couple had three or more dependents. It all means that $100 million or more of the $1 billion o...

One local business owner spoke during the Truth in Taxation hearing that preceded the vote. Jim Kuklis, who owns Trails Edge subdivision - consisting of two-family townhomes available for rent by residents over the age of 55...

They liked its unique nature, which is something, considering that the state flag design entered by Cloquet artist Sarah Agaton Howes was one of 2,600 entries reviewed by the State Emblem Redesign Commission this fall as it winnows down to a final new Minnesota flag and seal by year's end. The commission deliberated for hours on Nov. 21 and voted in six flag designs and five seal entries. Agaton Howes' flag, based on Native loom and bead work, features a geometric yellow North Star and...

He was also charged with misdemeanor fifth-degree a...
The issue of using outside social workers received a second vote in a month at Monday's Carlton County board meeting, where one commissioner continued to vote "no." Commissioner Tom Proulx was the lone dissenting vote in the board's 4-1 approval to use case management services from TLC of Duluth to help address a surge in cases involving people on elderly and disability waivers. Unlike at the meeting Nov. 14, when Proulx conducted an in-depth inquiry of county staff and administration and told...
Thirty-two homesteads in Progress Township are set to receive notice by mail of a pending Carlton County board vote regarding an elk reintroduction pen proposed to be located there. Saying they wanted to collect public input by those most closely affected, county commissioners unanimously tabled a vote Monday that would have addressed the pen. Instead, commissioners agreed to alert residents of the possibility and give them time to appear at the next board meeting, 4 p.m. Dec. 12 at the Carlton County Transportation Building. “I just want the p...
The Pine Knot News observed its fifth anniversary at the end of October rather quietly, because staff members at the independent locally owned newspaper were busy working. From humble beginnings in October of 2018 when its five owners mailed free copies across northern Carlton County, the Pine Knot News has grown to become the dominant newspaper in northern Carlton County. From the start, the goal was to cover local news, sports, issues, faces and events across Carlton County as comprehensively...
Expect lots of shoppers in downtown Cloquet Saturday, as a growing number of businesses are actively participating in Small Business Saturday. In part, that's because the number of businesses across Cloquet is growing, shifting, or under new ownership. But it's also due to a change in attitude among shoppers and business owners, said Holly Hansen, community development director for the city of Cloquet. "People want to support their town," Hansen said. "The last couple of years, people have been...
The group of 16 Wrenshall students quickly separated into small groups outside the Carlton VFW last week, as they hammered and cut the final pieces of the walk-in cooler they'd been building since September. Carter Woodall climbed a ladder to hammer nails into the fascia above, while Tyler Scott held the ladder to make sure his classmate didn't fall. Another group added trim - a job they had to start over - while others took turns drilling, sawing and hammering elsewhere on the tan and sage...

A small pocket of Cloquet homeowners and Diamond Willow Assisted Living residents can rest easier now, knowing the Cloquet City council voted against rezoning nearby property from residential to highway/commercial. Councilors voted 5-1 Tuesday to deny a request by local business owner Ken Maki to change the city’s comprehensive plan as well as rezone residential property in order to allow him to construct a large building — to hold two dump trucks and a shop for his business — on land next to his home. Maki had been running his trucks from his...
Cloquet schools superintendent Dr. Michael Cary had an interesting observation he wanted to share with the school board during last week’s meeting. As the board prepared to hear about the annual audit of its finances at the Nov. 13 meeting, Cary offered a warning about the cyclical nature of school enrollment that can make budgeting a tricky business. Right now, the district is enjoying very large class sizes at the high school. Older students garner more money per pupil in state funding, so the district is realizing some fatter times than o...

Other than that, there were few changes in the new contract with the Carlton Education Association, the union which represents teachers in the district, according to board chair Julianne Emerson. “The things that we really wanted to do is to raise salaries and raise the entry level salary,” Emerson sai...

Effective Jan. 1, 2024, the rate hike will add between $50 and $100 to an ambulance bill, depending on the level of care needed. CAFD chief Jesse Buhs said the increase will place CAFD in the median...

A criminal complaint filed by the Cloquet Police Department alleges Thrun had repeatedly blamed the 5-year-old for injuries inflicted on the younger child. Thrun faces additional misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor charges of domestic assault and c...
