  • BREAKING NEWS: Election Day incident under investigation locally

    Jana Peterson|Nov 1, 2024

While some places in the country received bomb threats on Election Day, Carlton County was relatively incident free - with one major exception. "A suspicious envelope was left at a polling booth in Thomson Township," said Carlton County Sheriff's Office Lt. Doug Rotta, noting that the call came at 5:28 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, while voting was still underway. The discovery did not disrupt voting at Thomson Township, Rotta said. People just continued voting as usual. "It didn't turn out to be...

    Mike Creger|Nov 8, 2024

A card arrived at the Cloquet post office as war loomed in the early 1940s. It was asking postmasters from across the country to consider signing up for military service. Clarence Scheibe was 40 years old. "He said, 'Oh well,' and signed it," his daughter Maggie Scheibe said this fall. It was just a few weeks after the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center in Superior announced its latest exhibit, "Post Office in the Pacific," featuring Scheibe and his work in the Army in keeping the flow...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|Nov 8, 2024

Bethlehem and Bethany Lutheran churches observed All Saints Day with a candle lighting ceremony on Sunday, Nov. 3. Remembered were Donald Hutar, Kim Peters Creager, Dagny Quarnstrom, Harriet Reno, Jon Swenson, Duane Schafer, Judy Rosicky and Joann Beck. May they rest in peace. Halloween is over, and I was surprised to get 37 trick-or-treaters at my new home in Cromwell. I was prepared for about 25, so had to improvise on the last few kids, but they all went away happy. Anyway, it was fun to see...

  • Lead in pipes is precautionary tale

    Jana Peterson|Nov 1, 2024

The ripple effects of Flint, Michigan — where a change of water supply caused water pipes to corrode and leach lead into the drinking water — are still expanding almost 10 years later, thanks in large part to a federal campaign to ensure clean drinking water everywhere. Cloquet is not Flint, but changing laws and standards around drinking water led to a mailing from the city of Cloquet to 2,100 residents last week about water lines and the potential for lead. Noting that the letters caused some alarm and lots of questions, public works dir...

  • Marijuana being added to smoking ban

    Brady Slater|Nov 1, 2024

The thought of objection to a marijuana smoking prohibition in public places evaporated like a puff of smoke at the Carlton County board this week. Unlike when restaurants and businesses went smoke-free in 2007, and bars followed in 2015, there was no great debate or consternation when the topic of public vaping and marijuana smoking cessation surfaced during a public hearing of the county board on Monday. The public hearing to change Carlton County’s smoke-free ordinance to reflect legalized adult marijuana use came and went without public c...
