  • Debate flares over outside contracts

    Brady Slater|Nov 17, 2023

A Carlton County board meeting flared hot Tuesday, when commissioner Tom Proulx and county staff squared off over the use of contracted social work. Despite a 4-1 vote affirming the use of contracted social workers to address a surge in disability services and long-term elder care cases, the preceding debate stirred tensions at a time of union contract negotiations. Proulx first squared off with public health and human services director David Lee over the issue. “What would happen if we said no?” asked Proulx. “I would have to come back and a...

    Jana Peterson|Nov 17, 2023

With 1,284 students this year, Esko schools may be at its highest K-12 enrollment ever, superintendent Aaron Fischer told school board members Monday. "That's a lot of students, more than we projected," Fischer said. "And they all fit into our current class size targets and programming and elective schedules, so we had no more expenditures to bring those in." That's 25 more students than last school year; each one brings more dollars for the school district from the state, which funds schools...

  • Poirier, Leonzal win school board elections

    Pine Knot News|Nov 10, 2023

Although Election Day saw many highly competitive and issues-based elections around the country, along with a change of mayor in Duluth, Carlton County had just two school board races on the ballot. Both races — one in Carlton, one in Barnum — were to fill a vacant seat. In Barnum, Patrick Poirier won by a 61-percent margin, with 102 votes to Tony Newman’s 64. Poirier will fill the one year remaining in the term, until the 2024 election. It isn’t new ground for Poirier, who once served on the Barnum school board for 12 years. He was appoint...

    Jana Peterson|Nov 10, 2023

Jana Peterson [email protected] A Cloquet man convicted of murdering his pregnant girlfriend and her toddler is appealing that conviction to the Minnesota Supreme Court, on the grounds of prosecutorial misconduct, claiming the prosecutor created a scenario in her closing arguments that wasn’t supported by the facts of the case. Sheldon Thompson was found guilty by a Carlton County jury of eight counts of murder in June 2022, after five days of testimony. Five of the eight counts were first-d...

  • Veterans Day: War, astronauts and big blasts ... Navy vet saw a lot during his service

    Mike Creger|Nov 10, 2023

It may seem odd for a Vietnam War era military veteran to refer to his experiences as "fun," but that's how Jerry Tschida chooses to remember his time in the U.S. Navy from 1966 to 1969. It was certainly interesting, including trips aboard the USS Princeton to snatch astronauts from the sea and feeling the aftershock of a historic nuclear warhead test off an island in Alaska's Aleutian chain. But there are darker memories that bubbled up later in life. At age 35, he was diagnosed with post...

  • Clock ticks on Cloquet rezoning plea

    Jana Peterson|Nov 10, 2023

A local business owner, his neighbors and the city of Cloquet have at least two more weeks to try to find a solution that would “make more people happy.” Cloquet City councilors voted Tuesday to table a request from business owner Ken Maki to give Maki time to explore other options. The request came because Maki would like to construct an office/shop for his business, on land near his home south of North Road and Sunnyside Lane. In order to do that, he’s asking the city to change its comprehensive plan for that property from moder...

  • Don't plow snow into roadways

    Nov 10, 2023

The Carlton County Transportation Department said the act of plowing snow onto or across a public roadway is a safety hazard and a misdemeanor. The likelihood of a traffic accident or damage to snowplows occurring from a slippery area, frozen rut, bump or large bank on the shoulder is a major safety concern. Snow from private property should be contained within property boundaries as much as possible, thereby avoiding piling or pushing snow into the road right of way. Should an accident occur, the property owner and the person who placed the...

  • Kirsti Marohn, MPR News|Nov 10, 2023

A new report from an environmental advocacy group says wastewater treatment plants and sewage sludge are key pathways for so-called “forever chemicals” to contaminate Minnesota waterways. The report, by the nonprofit Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy and a University of Minnesota professor, says Minnesota state agencies need to take stronger action to regulate PFAS in wastewater, as other states have done. PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are human-made chemicals used in a variety of products, from nonstick cookware to fi...  Website
