Another tumultuous week within the Wrenshall School District saw a school board member formally apologizing to one group of people, while offending another, and teachers and administrators confronting the board about the impact of its behavior. "As a member of the LGBTQ+ community and co-advisor of our (gender-sexualities alliance) club, I can no longer remain quiet as our leadership ignores human and students' rights," said the school's media specialist Chloe Swanson during the board meeting...
As with many other area school districts, the Barnum school board approved an increase in lunch prices, at 10 cents per meal at various levels for the lunch program during its July 26 meeting. The coming school year marks the first time in two years any students will pay for lunch, after a universal free school lunch program was allowed to expire at the end of June. Parents are encouraged to fill out forms to apply for free and reduced-price meals, something they also haven’t had to do over the past two years, when every child could have f...

The scholarship honors a former co-op employee and recognizes student commitment and contribution to local communities. “The State of Minnesota permits electric cooperatives like Lake Country Power to use unclaimed funds for charitable purposes, such as scholarships,” said Lake Country Power’s Greg Schulzetenberg. When a contest needs triple overtime to determine a winner, it's usually been well-played and exciting for everyone, and maybe a little luck was involved. That's exactly what happened last Friday morning at the fifth annual Battle of the Books held in the Cloquet High School auditorium. Fourth-grade students from Cloquet's Washington Elementary, Churchill Elementary, and a group visiting from Ely gathered to compete in front of more than 100 audience members. After about 40 minutes of...

After Cloquet school board members seemed to indicate in March they were OK with the idea of increasing player fees for hockey, four of five board members present voted against the proposal Monday. Hockey players already pay the highest school activity fee. On the other hand, the cost of the high school program is far less than families pay for youth hockey as their children get older, superintendent Michael Cary had pointed out in March. According to the Cloquet Amateur Hockey Association website, the top fee for Bantam players (ages 13-14)...
Contract negotiations between the Wrenshall school district and its teachers went to the rare step of mediation last month in order to resolve sticking points. The Wrenshall school board on Monday agreed to table approval of the eventual agreement until members can check the 36-page document that some received only just before the meeting. The contract, expected to be formally approved by the board at a special meeting next week, will date back to July 1, 2021. One board goal, to increase the starting wage for new teachers in the district,...
Fees for playing on the Lumberjacks varsity and junior varsity hockey teams may increase in the future, as part of an effort by the Cloquet school district to decrease the burden on the overall budget. During the Cloquet school board work session Monday, March 21, board members and administration discussed the expensive lease agreement with the city for use of Northwoods Credit Union Arena for hockey games and practices. Superintendent Michael Cary told the board that player fees for the...

Science fair students and judges logged onto their computers and cellphones last weekend as they - once again - attended the Northeast Minnesota Regional and American Indian Science and Engineering Fair virtually. In a pre-pandemic year, buses and vans would have traveled to the University of Minnesota Duluth from schools as far south as Hinckley-Finlayson and all over the Northland for the regional science fair. Students would set up large display boards in large rooms, ready with an "elevator...
