There are different matches and lunch times available Monday through Thursday. Mondays and Tuesdays will be at Churchill, and Wednesday and Thursdays at Washington. The welcome luncheon will be held Oct. 4 for Churchill and Oct. 6 for Washington, and the program will run from Oct. 18...

Board members from Carlton and Cloquet School districts met for the first time Monday to continue discussions about a possible tuition agreement between the two schools. A tuition agreement would guarantee that Carlton students in grades 9-12 could enroll in the larger district — at a cost to the Carlton district — if and when Carlton closes its high school. Up to this point, only the two superintendents, business managers and the school board chair for each district have been talking. Both boa...
Students and community members turned out for Monday’s Carlton School Board meeting, and most of them had the future of the high school on their mind. Out of nearly 20 people there, seven spoke, all of them against the idea of a tuition agreement with the Cloquet school district. Such an agreement would guarantee that Carlton students in grades 9-12 could enroll in the larger district — at a cost to the Carlton district — if and when Carlton closes its high school. The current long-range plan fo...
There has been plenty of activity at Cloquet High School this week with homecoming events. Today, the homecoming court took part in fun and games as part of a pep fest before the football game. A king and queen will be crowned at halftime. The court includes, from left to right, front row: Katie Turner, Emerson Rock, Olivia Macaulay, Lydia Stone, Dana Jones, Olivia Jameson, Ilei Benson, Addie Loeb, Rylee Burkhart, Amelia Allen; back row: Carson Essler, Cale Prosen, Jack Liang, Reese Turnbull,...
Emotions were high Wednesday at Washington Elementary School as students returned for a new school year. Staff members were joyful, yet took charge tenderly as the younger students alternated between tears, confusion and excitement about the new school year. Bus drivers also had to hold the doors open longer and repeat the stop more than once as children trickled off the yellow buses. First-grader Finley White walked to school and bravely said goodbye to his dad, Chris White. He took three steps...
The Wrenshall school board will have its committee of the whole meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8 at the school. The meeting is open to the public and includes a host of issues up for discussion, which is all board members can do at such committee meetings. The agenda includes back to school and construction update matters. The board removed an item about discussion of an investigation the board approved of last week regarding the ethical conduct of one of its members at a special meeting Aug. 31 regarding Covid-19 policies at the school....
A petition is now circulating in the Wrenshall school district to block an appointment to the school board made Aug. 16. The hasty vote-in of Bill Dian to replace new school principal Michelle Blanchard — made with no discussion among board members — rankled enough people with its lack of transparency to get the petition going. The petition states that the board “selected a candidate who was interviewed privately by the board chair and a few school board members rather than holding a public interview process or even discussion of candi...
In July, Mounds View Public School officials sent emails to families, telling them the district would only recommend, not require people to wear masks in school buildings. “As we’ve learned over the past 18 months, guidance can change quickly depending on the spread of Covid-19 and our local conditions. This decision reflects our current intentions, but it is subject to change,” Superintendent Chris Lennox and board chair Jonathan Weinhagen wrote in an email to district families and staff. In just over two weeks, those intentions had indee... Website

Local school board members faced crowded board rooms this week as parents and others turned out in opposition to school districts requiring masks when kids return to school after Labor Day. Unlike last fall, there is no statewide state of emergency, which means decisions are local. Board members in Cloquet and Esko listened attentively to their constituents, but made no promises this week. Rather, they scheduled special meetings to discuss the issue in greater depth, and said they will wait to...
Almost every morning for 10 weeks, college student Emma Waugh has risen out of bed and logged onto her computer in her Cloquet bedroom to start work on a project for NASA. With specialized computer programs open, she spends her time coding and analyzing data from satellite imagery of several lakes in central Texas, monitoring for potential algae blooms. Waugh's four colleagues meet with her on Zoom at least once a day to discuss the project, and hours are spent learning in front of the...
Superintendent John Engstrom read his prepared statement. After a pause that encapsulated the import of his words, Carlton school board member Sue Karp said “well stated.” Three other board members agreed. “Our hearts are in a K-12,” Karp later said. The lament in the school library during one of those typical short July meetings was palpable. Engstrom had just laid out a future for the district that didn’t include educating students in grades 9-12. He announced that talks with Cloquet to release Carlton students to its high school had reach...
The Wrenshall school district is moving ahead with plans to update a moldering building on its campus into a space for industrial and technology classrooms. The school board approved a plan Monday that requires $3.1 million to shore up the former rec building, money that would likely come from a non-voter-approved levy. This is adding to the $9.3 million nonvoter-approved levy the board passed in early 2020 to cover projects that are now being completed at the school. The district is allowed to...
The Esko School Board approved pay hikes for noncontract substitute workers during its July 12 meeting, citing a need to not only attract new substitutes but also to show appreciation for the current roster of substitutes. The rates for substitute teachers did not change, and will remain at $120 per day or $60 per half-day. But substitute paraprofessionals, food service, and custodian workers and program assistants all will receive $12 per hour, a raise of 50 cents per hour. Superintendent...

Consolidation between the Carlton and Wrenshall school districts is no longer on pause. It's dead. The Carlton school board on Monday voted to remove consolidation from its list of future options for the foundering district. Left on the list are two expensive options for district residents: turning the South Terrace elementary into a preK-8 school and releasing high schoolers to another district, or creating a new preK-12 school at South Terrace. While the Carlton board plans to conduct a...
