The Minnesota Department of Education released Class of 2020 graduation rate data for the state earlier this month. Overall, Minnesota high school seniors reached another historic graduation rate high of 83.8 percent (56,684 students) who graduated in 2020. This continues an upward trend for the statewide four-year graduation rate, which has increased 1.3 percentage points in the last five years. Additionally, 3,490 students from earlier classes also earned their diplomas in 2020, graduating five, six or seven years after beginning high school....
Students in Jennifer Mangan's fourth-grade class at Washington Elementary School play resonator bells purchased with grant funds in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Cloquet Education Foundation awarded money for the bells, which will get years of use in the classroom. With help from Washington's Partners in Education group, both music classrooms there are now fully equipped with bell sets. "During the Covid-19 pandemic, elementary music, as we know it, could not exist," said Washington...

The Cloquet school board is whittling away at changing a new normal into just plain normal after an entire school year under the Covid-19 pandemic protocols. On Monday, board members agreed that masking mandates in district buildings would be lifted by the end of June, mirroring a loosening of protective measures sparked by state and national guidance as the threat of Covid-19 has ebbed. Superintendent Michael Cary said current recommendations call for masks to be worn in school buildings only during the school day. He said it would make sense...
Jana Peterson [email protected] To make up for learning lost during the pandemic, Esko schools have a plan to help students who are struggling catch up and stay on top of their learning without giving up their summer vacation. Esko School Board members unanimously approved two plans — one for secondary, one for elementary — for summer learning to help “bridge” the gap caused in part by distance learning over the past school year. At the elementary level, principal Brian Harker said teachers...
Barnum school officials are meeting with officials from the Moose Lake and Willow River districts to discuss schedules and busing changes for the next school year. “We are discussing the parts of the school bus routes that we can share,” Barnum superintendent Mike McNulty said. “Some of our routes are the other school districts. Some students from each of the school districts go to school in one of the other districts, so we are talking about how to keep bus routes from overlapping.” McNulty said the districts have also discussed startin...
Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College in Cloquet conferred associate degrees and diplomas on the 157 students from its class of 2021 during a virtual commencement ceremony May 13. College president Stephanie Hammitt held out hope that it will be the last ceremony of its type in a while. "We find ourselves once again celebrating apart and virtually, rather than together," she said. "But our enthusiasm and happiness for your accomplishments is not diminished." The 2020 Student of the Year, Hope...
The Carlton school board agreed this week to move forward with a survey of district residents on a list of options for the future of the district. The survey will come after attempts to consolidate with neighboring district Wrenshall have stalled on issues around debt sharing and the fact that a state bill that would provide financial assistance remains in limbo. In a 6-0 vote at its regular monthly meeting Monday, the Carlton board agreed to begin gathering information for a survey that will...

As of right now, Cloquet High School plans are to hold both prom and graduation outside, according to principal Steve Battaglia. Prom will be in the school parking lot with large tents “to help facilitate air flow,” Battaglia said. He said the student leadership team wants the school to explore holding it indoors, but moving inside creates challenges. “We’re finding that we’ll have to significantly cut capacity if we try to do that,” the principal said, adding that prom plans are still fluid. Graduation will be on the football field. “Our...
The Friends of Brad Memorial Foundation $1000 scholarship is available for students in rural northeastern Minnesota who plan to pursue music in college. The foundation is providing two scholarships. The foundation was created in 2010 to honor the memory of Bradley Edward Rozman, a percussionist and native of Virginia, Minnesota who passed away in 2009. The foundation honors Rozman through its programs that seek to cultivate and celebrate young musicians. The foundation started the BradFest summer music festival in Two Harbors in 2010 and has...
Samuel Rengo, son of Todd and Sandra Rengo of Esko, was named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota. Rengo is a junior political science major. Four students from Cloquet were named to Bemidji State University’s dean’s list for fall semester. They are Stephanie Ferguson, Preston Lowe, Allyson Rahkola, and Spencer Wehr....
The Esko school board approved a revamped graduation party for its students that will be abbreviated from the traditional all-night event during its meeting Monday night. In previous years, graduates would board a bus after the ceremony and enjoy a cruise on the Vista Fleet in Duluth, while parents prepared the gymnasium for an all-night event designed to keep students in a safe environment. Last year, the event was canceled due to the pandemic. This year, the parent-run organizing committee...
In contrast to last fall’s “doom and gloom” budget forecast, Cloquet superintendent Michael Cary was almost optimistic about the revised budget numbers during Monday’s Cloquet school board meeting. It helps that the state budget office recently predicted a $1.6 billion surplus, swinging from a predicted $1.3 billion deficit. Cloquet school district finance director Candace Nelis walked board members through the revised figures and predictions for the next school year. She based next year’s...
Cloquet High School students will return to full in-person learning effective Tuesday, March 16. That is happening despite the objections of the teachers union, which requested the district delay the return until April 6, the start of the fourth quarter, to more safely address the risks of Covid-19. Superintendent Michael Cary said he brought it to the Cloquet school board for a vote Monday rather than just an FYI because of the letter from the Education Minnesota Cloquet executive board, which noted it was representing roughly 50 percent of...
Vaccination acceleration may finally be here. The Health Department on Wednesday reported about 32,000 new vaccinations in Minnesota, nearly twice the number from last Wednesday. The seven-day trend is running at nearly 39,000 shots daily now, the highest since vaccinations began in late December. State public health leaders have said for weeks that they’d be ready to ramp up when they got more supply. With the federal government now promising enough vaccine to inoculate every adult American by the end of May — two months earlier than exp... Website
The Pine Knot News asked the superintendents of the Wrenshall and Carlton school districts to update readers on the state of consolidation. Wrenshall superintendent Kim Belcastro weighs in here: Since being hired as superintendent of Wrenshall school in 2012, the Carlton and Wrenshall districts have been in and out of consolidation talks for at least eight of the nine years. Many community members from the two districts will state that these talks have been going on for decades. It has been my priority to work closely with the Wrenshall school...
The Pine Knot News asked the superintendents of the Wrenshall and Carlton school districts to update readers on the state of consolidation. Carlton superintendent John Engstrom weighs in here: The Carlton school board is currently in the process of exploring various options. The primary options under consideration right now are a K-8 school with a high school tuition agreement, a new K-12 school, and reconstituting consolidation talks with Wrenshall along with gauging the interest of other area small districts in finding additional ways to...
It's beginning to look like this school year will be a turnaround from previous school year, at least in terms of the pandemic. Last year, students enjoyed school as usual until mid-March, when Gov. Tim Walz and the Minnesota Department of Health abruptly informed schools they would need to close March 18-27. But students never came back - the school year was finished via distance learning, with students, teachers, parents and other staff figuring things out on the fly. This time around it may...
Following the declaration of a "pause" in consolidation talks between Carlton and Wrenshall school districts, Cloquet superintendent Michael Cary said Carlton had reached out to Cloquet again to discuss a range of future possibilities. It isn't the first time Carlton and Cloquet have talked, but Cary said he wanted approval from the school board - which he got during Monday's board meeting - because Carlton has a superintendent he hasn't talked to about consolidation along with new board...
