The high school tutoring program will provide remedial help and focus on credit recovery, which is for juniors and seniors who may need help to earn the credits needed to graduate. The elementary school program, led by principal Brian Harker, will focus on remedial needs in the core subjects such as reading and math. Esko school board members approved both plans...

  • School staff navigating vaccination road

    Jana Peterson|Feb 12, 2021

By working with as many sources as possible, the Cloquet school district is making good progress getting staff members vaccinated for Covid-19. Superintendent Michael Cary told Cloquet school board members that they started the process with the state efforts, but found that when 42 people traveled to the regional vaccine center in Mt. Iron there wasn't enough vaccine to go around. More recently, Carlton County has been an incredibly important partner in the process, he said. "The last couple of weeks the county has gotten doses that they're...

  • Back to school ... again

    Jana Peterson|Jan 29, 2021

First-grade teacher Ann Doesken was expecting Tuesday to feel like the first day of school in the fall. After all, it was the first day of in-person learning since schools went to distance learning in November when the Covid-19 rates started going through the roof. But it wasn't. It was better. "Everyone just jumped right in and didn't miss a beat," said the overjoyed teacher, adding that there was little of that first-day nervousness for kids. "It felt amazing to be with students in person. My...

    Lois E. Johnson|Jan 22, 2021

Students went back to the Barnum elementary and high schools Tuesday, Jan. 19. “It was great to hear their voices in the halls again,” said Barnum superintendent Mike McNulty in a telephone interview later that day. “I hope that lasts a long time.” The elementary students have returned to school five days a week, while the high school students attend school four days a week. They participate in distance learning on Wednesdays, explained McNulty. “Wednesday is a day for the teachers to do preparation work,” said McNulty. “We don’t have th...

    Jana Peterson|Jan 15, 2021

Expect to see children in a school near you very soon. School districts across Carlton County will have students back to in-person or hybrid learning as soon as next week, thanks to a change in state guidelines for Covid-19 precautions. While the previous guidelines required districts to rely on county-level data on the level of virus transmission in their communities, the latest plan allows schools to bring students back as soon as Jan. 18, provided they meet certain requirements. Those...

    Pine Knot News|Dec 25, 2020

According to an email from Cloquet schools superintendent Michael Cary, the district is eying Jan. 4 for the Cloquet school district to begin to evaluate its ability to return elementary students to classrooms. This follows new recommendations from the state which allows and even encourages school districts to return elementary students (not secondary) to full in-person instruction, even when county case rates remain elevated, beginning on Jan. 18. If districts choose to return students to in-person or hybrid learning, the implementation must...

  • District financials stay the course, good and bad

    Mike Creger|Dec 25, 2020

The good news for the Carlton school district is that there were no surprises and things stayed pretty much the same as years before in the annual audit released Monday night. That’s also the bad news as the district continues to face rising costs associated with more students living within the district choosing to go to school somewhere else. The district is not getting “economies of scale,” reported Matt Mayer from BerganKDV, which performed the audit. He was reporting at the final regular meeting of the school board for the year. In 2016,...

Tim Walz and a unanimous vote by the Esko school board Monday night. • District considering return of students

    Jana Peterson|Dec 18, 2020

Governor Tim Walz said elementary schools could return to in-person classes on Jan. 18, regardless of county Covid case rates, as long as they adopt a number of strategies to contain the spread of the coronavirus, including a testing program for all staff who interact with students. But it’s still up to individual school districts to decide if the conditions are right, bearing in mind the greater need for younger children to have in-person instruction. On Monday Cloquet superintendent Michael C...

  • Across state, districts migrate to online

    Elizabeth Shockman|Dec 4, 2020

MPR News With Covid-19 cases, deaths and hospitalizations at or near record highs, roughly 60 percent of Minnesota K-12 students are currently in distance learning - more than double the rate from early October. Many schools pivoted to remote instruction just before Thanksgiving break and plan to stay that way for at least a couple of months. St. Paul Public Schools, for example, which began the year with distance learning, won't resume any in-person instruction until at least Jan. 19, or two...

  • No ACT needed for Alworth scholarships

    Pine Knot News|Dec 4, 2020

With many ACT testing dates canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Alworth Foundation board of directors has determined that eligibility for scholarships will be based solely on a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher this year. “In previous years we’ve required both a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher and an ACT test score of 25 or higher for students to be considered for an Alworth scholarship, but it would be unfair to require a test score when many students have no opportunity to take the test,” said Patty Salo Downs, Alworth Found...
