  • Carlton looking at school options

    Mike Creger|Nov 20, 2020

The Carlton school board voted Monday night to hire a company to provide construction cost estimates on transforming South Terrace Elementary into a facility that could serve three more grades, up to grade 8, or serve all students through 12th grade. The move comes as the board has discussed its options the past month since state funding fell through this year for a consolidation with Wrenshall. The South Terrace studies won’t be new to Carlton taxpayers. The district did similar studies leading up to a failed referendum in 2017 to expand t...

  • No actions after teacher investigation

    Jana Peterson|Nov 20, 2020

An investigation sparked by allegations targeting past and present Cloquet school district staff on social media has been completed and will result in no disciplinary action by the district, superintendent Michael Cary told the Pine Knot News on Monday. It was late August when Facebook and Instagram accounts associated with Madeline Kiehn, a 2012 Cloquet grad, started lighting up with stories about teachers and staff in the school district after Kiehn asked people to share. The posts came from myriad sources and included claims regarding both p...

    Pine Knot News|Oct 23, 2020

Wrenshall teacher Molly Kidd has been honored with the K-12 Art Educator of the Year award by Art Educators of Minnesota. The veteran teacher was nominated by Wrenshall's speech language pathologist, Theresa O'Gara, after O'Gara saw time and again how Kidd presented engaging, creative lessons and then let her students fly. Kidd said she is dedicated to the growth of her students as artists and critics of the world, and she has spent years crafting her lessons so they build upon each other year a...

  • Music will play along with extra fall sports in Esko

    Shannon Genereau|Oct 2, 2020

The Esko school board continued its focus on addressing issues created by the coronavirus at its meeting Thursday, Sept. 24. The recent decision by the Minnesota State High School League to bring football and volleyball back to fall with an abbreviated season prompted the board to re-evaluate some of the school events they had not yet started or had placed on hold. Programming for grades 7-12 will be returning. Activities director Chad Stoskopf provided a breakdown on what changes would be...

  • Sub shortage still crippling schools

    Mike Creger|Oct 2, 2020

People coming down with Covid-19 is not the problem handcuffing the Cloquet school district. It’s the waiting for test results when someone shows symptoms. That was the assessment this week from superintendent Mike Cary as the district continues to have problems replacing staff with an “absolute dire need” for substitutes. A typical scenario, Cary told the school board at its regular meeting Monday, is a teacher has a family member with symptoms. That person gets tested and there is a three- to five-day wait for results. The entire famil...

  • Carlton, Wrenshall schools report smooth starts

    Mike Creger|Sep 18, 2020

Reports to the school boards at Carlton and Wrenshall this week showed that the two small districts had relatively drama-free starts to the year despite intense pressure due to Covid-19 pandemic protocols. In Wrenshall, the major hitch remains the continuing construction project to improve the heating and air conditioning in the elementary portion of the K-12 building. It is expected that the project will wrap up by early November. Superintendent Kim Belcastro reported to the board that enrollment is slightly down from past years, at 367...

  • Ask a Trooper: School bus safety advice

    Sep 11, 2020

Sgt. Neil Dickenson of the Minnesota State Patrol offers some timely reminders on safety around school buses as the new school year starts up: • Parents should discuss and demonstrate pedestrian safety with their children and reinforce safe crossing after exiting a bus. • When getting off a bus, look to be sure no cars are passing on the shoulder. • Before crossing the street, wait until the driver’s face can be seen. Wait for the driver to signal that it’s safe to cross. • Look left, right...

  • As cases climb, schools shift toward hybrid learning

    Jana Peterson|Sep 4, 2020

With positive Covid-19 cases trending upward in Carlton County, some schools are taking a second look at the idea of all students attending school in person this fall. In Carlton, according to superintendent John Engstrom, school will still open the first week (Sept. 8-11) in person, but students in grades 7-12 will transition to a hybrid model — with students doing both distance and in-person learning — starting Monday, Sept. 14 through at least Oct. 2. As of last Thursday, the rate in Car...

  • Community college opening on hybrid schedule

    Caleb Swanson|Aug 21, 2020

It's not only K-12 schools that are struggling with decisions about how to return to school - colleges everywhere are constructing plans and integrating new ideas and technology to make education available to students in all situations as the Covid-19 pandemic continues. Locally, Fond du lac Tribal and Community College will start school Monday with a mix of learning styles: with students attending a "Zoom classroom" online, and in-person for clinicals and other classes that require skills...

  • Surveys, stats and state will drive school openings

    Mike Creger|Aug 7, 2020

An August scramble like no other is on across Carlton County this August as schools prepare to reopen for the year. School boards, staff and administrators are meeting this week and next to make almost-final decisions after it was announced last week by Gov. Tim Walz that districts will have discretion on how school days will go while still in the grips of the Covid-19 pandemic. This week, more fodder was tossed in as the Minnesota State High School League on Tuesday moved the volleyball and foo...

  • Students weigh in on school plans

    Caleb Swanson|Aug 7, 2020

Pine Knot News intern Caleb Swanson asked Carlton County students how they feel about plans to reopen schools this fall: "I don't want to go back because online was easier for me. But on the other hand, I do want to go back to be with my friends and just be in school again. The one thing I do not want Esko to do is to keep kids in the same classroom every day." Caden Grayson, Esko sophomore "I for sure want everything to go back to normal but I doubt that will happen. I'm hoping Esko still has...

  • Minneapolis schools will go all virtual

    Minnesota Public Radio|Jul 31, 2020

Minneapolis Public Schools students will not go back to school in a traditional manner this fall, instead starting out the school year virtually. District officials announced their plan to resume full distance learning at a board meeting Tuesday. A final vote is set to take place in August. The decision comes ahead of a delayed statewide announcement that Gov. Tim Walz was expected to make Thursday. By comparision, many schools in more rural areas, like in Carlton County, are considering plans that would combine distance learning days with...

  • Schools strain for clarity on opening

    Mike Creger|Jul 24, 2020

As a pandemic summer heats up meteorologically, so has the national rhetoric around how school districts will start classes in August and September. Normally sleepy and short meetings of school boards across Carlton County have become hours-long discussions on what school days will look like in the fall. Committees of staff have formed and ramped up planning in the past few weeks as an announcement is expected Monday from state leaders on how things will proceed. While Covid-19 cases in...

  • Some, but not daily, school time discussed

    Jana Peterson|Jul 10, 2020

As schools continue to plan for three possible scenarios for resuming classes in the fall, details continue to emerge. As reported in the Pine Knot News on June 26, state officials told schools to prepare for three different possibilities in the fall: 1. In-person learning for all students with as much space between students as feasible during the day. 2. A hybrid model with stricter social distancing and capacity limits in the building and buses. 3. Distance learning only. In the weeks since...

  • School ready for a multiple fall scenarios

    Jana Peterson|Jun 26, 2020

State officials told schools last week to prepare for three different scenarios in the fall, but they won't hear which one to implement until late July. And even that scenario could change, depending on local COVID-19 infection rates. The three contingency plans follow: 1. In-person learning for all students with as much space between students as feasible during the day. 2. A hybrid model with stricter social distancing and capacity limits in the building and buses. 3. Distance learning only....

  • School budgets offer tale of two districts

    Mike Creger|Jun 19, 2020

The two districts attempting to pull off a consolidation in the next year showed strikingly different anticipated budgets for the next year. The Carlton and Wrenshall school boards met in regular monthly sessions Monday night via online platforms. Carlton continues to bleed money. Board members passed a budget showing that revenues in the 2020-2021 school year won’t keep up with expenses by about $457,000. It’s a continuing pattern for the district that is slowly eating away at its budget reserves as enrollment continues to dwindle. Out...

  • Purple PRIDE pulses through Cloquet school

    Jana Peterson|Jun 19, 2020

Cloquet's Washington Elementary School got some positive reinforcement of its own earlier this month, when the Minnesota Department of Education named it a Sustaining Exemplar School for its successful work using Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports. Students and parents at Washington don't call it PBIS, though - for them it's "Purple PRIDE." PRIDE stands for having a Positive attitude, being Respectful, Including others and Doing your best Everyday. It is essentially a code of...

  • Carlton picks short-term superintendent

    Mike Creger|Jun 12, 2020

The Carlton school board has chosen its next superintendent to replace Gwen Carman, who is leaving for a job in southeastern Minnesota. John Engstrom said the Carlton job appealed to him because it's a one-year stint and not too far from where he is living, southwest of Minneapolis near Lake Minnetonka. The school board officially hired Engstrom during an online meeting Monday. The district will pay Engstrom $108,243 on a one-year contract that begins July 1. Engstrom's last job was at Friess...
