    Jana Peterson|May 3, 2024

When the Northern Lights Academy was created seven years ago by the 12 school districts served by the Northern Lights Special Education Cooperative, it gave those schools a place to send students they couldn't serve on their own. It also gave the students - who might have autism or significant emotional and behavioral disabilities and/or mental health needs - a place where they could be surrounded by classmates with similar needs and teachers specially trained to help them. Northern Lights...

  • Board cuts 23 to balance budget

    Jana Peterson|Apr 19, 2024

More than four years later, the Covid-19 ripple effect continues, with school districts everywhere coming to terms with the end of federal grant funding intended to help students recover from the effects of the pandemic. On Friday, Cloquet school board members approved roughly $1.6 million in staff cuts — 23 employees in total — most of those the result of federal Covid dollars and a state literacy grant ending this year. About a quarter of the job cuts were due to declining enrollment. School board chair Nate Sandman said this was the lar...

  • Board talks bathrooms

    Jana Peterson|Feb 2, 2024

Cloquet High School bathrooms could soon be home to vape detectors if school administrators have their way. In response to questions about bathrooms and a state law requiring that schools provide space for gender-neutral, single-user restroom and locker room facilities, superintendent Michael Cary said he’s gotten no complaints about making the former faculty bathrooms available to all. It was the most simple solution at every school, since the single stall bathrooms were already essentially gen...

  • Wrenshall school board preps for 'cushion' loan

    Brady Slater|Dec 8, 2023

The Wrenshall school board will vote later this month on another loan to support cash flow during a period of time in the new year when district funds will be at their lowest. Speaking at Tuesday’s work session of the board, superintendent Jeff Pesta compared the $300,000 loan to last year, when the board approved a $500,000 loan. “This is truly our safety net,” Pesta said, later telling the Pine Knot, “in my recommendation to the board, I’m reasoning that the cost of borrowing $300,000 is worth it to eliminate the small risk of coming up...

    Jana Peterson|Nov 24, 2023

The group of 16 Wrenshall students quickly separated into small groups outside the Carlton VFW last week, as they hammered and cut the final pieces of the walk-in cooler they'd been building since September. Carter Woodall climbed a ladder to hammer nails into the fascia above, while Tyler Scott held the ladder to make sure his classmate didn't fall. Another group added trim - a job they had to start over - while others took turns drilling, sawing and hammering elsewhere on the tan and sage...
