  • You can learn a lot from this monkey

    Mar 6, 2020

Don't give up, Duluth cartoonist, illustrator and author Chris Monroe told a room full of third-graders at Washington Elementary School last month. She walked the kids through various versions of Chico Bon Bon, the star of her "Monkey with a Toolbelt" series of children's books. "He looks like a horror monkey," said one child of an earlier version. Monroe did lots and lots of sketches before she arrived at her true vision of her tool-belt wearing, fix-it-or-build-it monkey. "Eventually I found h...

  • District: Mascot rights unclear

    Jana Peterson|Feb 28, 2020

The Cloquet school district has a mystery it needs solved: Who really created the school's ubiquitous grizzled lumberjack mascot logo? The subject came up as part of a discussion over rights to the logo, as a new sporting goods store is opening on Cloquet Avenue and the Lumberjack logo figures large in the Cloquet Sporting Goods' decor and marketing. "They've essentially done all their branding using the lumberjack logo," superintendent Michael Cary told the Cloquet school board during its...

  • Consolidation survey: A resounding 'yes'

    Mike Creger|Feb 14, 2020

Sue Peterson had some choice words about the survey results released this week regarding how residents feel about the possible consolidation of the Carlton and Wrenshall school districts. “Atypical.” “Shocking.” “Surprising.” Peterson works for School Perceptions, the company hired by the school districts to guide the survey. The school boards wanted a clear idea of where residents stood on consolidation and the costs to accomplish it. They want it. And they seem willing to pay for it as well....

  • Barnum school district faces painful budget decisions

    Lois E. Johnson|Feb 14, 2020

The double whammy of fewer students and state and federal mandates that aren’t fully funded has the Barnum School Board looking at major cuts to keep the budget in the black. The issues aren’t new, nor are they unique to the Barnum school district. However, after five years of deficit spending, the school board now needs to make $750,000 in cuts or risk going into statutory operating debt. A large crowd of concerned residents attended the working meeting of the Barnum school board Feb. 4. It wasn’t so much a presentation from staff to audie...

  • Cloquet Board OKs move to new emergency communication system

    Jana Peterson|Feb 14, 2020

On Monday, the Cloquet school board took a vote that made students and staff safer AND saved the district money. Instead of spending between $100,000 and $180,000 to replace the district’s aging walkie-talkie system — many of the devices are failing and often don’t work throughout the buildings — board members voted to switch the district to an emergency cellular network. Rather than walkie-talkies, the district will purchase FirstNet iPhones (at a cost of 99 cents each) with a Push-to...

  • A banner day at the science fair

    Jana Peterson|Feb 7, 2020

This year's 68th annual Northeastern Minnesota Regional Science Fair welcomed 119 students from 16 different schools, displaying and explaining 106 different projects. A total of 115 different judges listened and questioned the student presenters, then scored, ranked and awarded whatever categories they were judging. • A shot at one-act glory for local casts

    Jana Peterson|Jan 24, 2020

Ready, set, act. It's not quite a race, but things will be happening pretty fast Saturday when Cloquet High School hosts a one-act play competition in the school's recently remodeled auditorium. Six different schools will perform in the one-act play subsection event here. Because the Section 7AA competition is in Cloquet, there won't be a separate performance here as there were in the past. The cast welcomes the public to see them perform at noon. Plays will be presented from 10 a.m. through...

  • Esko actors take 'Our Place' to Two Harbors

    Pine Knot News|Jan 24, 2020

Esko High School actors will transport their audience and judges to the lakeside in their One Act performance of "Our Place." The play is composed of five scenes and an epilogue, all of which take place on a dock, explained director Joyce Bergstedt. Each group of characters that comes to the dock claims it as "our place" for a variety of reasons. The play concludes with all characters returning to the stage for at least a part of the epilogue in which the characters express their point of view...

  • Cromwell-Wright selects 'sweet' comedy

    Jan 24, 2020

Cromwell-Wright High School selected "Hard Candy" by Jonathon Rand for this year's One Act play. Director Mary Rose Varo said it's a funny play, centering around a fast-paced series of hilarious interviews by job applicants at Banff Enterprises who will do anything to claw their way up the corporate ladder. "We have a cast of eight very talented junior high and high schoolers, several of them playing more than one role," said Varo. The director and music teacher pointed out that plays in...

  • 'Mermaid' is a smash hit

    Pine Knot News|Nov 22, 2019

The Cloquet High School production of "The Little Mermaid" last weekend was both spectacular and record-breaking. The first fall musical in the newly renovated CHS auditorium sold out all four shows for the first time in theater department history. According to director Kevin Hamre, the auditorium holds 520 seats and they added 24 more folding chairs to accommodate the overflow. "We sold out to the max and more each night," Hamre said. "People didn't care where they sat. They just wanted to be...

  • Look at that! Study of currents is an electricfying experience

    Glen Sorenson|Nov 22, 2019

Hello, to all the electricity users out there, and that includes most of us. Hopefully, your coffee maker went on this morning, your cell phone was charged, the toaster worked, and your car headlights went on during your dark morning commute. All of these activities most of us depend on are driven by the movement of small subatomic particles called electrons; there is a reason the words "electron" and "electricity" are related to one another. How in the heck do we get these tiny, negatively...

  • Carlton/Wrenshall commitment clash clouds consolidation

    Mike Creger|Nov 15, 2019

The results of what at times was a contentious meeting of school board members from Wrenshall and Carlton Tuesday will be seen at each board's regular meetings next week. There should be two identical resolutions on the respective agendas. They will be worded the same, but judging from the conversation at the joint meeting Tuesday, they're being crafted by two clashing mindsets. Wrenshall board members were expecting a firm commitment from the Carlton board that it was moving ahead on...
