People are invited to share their thoughts about wolf management as the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources updates the state’s 20-year-old wolf management plan. This public input opportunity is available through today on the wolf plan section of the DNR’s community engagement website. The engagement website includes a questionnaire, online forum on topics related to the update of the management plan and a timeline of the update process. Later in the process, the public will have an opportunity to comment on draft updates to the sta...
Moose Lake resident Karen Slater captured this photo of a late-season watercraft rider on Moosehead Lake Sunday, when the temperature reached into the low 70s. Less than three days later, Carlton County got more than half a foot of snow overnight Tuesday. By 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Cloquet's Darin Nelson, below, had already used the snowblower on his sidewalk and driveway and was cleaning up with a shovel with a remarkably sunny attitude considering the wet heavy snow that made up the bottom layer...
The annual event that brings families and friends together kicked off this past weekend when the 2020 Minnesota firearms deer season opened. Deer camps across the state welcomed young and old alike as they melted into forested areas in search of that elusive whitetail deer. I am fortunate to have hunted in three wonderful deer camps. As a kid, I hunted at our family shack near Hardwood Lake, then it was off to Beaver Creek Outfitters in Gowan, as well as Black Lake Outfitters in Cromwell. All of...
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conservation officers were busy during the opening of the firearms deer season last week. Here is what some of the officers from the region reported: Scott Staples (Carlton) worked a baiting case and other tips that were called in. One person who has had several DNR violations in the past was found to be hunting deer over bait, hunting deer without a license and unlawfully possessing a firearm. Assistance was given with a medical call where a hunter fell 16 feet out of his deer stand. Other violations...
Winter anglers on Mille Lacs Lake will enjoy a walleye harvest this winter for the fifth season in a row. Starting Dec. 1, anglers will be allowed to keep one walleye between 21-23 inches or one fish longer than 28 inches. This is the same regulation as the last two winter seasons. Mille Lacs was popular during the winter of 2019-2020, in part due to poor ice conditions on other large Minnesota lakes. Anglers put in a record of more than 3 million fishing hours on the lake....
Participation in voluntary CWD testing is critical to managing CWD in Minnesota’s wild deer The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is reminding deer hunters to participate in chronic wasting disease testing in designated areas, following lower than anticipated harvest numbers and hunter sample submissions during the opening of the firearms deer season last weekend. “We saw lower than normal harvest numbers during opening weekend, and the number of samples we’ve collected so far is not as high as we’d anticipated,” said Michelle... Riders of recreational off-highway vehicles should be aware of upcoming closures of OHV trails on some state lands for firearms deer hunting season. The restrictions apply to all designated OHV trails and routes on state forest lands. Vehicles affected by the restrictions include all-terrain vehicles, off-highway motorcycles and off-road vehicles such as four-wheel drive trucks that are not being used in conjunction with deer hunting by a licensed deer hunter. The restrictions apply to state forest trails and access routes but not to state...
Deer hunting season starts tomorrow, but the signs have been there for weeks. Behind shoppers' masks at the Super One grocery store, I've noticed more patrons (men, I think) sprouting beard growth and buying a lot of meat. It has been a cold October. Already in northeastern Minnesota, there has been snow staying on the ground for a few weeks. Now a warmup is upon us for opening day. The annual deer harvest ritual -some call it a Minnesota state holiday or vacation - runs Nov. 7-22 for most...
Minnesota’s firearms deer season begins half an hour before sunrise on Saturday, Nov. 7, and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources expects nearly half a million hunters to participate. To assist with your coverage of the deer season, here are materials about deer hunting in Minnesota. Firearms deer season is one of several seasons for deer hunters. Archery deer season opened Sept. 19 and lasts through Thursday, Dec. 31. Muzzleloader deer season is Saturday, Nov. 28 through Sunday, Dec. 13. Hunters are advised to make a deer hunting p...
Anyone buying a license online from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources — especially licenses with application deadlines — should be aware they may need to give themselves some extra time to verify their name in the electronic licensing system. People can buy DNR licenses online at mndnr.gov/buyalicense. Hunters who order deer licenses and tags online should allow 5-10 business days for delivery....
When you think about the Nemadji Watershed, what comes to mind? Maybe it is hunting and fishing in the Nemadji State Forest or one of the watershed’s many trout streams. Maybe it is where you call home or where your food is grown. Or you might think of the red waters that flow to north to Lake Superior. The Nemadji Watershed is a diverse place, with many valuable resources for our local economy and abundant land for recreation. Over the past year, a group of passionate people worked together to create a comprehensive watershed management plan f...
For many years the Carlton Soil and Water Conservation District has recognized outstanding conservation efforts by county property owners, contractors, developers, conservation groups, legislators, and agency partners. This year, for the first time since its inception in 1961, the Carlton SWCD will not have a formal program for public recognition. Due to ongoing restrictions brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, the board voted recently to suspend its annual recognition event in the fall....
Minnesota DNR Wild rice conditions are looking good this year in many areas of Minnesota and the Department of Natural Resources is offering tips and a reminder of important regulations restricting harvesting to rice stands that are ripe. "Favorable weather without too much heavy rain early in the season has been a positive for wild rice," said Ricky Lien, DNR wetland habitat team supervisor. "As people consider harvesting, they need to know the regulations that help protect wild rice stands...
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will use a $1.1 million grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to support the work of Minnesota’s Lake Superior Coastal Program, fund three significant local projects and continue the program’s quarterly Short Term Action Request grants. Project funding includes: • An assessment of shore protection structures along the shoreline. The assessment will examine the effectiveness of structures like seawalls and breakwaters, and their performance under different lake level and s...
Effective Saturday, Aug. 1, anglers can fish for walleye on Mille Lacs Lake and use live bait. The walleye fishing closure and live bait restrictions during the month of July were the result of record ice fishing pressure this past winter that resulted in a harvest of almost 30,000 pounds of walleye. July was selected for the closure because it’s generally the period when warm water temperatures cause the highest rates of hooking mortality. The planned closure reduces, but does not eliminate, the likelihood of an unplanned closure later in t...
The last couple of weeks, I’ve been on several lakes all across the upper half of Minnesota. One thing they have in common, they register the highest surface temperatures I’ve ever encountered. On the Canadian border, mid- to high-70s are pretty common, and around Cloquet, water temps in the 80s are the norm. The heat hasn’t shut down fishing, but adjustments need to be made. Some fish, such as largemouth bass, have no problem with the heat and can be found ultra-shallow all summer long, espec...
The summer of COVID-19. In northern Minnesota, pandemic responses have canceled most local festivals (but not Wrong Days in Wright, and only part of Carlton Daze) and many of the sports leagues that occupy so much time in the summer. Concerts? Largely on hold for now, even outdoors. County fairs are mostly on hiatus as well. But they can't cancel the great outdoors, and that is where many people have fled in the wake of coronavirus. We've seen them walking around town, or taking up different...
Tired of staying home and not hosting friends and family for meals, music evenings and overnights, my husband and I provisioned our small motorhome and set out for a week in the Northwoods. We'd never been to Voyageurs National Park, so we headed directly north, swimming every day a major goal. We stopped at McCarthy Beach State Park. A bit disappointing. The lake is shallow and was almost uncomfortably warm. It was crowded, and most people seemed content to float on puffed-up plastic and play...
Have you heard the buzz? The Carlton Soil and Water Conservation District has been busy helping community members plant pollinator habitat in their backyards. Carlton SWCD recently held its first-ever Native Plant Kit sale, breaking the record of any sale of its kind. Local community members purchased 194 native plant kits geared to several different purposes including attracting monarch butterflies, pine mulch, rain gardens and, the most popular, pollinator kits. Residents came from as far...
The entire Baker crew was in Duluth the other day, and, on a whim, we decided to check out some campers. We pulled into Bullyan RV and proceeded to drive through the line of small travel trailers along the edge of the parking lot, pointing at the ones that our Suburban might safely pull. By the time we parked, we had our short list already narrowed down. We weaved and bobbed around the row of trailers like a flock of ducklings paddling cross current on a lazy afternoon. We jumped over trailer...
Pine Knot News reader Toni Hubbell spotted this mama deer and her three thirsty fawns in her yard on South Oak Street last week, and snapped a quick photo to share with the world. "They are in my yard daily, sometimes eating my flowers," she said. "I just looked up as I knew they were there and it was their dinnertime." Got your own fab photo to share? Email the photo at a large file size along with caption information and photo credit to [email protected] or text to 218-...
A quick yank on the cotter pin, a spin of the wrench and she was loose. Ten years my Honda prop has been with me every second I've been on the water. Unceremoniously, I relinquished her to the bullpen, dropping her into the side compartment of the Lund. She clanked in disgust. If the old prop could talk, it would have a few tales to tell. It would relive all the miles spinning aimlessly behind the trailer covering endless stretches of northern Minnesota. It would recall the hundreds of lakes...

Pine Knot News subscriber and avid wildlife photographer Mike Farmer shared this photo series of a yellow warbler enjoying a splash in their new water feature. According to blog.nature.org, studies suggest that bathing plays an important role in feather maintenance. Bathtime can also be a time of truce for birds, as evidenced by the chickadee waiting its turn in the background of one of the photos....
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources cautions residents and visitors in northeastern Minnesota to be aware of elevated fire conditions this hot and dry holiday weekend. Recent heavy rains in other parts of the state unfortunately bypassed the abnormally dry Arrowhead Region, leaving fire danger high. An unintentional spark in these dry conditions could ignite a wildfire. "Expanding drought conditions have dried grasses, shrubs, and trees in the area, resulting in increased fire...
