Will Stenberg continues to dazzle with his outdoors photographs, this time with a focus on insects. In June, he found monarch eggs on leaves in his own yard. "They are very tiny," he said. In July, he got close again and captured a dragonfly in action....
Visitors have said words can't really describe what it's like to camp at Allure of the Woods Rustic Retreat in Carlton, but they use the guestbook to try their best: "A cozy, peaceful getaway." "We made memories here." "(It) made me feel like a kid in a really sweet way." "You have sparked our love for nature." For proprietor Denise Coleman Lyng, the words fill her with joy. "My heart's desire is to have a place people can come to feel like it's private, feel like it's safe, and embrace what's...
The Fleet Farm Minnesota Fishing Challenge took place on Gull Lake on June 3, with many fish brought to the scales and many anglers raising funds to give hope to those trapped in addiction, through the services of Minnesota Adult & Teen Challenge. Now the largest fundraising fishing tournament in North America, the event hosted 260 anglers and raised more than $558,000 to fund the livesaving programs of Minnesota Adult & Teen Challenge. This eclipsed the 2022 record of $512,000. In all, the...
Mark Cline stopped by an osprey nest in Carlton just in time to witness a food delivery. He said the little ones aren't big enough to be seen over the edge of the nest yet. The nest is in the middle of the BNSF depot. Cline first noticed it a few years ago while biking on the Munger Trail....
They were going to be out at Chub Lake south of Carlton Saturday no matter the weather. That's where the LeDoux family of Proctor starts the new fishing season each year, Aaron said as he sat in his boat at the public landing just before noon, waiting for wife Tracy, daughter Kaylee and dog Nova to climb aboard. As they were putting in, others were coming out. The common phrase Saturday during Minnesota's fishing opener was "that wind is brutal." And it wasn't creating the good old west wind...
Upon the recommendation of the Carlton County Planning Commission, the Carlton County Board of Commissioners approved zoning changes to the county zoning ordinance Tuesday for cervid farms, kennels and cemeteries. Existing cervid farms (raising deer, elk and/or moose) in Carlton County — there are two — will still be able to operate. However, those operations will not be able to expand, and new ones are prohibited. According to a story in MinnPost, Democratic lawmakers in St. Paul are close to banning new white-tailed deer farms in Min...
All fish have value whether or not anglers typically pursue them. Native fish species benefit their ecosystems and the DNR is bringing more attention toward, and focus on, responsibly managing native fish species. Although not every kind of fish lives everywhere, 162 species of fish can be found in Minnesota waters. Walleye are the most sought-after fish in Minnesota, followed by crappie, then sunfish, northern pike and bass, and all these are native to Minnesota. But there is a whole array of other fish that anglers try to catch, or sometimes...
Saturday marks another step in our slow-crawl spring this year: It's the fishing opener. While most lakes in the Carlton County area are open, don't expect them to be up north, especially in deep inland places like the Gunflint Trail, where ice remained on lakes this week. But it's always odd when we still have snow on the ground and are talking about casting those first lines for bass, walleye or northerns. Here are some Minnesota fishing facts to ponder while on the water this weekend. They...
Lake ice is gone – or on its way out – across much of the state, so the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reminds anyone around lakes, rivers and ponds that cold water is dangerous and unexpected falls can quickly turn tragic. About 30 percent of fatal boating accidents each year happen during the cold-water period, and many involve victims who weren’t wearing a life jacket. The most effective way to survive a fall into cold water is to wear a life jacket and make sure the jacket is buckled or zipped. Falling into icy water can be de...
It’s over. The Pine Knot News has officially declared that winter is over. It’s time to move on. Should we be wrong, we will not print a correction. We’ll take our chances in court with Old Man Winter. If we had the space, we’d spend a lot of newsprint disparaging winter and further increasing our chances of more court dates for libelous commentary. Ah, spring. This is the stuff. This issue celebrates warmer weather this week with a special section tucked inside the print edition of this we...
If you'd like to join a movement, helping the region become a pollinator-friendly one would be a good choice. That's because right here in Carlton County, you can find some of the best resources in turning home yards into an oasis for bees and other pollinators that affect the food chain, and the whole health of the outdoors exponentially. "It's growing," said Alyssa Bloss, a conservation specialist for the Carlton Soil and Water Conservation District. She's been in the field for 14 years and...

For those who have been admiring Will Stenberg’s bird photos in the Pine Knot News lately but yearn to see some of the same birds in the wild, just grab your binoculars and look out your back window or go for a drive. Keeping your eyes open for all beauty in nature is a good idea. “A person has to spend a lot of time in nature and if we aren’t seeing birds, we are also looking for wildflowers,” said Stenberg, who also captures plenty of wildlife in his camera lens, from baby foxes to black b...
Planting time By Patrick Stevens I see flowers in spring: white, yellow, violet, pink all lined up in rows and plots popping here and there potted or not, placed by neighbors’ hands and mine, tended and growing, as if our children were lined up for inspection, bright and cheery, bow ties and curtsies, bursting with life. This sunny May season’s spring days each always a new surprise or a memory as flowers rise to greet another year on summer’s way. I have scrubbed and scoured an acre of soil off my creased hands from pulling weeds, from turn...
Moms who live in Minnesota are invited to join a free virtual fishing challenge May 13-14, during Take a Mom Fishing Weekend, when all Minnesota moms can fish without purchasing fishing licenses. The Minnesota State Legislature established Take a Mom Fishing Weekend in 1988 to coincide with Mother’s Day. This year, the weekend also happens during fishing opener — seasons begin Saturday, May 13, for walleye, northern pike, bass, and trout in lakes. To participate in the Mother’s Day weekend fishing challenge, moms simply need to join the Minne...
Will Stenberg continues his outdoors photo hunt this spring, capturing a blue heron chilling out on the St. Louis River earlier this month. With the flood situation settled down and no new snow in sight, one might be inspired to snap a few signs of spring in the next few weeks. If you do, send one along for print to [email protected] with a brief explanation....
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conservation officer Tony Elwell recently reported an ice fishing shelter violation that resulted in citations. Elwell said a man left his shelter on the ice past the removal deadline last month and was warned. Elwell reported that the man decided to dismantle the shack and bury the pieces in the snow on the ice. As the weather warmed and the snow began to melt, the shelter was revealed. Elwell said the sticker identifying the shack had been scraped off but he was able to match pieces found with a...
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is waiving vehicle permit fees at all 75 state parks and recreation areas on four dates in 2023: April 22, June 10, Sept. 9 and Nov. 24. With the support of the state legislature, the DNR offers free park days to encourage Minnesotans to get outdoors and enjoy the health and wellness benefits of spending time in nature....
According to the Old Farmers Almanac, the Lyrids meteor showers reach their peak on the night of April 21. The moon will be only 9 percent full during the Lyrids’ peak, setting early. This means that if the sky is clear, it should be an excellent show....
An angler caught and released a 46 1/4- inch northern pike on Mille Lacs Lake that the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources certified as a tie with the current catch-and-release state record. Brad Lila caught and released the fish Jan. 22. “I set the hook as the line was quickly peeling out,” Lila said. “Immediately, I knew it was a very large fish because it peeled out drag and there was no stopping it. After about 10 minutes of fighting the fish, I knew that it might take more than me to land it.” Lila hollered and waved for help an...
Minnesota’s stream trout season opens Saturday with quality fishing opportunities in every region of the state, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reports. Brook trout and splake fishing also open on Lake Superior and its tributary streams. Minnesota has roughly 3,800 miles of designated trout streams. Anglers fishing on designated trout waters must have a trout stamp validation in addition to an angling license. Complete trout season details are available at the DNR’s fishing page (mndnr.gov/fishing)....
Minnesota turkey hunting began this week, with opportunities available now through May 31. The season is divided into six hunt periods, A through F. A spring turkey license will provide the opportunity to hunt all permit areas in the state, with the exception of three major wildlife management areas during some of the early hunt periods....
This year’s population estimate of 3,290 moose marks a decade of Minnesota’s moose population remaining relatively stable, according to the results of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ 2023 aerial population survey. Although the estimate dropped from 2022’s estimate of 4,700, the change continues to reflect the population stability observed in previous years. After a decline from a population estimate of approximately 8,000 in 2009, Minnesota’s moose population appears to have stabilized at 3,700. Data collected by researche...
The University of Minnesota has received a $319,820 grant from the Minnesota Forest Resources Council to assess carbon sequestration, storage, and emissions associated with Minnesota forests and forest products. The Department of Natural Resources says that in one year, Minnesota’s forests absorbed 19 million tons of carbon dioxide. That’s the equivalent of taking 4 million gas-powered cars off the road for an entire year. The Nature Conservancy says reforestation and cover cropping are the two most potent climate solutions in the state. It...
