A lifetime of journeys has brought Keiko Satomi to her newest position as adult services librarian for the Cloquet Public Library. A beloved children's librarian here in recent years, Satomi got the adult services job in August. But there was a time when the native of Japan thought Cloquet residents might not accept her as a librarian. Fortunately, she was wrong. Satomi grew up on the core island of Japan in an area called the Shiga Prefecture, a populous state in the middle of the island...

There was a time Emily Lockling didn't know what she wanted to study or do with her future. But a nudge from her mother, Jodie Lockling, a language teacher at the Fond du Lac Ojibwe School, helped to unlock her daughter's potential. "I came home crying one day," Emily said, recalling her days as a first-year student at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College. "I was like, 'I don't want to do this; I don't know why I'm in school anymore.'" Emily's mom asked her to summon one thing about...
The 2022 Cloquet homecoming celebration was a bittersweet moment for the Feehan family, which took center stage as they carried the king and queen's crowns across the football field. Having Noah Feehan, a 2002 CHS grad, honored as the grand marshal for the evening was wonderful. The reason behind the recognition - the fact that the veteran has been diagnosed with brain cancer likely caused by his military service - is the tough part. But Friday was a really good day. "It was so fun and the kids...
In May, the city of Cloquet hired a new library director for its expanded facility on 14th Street in the heart of the city. As with most jobs and careers, there are stereotypical profiles, with the most recognizable librarian stereotype being bespectacled, hair in a tight bun, stamping returned books, and finger on the lips, saying "shush." Courtney Dietsche, Cloquet's new library director, defies that stereotype and is providing fresh leadership in the important role. Dietsche was originally...
Eight 4-H youth from Carlton County competed in the Minnesota 4-H state horse show last month, joining nearly 600 youth from across the state. Held Sept. 16-19, the show requires 4-H students to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in hippology (equine science and husbandry), horse judging (studying and measuring an animal against an accepted ideal), horse training and achievement, speech and demonstrations about interest in horses or the horse industry, showmanship and drill team skills. Lying in a hospital bed last Monday, Holly Goad told her youngest son, Perry, to keep up with football while she was there. Perry kept that promise. Holly died Thursday, Sept. 22, and the Cloquet senior played one of his best games Friday night, a contest the Lumberjacks won 14-8 over Duluth East. "I promised my mom I'd do my best to make her proud," the Cloquet senior said. He wore a special sleeve on his right arm Friday. "Momma, this one's for you," it reads, with a heart below the word...
The 20 members of the Cloquet homecoming court were announced, with the king and queen to be crowned during halftime of Friday's game after a week of activities at the high school....
You've heard of manna from heaven? Last weekend, 432 volunteers came to the Cloquet Armory and packed 109,080 special MannaPack rice meals for the Feed my Starving Children charity in a "mobile pack" event. "Our community is awesome," said host Alyssa Snesrud. "It's so fun to see everyone coming together to do so much good, and to have fun while doing it." Snesrud said she and her husband had brought their kids to several FMSC MobilePack events in the Twin Cities when they lived there, so she...
Li’l Lumberjacks and Kids Corner are open for business at our new Pine Tree Plaza location. Thanks to much assistance from the Cloquet football team and National Honor Society, the physical moving of both programs began Sept. 1. The Li’l Lumberjacks Learning Center opened on Sept. 6, followed by Kids Corner on Sept. 7. We have received countless positive comments from our families on how beautiful and large this new space is. There is still work to be done, but we are off to a great start! This project came to fruition with the help of sev...
Jeremy Gardner plays the piano in the "Ivory Garden" outside Wood City Nutrition on Avenue C in the West End of Cloquet last week during a break from work. Gardner's wife, artist and photographer Krista Leigh Gardner, decorated the piano and surrounding planters as part of the West End Flourish grant program last summer. Anyone is welcome to come and play the piano while the weather remains warm enough to keep it outside....
When it comes to children, it can often be difficult to explain life's complicated issues or work through complex feelings. Cloquet class of 1982 alumnus Colleen Gilchrist Collins recognized firsthand the importance of having these conversations. Upon retiring in 2020, she rediscovered an interest in creative writing and started work on a children's book to promote open conversations with children about their feelings, emotions and needs. Gilchrist Collins enjoyed courses in English and writing...
There were more smiles than tears Wednesday morning at Cloquet's Washington Elementary School, as students arrived for the first day of school. The atmosphere was almost celebratory among some families. Moms Carina McKenna and Kelly Bischoff staged a photo shoot for their boys, heading into grades 1, 3 and 4 in the new school year. "They're super excited," said Bischoff. Washington principal Robbi Mondati said the feeling was mutual. "The day has been going great," she said around lunchtime...
Trail runners and walkers, plus a few leashed dogs, gathered at Pine Valley early Saturday, Aug. 27 for the sixth annual Lost Forester Trail Run. Amber Kantonen, of Cloquet, captured the women's title and finished third overall in a time of 29:47. Before the race started, Bronk...

He then started his own firm, the Marvin E. Ketola Law Office, and also worked as a public defender for the Sixth Judicial District for five years. He was e...
Warren Hietala came full circle last month while working in the blacksmith's shop at the Carlton County fair. It was there that the Cloquet High School junior once escaped as a youngster while his parents were working in the art building. He'd become immersed watching blacksmith Steve Davis and others crafting red hot metal into tools and trinkets. "My parents would never let me touch the pictures, because they were worried I would break them or something, so I would come in here and watch...
Sometimes it helps to just talk about things and that’s what a Duluth-based nonprofit hopes will happen at its free Cloquet Area Inclusion Learning Cohort. Amber Lewis, Welcoming Community Program coordinator for Northspan Group Inc., said they want to bring people together for a series of seven workshops based around the idea of creating a more inclusive community. “We have people from a bunch of different backgrounds, generations, lived experiences, and sometimes that creates conflict, or sometimes people don’t feel like they belong,” Lewis s...

American buffalo have roamed Don and Marlene Solwold's farm near Esko for 48 years. Marlene died of Alzheimer's 10 years ago, but Don, 89, still has a small buffalo herd and enjoys spending time with them, spraying them with nontoxic fly spray, brushing their dark furry coats and talking to them. The Solwold family was named the Carlton County Farm Family of the Year and was presented with the award at the Carlton County Fair on Aug. 19. The Farm Family recognition program, which has honored Min...
“In our own contemporary context of the rat race of anxiety, the celebration of Sabbath is an act of both resistance and alternative. It is resistance because it is a visible insistence that our lives are not defined by the production and consumption of commodity goods.” ~Walter Brueggemann Sabbath as Resistance: Saying No in Culture of Now In the past couple of weeks, I became aware of the concept termed “quiet quitting.” For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, quiet quitting is a mindset...
In 1918, Charles and Martha Wilhelmena Anderson bought an 80-acre farm southeast of Cromwell from a private owner, not knowing they were starting a legacy. More than 100 years later, their great-grandson still owns the farm and is the fourth generation of the family to do so. The current owners, Guy and LeeAnn Anderson of the Swede Lake Farm, were presented with a Century Farm sign at the Carlton County Fair on Friday, Aug. 19. The previous family to own the farm when Charles and Martha were...
Shirley Magnuson, 83, has been selected as the female Outstanding Senior Citizen for Carlton County this year. She will be honored during a ceremony at noon at the Carlton County fair Friday, Aug. 19 in the Hartman Pavilion. Shirley told of those cold days standing outside storefronts, faithfully ringing the bell for the Salvation Army's Red Kettle during the Christmas season. "It would sometimes get down to 20 below," she said. "But I was prepared, I wore four layers of clothes." Magnuson's...
