Lydia Swedberg is a hard-working professional photographer who specializes in couples photos and grads. She is also 15 years old and a sophomore at Esko High School. Balancing school and work can be challenging - especially without a driver's license - but it's a labor of love. And love is what makes Swedberg's photography world go around. She tells a story of a proposal she photographed near Pier B in Duluth last Saturday. The young man who was going to propose texted her for weeks in advance....
On the first day of 2017, Glenn and I settled into our new community and new marriage, hopeful that we would find good friends and a satisfying way of living at Oldenburg House. We really didn't know that this region was so full of creative, generous, engaged people and organizations. But it didn't take very long for us to realize it. From the Free Range Film Festival to Oshkii Giizhik Singers to County Seat Theater to Agate Music Series to Heart Berry Contemporary Ojibwe Design to Dragon Fire...
Golden-winged warbler. Rusty patched bumble bee. Steelhead and brook trout. Healthy soil. Clean drinking water. These are just a few species and resources that most of us Northlanders deeply value. We are incredibly lucky to live in a region that has a rich history of natural heritage with pristine lakes, woods, and streams. But, as the saying goes, “It takes a village” or community to protect and enhance our natural resources. Your local Carlton Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) can...
The City of Cloquet, in collaboration with Oldenburg Arts and Cultural Community, were selected as one of four communities selected in the state (out of 41 applications) for Minnesota’s Artists on Mainstreet Program. I want to thank all of the regional artists and other creative people who joined our West End Flourish virtual workshop April 29, hosted by Rethos, Springboard for the Arts, Oldenburg Arts and Cultural Community, the City of Cloquet, and funded in part by the Bush Foundation. It was...
Michele Anderson / Springboard for the Arts At Springboard for the Arts, our work is about supporting creative people power in communities of all sizes. For us, that means holding that artists are essential. Our work supports artists making a living and a life, helps artists offer their creative thinking to community planning processes, ensures communities have hubs and homes for creatives to gather and support one another, and creates mechanisms for artists to demonstrate, experiment, and prototype new possibilities for their community. We...

Gail Olson / Carlton County Farmers Market Next time you’re at the Carlton County Farmers Market, walk down an aisle and look at the names on the booths. Each of those names can tell you a lot about the food you’re buying and the neighbor who grew or made it. Some farms, like Heavenly Acres and Promised Land Farm, are named with deep love for a specific place and life-long ideals about how to care for land, animals and people. Others honor farmers who came before them. Leaning Barn Farm tak...
I’m not usually fan of knick-knacks and I like to keep the mantle over my fireplace pretty clean but there is one statue that I allow to keep a permanent perch: “The Jonake” by Edward Knudsen. The two-inch-high wire and clay figure depicts a farmer in overalls and plaid shirt holding a sign for the Free Range Film Festival. Underneath the inscription reads: “Every year, in a big old barn, Jonake Fisher-Merritt holds a film festival. He shows dozens of local independent films over a few days at t...

Esko High School senior Michael Urie has been accepted to attend the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland after receiving a nomination from U.S. Rep. Pete Stauber, who represents the 8th Congressional District in Minnesota. Urie said he was drawn to the military academy because "many members of my family have served, and I'd like to follow in their footsteps." Teens interested in attending U.S. service academies are encouraged to seek nominations from members of Congress. Stauber said Urie...
When the pandemic suddenly made Minneapolis substitute school teacher Sam Kavanaugh jobless, the Carlton High School alumnus turned it into an opportunity. He went full "Olympic mode" with his training for the Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions, set to air May 17-28. A total of 15 competitors, including Kavanaugh, face off for a $250,000 grand prize. Kavanaugh, who won a total of $156,202 on the popular quiz show in 2019, already had a pretty good idea of what it takes to win and it's more than...

Three-year-old Ellie Hatfield isn't quite sure what to make of the rooster she got to hold during Saturday's Chicken Swap in Carlton. Hatfield's dad, Caleb, said they have ducks at home and now Ellie wants to add pigs and maybe even chickens to the mix. Dad isn't so sure. The rooster's owner, Bonnie Warner of Silver Bay, said she comes to the Chicken Swap in Carlton every year. She sold about half her eggs and half her ISA Brown birds Saturday, and shared a lot of advice with interested...

Seeing how people are struggling and yet winning battles with Covid-19 reminds me of my friend Dave Boyer - a man with great inner strength and character - and so does my wedding anniversary this month, as Boyer was my best man. One of his goals was to live to 2000 and celebrate the new century. He died in 1999 at age 46 from complications of kidney disease. Growing up, Boyer was one of the best athletes in Cloquet in his age group. I recall seeing his many Punt, Pass, and Kick trophies,...
Ellie Swanson's photojournalism class at Wrenshall High School, where the yearbook is produced, has students collaborating on a spread called "Face It." The class borrowed a backdrop and asked the district to purchase two umbrella lights. "Thus, our small studio was built," Swanson said. "We have never had access to lights and a backdrop before, but with some help from YouTube, my students were soon capturing great portraits in our little studio." Pictured here are some of the faces the...
Cloquet eighth-grader Alex Johnson rolls up a ramp at the Cloquet skatepark Tuesday, attempting an ollie jump. The skate park was bustling with teens Tuesday, skating or just hanging out at the Athletic Park facility on the sunny afternoon....
The week before spring break, students at Cloquet Middle School spent time learning about further education and careers. Activities included interest assessments, career exploration, dress-up days and learning about what their options are following high school. The students were excited as they created their own campus with their homerooms - featuring both real and imaginary schools - to compete for a pizza party....
The parable of the sower has always been one of my favorites. Found in Matthew 13 and Luke 8, it should come as no surprise that a farm boy from Iowa would relate to the imagery of planting. As I write this, planting is almost ready to start down in Iowa and many farmers will soon be running full-out trying to get the crop into the ground. The speed and size of their efforts have increased dramatically. Corn planters are much more amazing machines than most people would assume. They have to...
Community service was drilled into many of us growing up. This was necessary in rural communities of the past that had little money to spare. People gave time and energy to provide community centers, local celebrations, 4-H groups, local theater, food drives, cemetery care and more to enrich our rural lives. As a volunteer myself - township officer, reporter, western Carlton County promoter, and donor - without any fanfare to many good projects, I see this tradition continue. Read the local...
