As a young child, Cloquet's Koby Bender had two goals: play college hockey and in the National Hockey League. The 22-year-old is on his way. In his third year with the University of Minnesota Duluth, Bender is playing college hockey at the highest level for one of the best teams in the country. The Bulldogs have won the national championship the past two years and Bender contributed both years, making nine appearances in the 2017-18 season (he also qualified for the NCHC Academic All-Conference... Bearaboo Coffee opened New Year's Day with brand new owners, after Natalie and Chris Swanson purchased Cloquet's only combination coffee shop and car wash from Karen Williams, who owned both businesses with her late husband, Bob. It was a family-centered business for Karen and Bob, and the Swansons plan to continue that tradition. Their two high-school-aged kids - senior Caleb and junior Emma - are already trained in as baristas, while eighth grader Grace is nearly trained in. Their fifth... Full story

Santa's helpers were busy in Cloquet Wednesday, serving Christmas dinner to hundreds of community members who either came to Zion Lutheran Church to enjoy the communal Christmas dinner or enjoyed ham, meatballs, potatoes and gravy, vegetables, rolls and more delivered straight to their doors. Because they had such a great volunteer turnout this year, anyone who came was served a sit-down meal after they helped themselves to various appetizers, said Vivi Johnson. The Johnson family is a driving... Full story
Larry Penk, George Saarela and Dick Singpiel from the Carlton Lions Club complete a vision test for a Carlton student. The Lions use a vision screener that evaluates nine different areas of vision. The Carlton Area Lions Club has provided this screening to preschool-first grade students in the Carlton, Esko and Wrenshall schools. The screening device is funded through the Lions International. Their goal is to provide this screening to all schools within Carlton County. "Thank you to the Carlton...
Meggan Ranta of Northwoods Credit Union and Larissa Sheff, a registered nurse at Community Memorial Hospital, show off 12 handmade baby blankets for newborns at the hospital's birthing suites. Employees at the credit union spent their noon hours and time outside of work to make the quilts as part of CUForward Day in October. They also paid for all materials used in the blankets. Have you ever had the opportunity to meet your childhood or, for that matter, adulthood hero? It could be a political or religious leader, a rock or TV or movie star, a sports legend, or maybe even an astronaut. Someone, if you were to meet face-to-face, you would be so awestruck by that observers would have to tell you to please close your mouth? What makes a person a hero? Of course, people generally honor their parents and other family members, local clergy and elected officials, and even... Full story

Even in a year that included a flooded apartment and moving into a new building, Cloquet's Paula Maki is still doing all she can to fulfill her mission of bringing Christmas gifts and joy to residents of nursing homes, assisted living facilities and adult foster homes in Carlton County and beyond. For that, she has both a nonprofit organization and an alias, with the same name: Ms. Christmas. Now living at Larson Commons, Maki held a Christmas party Monday for the assisted care residents,...

News that St. Cloud State University is ending its football program has left at least one Cloquet graduate scrambling over finals week to find a way to keep playing college football. Dylan Lauer, a 2018 Cloquet grad, heard whispers Monday night and Tuesday morning, but dismissed them as rumors until Tuesday afternoon when the news was everywhere. By the team’s 3 p.m. Tuesday meeting with the president, he already knew what was coming. The university said it will eliminate football as well as b...
While the Salvation Army's Red Kettle fundraiser runs only through the weeks leading up to Christmas, the proceeds pay for local social services programs for the entire year, according to David Westerberg, Salvation Army case manager. That's why it's vitally important they get enough volunteers to staff the kettles, which are located at the Super One, L&M and Walmart stores in Cloquet. "A manned kettle with a bell ringer usually averages about $30 or $40 an hour, versus an unmanned kettle,... Full story
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz visited the Sappi mill in Cloquet last month for conversation and a tour. Interim Sappi mill manager Tom Radovich said mill leadership wanted to talk to Gov. Walz about forest products in general, which have faced many challenges in recent years. "There have been lots of mill closures [due to declining demand] and we wanted him to know what we are planning long term and what the state can do to help us as one of the largest manufacturing sites in Minnesota," Radovich... Some memories never fade. Don Long remembers the morning of Dec. 7, 1941 like it was yesterday. The Barnum High School 1939 grad had been at Kaneohe Bay Naval Air Station in Hawaii for about only two weeks when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, an act of aggression that catapulted the United States into World War II. "I was a Seaman Second Class, the lowest animal in the Navy," Long said in a phone interview from his home in Napa, California this week. "I'd been to boot camp and radio school,... Full story
Shoppers for Christmas trees can experience a Swedish Christmas in Minnesota at the Jansson Tree Farm of Gunilla and Goran Jansson north of Mahtowa just off of Highway 61 at the end of Carlson Road. The tree farm wopens today and will run for eight days, through Saturday, Dec. 7. "People can walk over or drive over to the tree area," Gunilla said. "They can feel and smell the trees before they find the one that will be just right for them. People will be able to cut their own trees or we can...
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is one of the largest volunteer networks in the nation for those 55 and over. One of the great things about this program is that one can use skills and interests developed over a lifetime for the benefit of the community. This month’s featured volunteer, Bonnie Wenborg, is doing just that. From among her many skills, Wenborg is using her bookkeeping skills to assist the Tri-Community Food Shelf in Cromwell. When Wenborg heard about the need, she says she figured she had the necessary skills, so why n...
Most people want to leave a legacy, to know that their lives mattered, to leave their mark on the world, a contribution of some sort to future generations. But many don’t consciously think about what they want their legacy to be or how to build it. They also don’t realize that they aren’t alone, that they can involve others in creating their legacy. Warren Tester has done that. Tester is being honored as Carlton County’s 2019 Outstanding Conservationist for his work on what he calls his “strategic” property in the Nemadji watershed.... More than 100 years ago, a member of the Fond du Lac band pitched six innings for the Chicago White Sox … the same year he was deemed “unqualified” to play for the Cloquet baseball team. His name was William Cadreau. The right-handed pitcher is listed in the 1889 Census Roll of the Fond du Lac Band of Chippewa, a 1-year old boy born to Antoine Cadreau and Louisa Naganab on Sept. 2, 1888, in Cloquet. William’s lineage appears to show he is the grandson of Chief Naganab of Fond du Lac, who sig... Full story

Kiana Bender, Dea DeLeon and Taylor Nelson may attend different local high schools, but the trio have at least two things in common. The first is that all three play hockey for the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Lumberjack girls hockey team. The second is the fact that all three signed National Letters of Intent this past week to play sports in college. Bender and DeLeon will play softball at UMD and Nelson will play Division I hockey at Bemidji State. "I wanted to stay close to home and UMD was also the...
In my 17 years of living, I’ve had a hard time finding anything that interests me for very long. School, boring. Reading, boring. Waterparks, boring. Shopping, boring. Hikes, boring. Watching movies, boring. Someone shooting an off-balance, 25-foot shot before it splashes into the net or sprinting 20 miles an hour, jumping up and extending their body to catch a ball by their fingertips as they come crashing to the ground, somehow managing to hang onto the ball — now, that’s something I can get into. Sports has always fascinated me. Ever since...
Wrenshall coach Jeremy Zywicki was recently named coach of the year for the 9 Man North White district of the Minnesota State High School Football League for his work this year with the new Carlton/Wrenshall Raptors. This honor prompted me to check in with Coach Zywicki and co-coach Jason Crane. The two led the team to an 8-0 record in the regular season. According to Zywicki, the accomplishment is due in large part to the positive, hard-working students who made the dream of this season a... Full story
