  • Students thrive in alternative sports program

    Joe Bowen|Jan 24, 2025

JR Bents and Gentry Olson took a moment to reminisce during a break in the action at a basketball exhibition between Cloquet's "unified" gym class and their counterparts from a similar team in Bemidji. Bents, a ninth-grader at Cloquet High School, joined the class last school year. "I didn't really know anybody, and I met Gentry," he said. "We're really good friends right now." Olson, a seventh-grader at Cloquet Middle School, leaned back pensively. "Eh," he joked, fluttering his hand in a...

    Kerry Rodd|Jan 24, 2025

The first half of last Friday's boys basketball matchup between Esko and Barnum was tight with Esko managing to stake themselves to a seven- point lead. Then Esko came out and got on an offensive roll in the second half and eventually pulled away to an 83-63 Polar League win in Barnum. "They are a typical Barnum team," said Esko coach Derek Anderson. "They are strong, patient, physical and always well-coached and in general they are always a quality opponent." The Bombers stayed close with Esko...

  • Esko is stingy at home vs. Barnum

    Kerry Rodd|Jan 24, 2025

Strong and balanced scoring helped propel the Esko girls basketball team to an impressive 66-27 home win over the Barnum Bombers on Thursday night. "We were able to control the tempo," said Esko coach Sue Northey. Esko relied on speed and quickness as they rolled to the win. Clara Swanson led Esko with 18 points and was a tough matchup for the Bombers. "Esko plays at a fast pace and that's how they've done it for a long time," said Barnum coach Mariah Minkkinen, who missed the game due to...

  • 'Jacks alpine skiers ramp up for repeat run at State

    Jana Peterson|Jan 24, 2025

For the second year in a row, winter weather has been a challenge for the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton alpine ski teams, with Monday's meet at Mont du Lac cancelled due to frigid temperatures. Head coach Ryan Zimny wasn't fazed by the change. "The lack of natural snow has been annoying, but at least it has been cold enough to make snow, so much better than last year," he said, referring to conditions at Spirit Mountain in Duluth, where the boys and girls teams practice. Zimny said the girls team is...

    Dwight Cadwell|Jan 17, 2025

Coming off a tough loss last Friday night to Barnum, the Cromwell-Wright boys basketball team picked up its seventh win of the season Tuesday, defeating the Carlton/Wrenshall Raptors 80-48 in Carlton. Carlton/Wrenshall was fresh off its first win of the season, also last Friday, over the Floodwood Polar Bears. "This was a big bounce back win over the Raptors," said head coach Bill Pocernich. "We had a tough loss last game with Barnum, and it was nice just to come out and play well." The...

    Kerry Rodd|Jan 17, 2025

The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey team was hungry for a win as they took the ice for Hockey Day Cloquet Saturday. The Lumberjacks had not had a win since Dec. 5 against Hibbing/Chisholm. Saturday night the young CEC squad snapped a 10-game losing streak with an impressive 2-0 win over the Northern Tier Stars, a Class AA cooperative of St. Francis, North Branch and Cambridge-Isanti. "That was a huge win for us," said CEC coach Kennedy Weets. "The girls were smiling all day long in anticipatio...

  • No puck luck for Lumberjacks

    Kerry Rodd|Jan 17, 2025

Organizers for Hockey Day Cloquet couldn't have asked for a more picturesque setting than what everyone saw Saturday. A fluffy white snow fell all day long, the smell of cookies, popcorn and burgers emanated from food vendor stands, and an energetic crowd surrounded the hockey rink at Veterans Park. Unfortunately, the CEC boys hockey team struggled to put pucks past the Sartell goalie as the Lumberjacks fell in overtime 2-1 in the second game of a varsity and junior varsity quadrupleheader,...

  • Skiers make most of sparse snow

    Brady Slater|Jan 10, 2025

Now in her second year volunteering for her alma mater Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Nordic ski program, Jazlyn Gunderson reported for practice Jan. 3 to a unique location. Roughly three dozen team members and supporters appeared in frigid temperatures on a 400-yard field at the Cloquet Forestry Center. First-year head coach Phil Rogers had groomed the field and even set a circuitous classic track around the edges, where grassy spots lurked nearby. Nobody can remember the team ever practicing in that...

  • Wrestling program sees rise in numbers, wins

    Kerry Rodd|Jan 10, 2025

Things are starting to ramp up for the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton wrestling team. The Lumberjacks have already wrestled in three tournaments this season, including Lakeville North, Brainerd and the Jack Hammer Tournament in Pequot Lakes. "We've also wrestled in a triangular against both Crosby-Ironton and Ogilvie," said longtime CEC coach Al Denman. "We beat C-I and lost to Ogilvie by just a few points, and a year ago Ogilvie throttled us. We've come a long way, and our numbers are up." The 'Jacks...

  • Lumberjacks press Bombers for win

    Kerry Rodd|Jan 10, 2025

For the first half of last Thursday's boys basketball game, the game between Cloquet and the home team Barnum was close. The Lumberjacks held a slim five-point lead, but the game was still up in the air. That all changed when Cloquet came out in a three-quarter-court trap that proved too much for Barnum to handle. Cloquet went on to win 90-61. "That first half we couldn't get the pace we wanted and Barnum controlled the tempo," said Cloquet coach Steve Battaglia. "We came out in a trap to start...

The midpoint review assesses progress toward goals, objectives and strategies put forth in the 10-year plan, and includes 15 performance metrics and associated targets. • High drama in Wilderness sweep

    Jan 10, 2025

Two gutsy efforts helped the Minnesota Wilderness complete a home sweep of the Anchorage Wolverines in the first 2025 series for both teams. Two second period goals Friday helped push Minnesota (16-13-3) over the top for a 3-2 victory. On Saturday, Jakeb Lynch, with 19 seconds left in overtime, lifted the Wilderness to a 6-5 win. Through the weekend, the Wilderness trailed for only 19 seconds, despite Anchorage (20-8-3) finishing with more shots on goal in both games. The sweep extends the Wilderness’ season-long winning streak to seven g...

Perich was the co-leader in the nation with six interceptions and he became the leader of the defensive backfield for Minnesota. "It is always a good tournament and we love coming to play here," said Cromwell-Wright coach Bill Pocernich. "There's always good competition against good teams." The host Lumberjacks took on Pocernich's Cardinals in the opening game for both teams. Cloquet came out on top 82-48. "We started well...

  • Girls tourney is competitive

    Kerry Rodd|Jan 3, 2025

The Wood City Classic girls basketball tournament is in the books, and both local teams went 1-1 in the tournament. Cloquet opened with a win over Mesabi East and then lost to Pine City, while Cromwell-Wright started with an easy win over Pine City, but then fell to Mesabi East in their second game. A year ago, Cloquet entered the tournament with an 8-0 record and looked to be the favorite in Section 7AAA, but Mesabi East put a stop to the win streak. That loss kickstarted a downward spiral for...
